Fryers denies contract rejection
United says he has not rejected offer from club

Manchester United starlet Ezekiel Fryers has taken to Twitter to deny that he has rejected a new contract.

The 19-year-old defender is the latest United prospect linked with a move away from the club.

Fryers was reported to have snubbed a contract offer from United, with his current deal set to expire.

But he has now used his Twitter account to deny he has rejected an offer from United.

"Why is everyone believing what they read...I haven't rejected the contract!" he Tweeted.

Fryers is in a similar situation to that of Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison.

Indeed Morrison has now left the club, but Pogba like Fryers is out of contract and has yet to agree terms.

Former Manchester United defender Zeki Fryers has agreed a two-year contract with Standard Liege, after the Belgian club swooped following complications over a move to Premier League side Tottenham.

The England Under-19 left-back departed Old Trafford at the end of last season after failing to agree a new contract and looked set to join Spurs after agreeing terms with the club as Goal.com exclusively revealed.

However, the move was complicated by the fact that a fee would have to be set by a tribunal with United wanting around €7.5 million (£6m) for the defender.

Liege, who will not have to pay such a hefty price as they can sign him for a minimal compensation fee, stated on their website that after tracking Fryers for two years, signing him was an opportunity they could not afford to miss.

"We spotted Ezekiel two years ago at the Elite tournament where England and Belgium participated," assistant coach Jean-Francois de Sart told the club's official website.

"We [have] followed [him] since [then]. He was out of contract with Manchester United and it was a great opportunity we could not miss."

Fryers is the third high-profile departure of a youth player from Old Trafford in the past eight months, with Ravel Morison and Paul Pogba joining West Ham and Juventus respectively.

The 19-year-old made six appearances for the first team in total, with his last appearance for the team coming in the 3-2 defeat to Blackburn at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

Tottenham have completed the signing of former Manchester United starlet Zeki Fryers.

The 20-year-old left-back trained with Spurs in the summer after leaving Old Trafford.

A Spurs statement read: 'We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Standard Liege for the signing of Zeki Fryers.

'The young defender, capped by England at Under-16, 17 and 19 level, began his career at Manchester United before joining Standard Liege last summer. Zeki will link up with the Club's Development Squad.

He was expected to join the White Hart Lane club but United could have commanded up to £6m compensation as he was under 23.

Belgian side Standard Liege signed him instead on a two year contract and he has gone on to make seven first team appearances.

However, Tottenham are expecting to sell Gareth Bale to Real Madrid in the summer and want cover for Benoit Assou-Ekotto. Liege would sell now and a deal could be done for around £3million.


Fryers was close to joining Tottenham last year but the move collapsed

Tottenham are also the latest club to show interest in Barcelona striker David Villa. The 31-year-old has been the subject of enquiries from Arsenal also but Barca will not loan him out and will only sell for around £16m.

Meanwhile, Fenerbahce have made a move for Tottenham midfield target Younes Belhanda at Montpellier.

Boss unhappy with Fryers move



Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed his disappointment at Tottenham Hotspur's signing of his former defender Ezekiel Fryers.

The youngster was out of contract at Manchester United and looked set to join Spurs last summer but the two clubs could not agree a compensation package. Instead, the left-back ended up at Standard Liege but moved to White Hart Lane as soon as the January window opened.

The manager is urging the authorities to look into the matter as the Reds lost out on a*sizeable fee for the defender but he accepts that Spurs' actions were not*in breach of*the current rules.

"We expected that to be honest with you," he*replied to MUTV, when asked about the*Spurs deal.*"How would you put it? To me, I think it's a blatant manipulation of the rules.

"Tottenham did nothing wrong as he went to Standard Liege. They*tried*to buy him off us and we'd been looking for a certain figure. They wouldn't pay it but*asked if they*could take him down there on trial and, at that time, he was out of contract in June anyway.

"So he went down on trial and he went to Portugal with them. They then said they weren't prepared to pay the money and, all of a sudden, he signed for Standard Liege.

"We knew immediately and suspected that he would return to*Tottenham in January and that's happened. It's a [Spurs chairman] Daniel Levy deal. You know, it's his fingerprints all over it. It's the kind of thing we expected he was going to do."

Sir Alex found it hard to hide his disappointment over the matter and clearly feels the whole situation has been unfair on United, who developed the youngster at Carrington.

"There's nothing we can do about it but I think that really we should, first of all, register our discontent in it," he explained.*"I think the league should look into it.

"I think the registration should be stopped until they investigate it thoroughly. There's bound to be a trail, either mobile phones or e-mails, that could give you the full story of it.

"I must say I'm disappointed in Tottenham. For whatever reason, a club that size has decided to go down this route. I'm disappointed."
