Brian Kidd has returned to Manchester City as technical development manager at the club's academy.

His brief will be to coach both the talented youngsters coming through Platt Lane and also head up the in-service training of the staff.

Kidd, who spent seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at Manchester United, along with Paul Hart helped keep Portsmouth in the Barclays Premier League following the departure of Tony Adams last season.

City's football administration officer Brian Marwood said: 'Brian has vast experience at both club and international level.

'He will help maintain the excellent development programme we have in place at the academy," stressed Marwood.

'He was much in demand when it became clear he wasn't going to stay at Portsmouth and we are delighted that Brian has chosen to come and work with us.'

City Assistant Speaks Fondly Of The Gaffer

Brian Kidd spent 11 years wearing our shirt, after progressing through the ranks, winning two league titles, the FA Cup as well as scoring in our 1968 winning European Cup final. Sir Alex Ferguson then brought him back to the club in the 1980s to work with our youngsters, before promoting him to assistant manager in 1991.

In his autobiography, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the tensions between himself and Brian Kidd, after it looked like his assistant was trying to undermine him.

Kidd left to manage Blackburn half way through our historic 1998-1999 campaign, missing out on our fabulous Treble, and was sacked less than a year later after failing to save Blackburn from relegation from the Premiership and leaving them 19th in the division below.

Last season, Kidd was appointed Roberto Mancini’s assistant manager at City, where he had spent three years as a player during the 1970’s, but still refers to the Manchester United manager as ‘the gaffer’.

“All of the time, I speak to the gaffer,” he said with a smile. “It was fantastic, the experience and the apprenticeship he gave me. I don’t want to get into the book. But I appreciate everything he’s done for me. I can totally believe that he is still doing it at United, definitely. It’s because it is in him. The thing that drives him is that he loves it.”

Garry Cook said it wasn’t a matter of if, but when, City knocked United out of the League Cup last season in the semis. Roberto Mancini promised that he personally would take down the banner, which mocks City for the number of years they’ve gone without a trophy, when his side visited Old Trafford for the second leg. But of course, like the home and away league matches against the blues, United were triumphant.

Kidd insists that he has no problem with the banner because it’s simply stating the truth. It has been 34 years since City have won a trophy.

“The banner is fair,” he continued. “It is a fact. It is no good talking about ifs, buts and maybes. That is it. It is staring every one of us in the face. We have got to face it up and deal with it. ‘So what if they have got the banner up? They’ve got the banner up. No big deal.”

Brian Kidd memperingatkan manajer Manchester United (MU), Sir Alex Ferguson, jika Manchester City telah memasuki masa yang hebat, seperti halnya yang dilakukan Setan Merah 18 tahun lalu.

Orang nomor dua di City itu merupakan asisten Ferguson ketika MU memenangkan Liga Premier pada 1993 ketika Seten Merah mengakhiri masa 26 tahun tanpa gelar juara.

Klub Eastland itu telah menghabiskan 76 juta pound musim panas ini, di mana manajer Roberto Mancini menekankan ambisi klub untuk meraih gelar musim ini.

Kidd yakin City mampu memenangkan gelar juara dan memacu keberhasilan besar klub tersebut. Ia melihat City perlu melakuan hal yang sama dengan yang dilakukan MU 18 tahun silam. "Ini sama dengan bagaimana MU ketika kami memenangkan gelar pertama. Kami hanya membutuhkan trofi untuk memulainya," ujar Kidd pada The Sun. "Ketika kami menjuarai Piala Liga 1992, semua orang jungkir balik karena kami berhasil menjalani kualifikasi untuk bermain di tingkat Eropa. Itulah yang terjadi," tambah Kidd.

Asisten Pelatih City itu yakin semua akan berubah ketika The Citizens sukses meraih gelar juara pertamanya. Kidd yakin semua akan berkembang lebih baik setelah City sukses meraihnya karena pemain berbakat telah berkumpul di City of Manchester.

Saat ini sudah 34 tahun berlalu setelah City mampu menjuarai penghargaan besar, dan asisten pelatih berusia 61 tahun itu yakin klub Eastland itu hanya membutuhkan gelar juara pertama untuk mengawali kesuksesan.

"Ketika ini dimulai, kami membutuhkan trofi pertama di City dan sekali kami menang, mental kami akan berkembang," ungkap Kidd. "Saya percaya banyak pemain berbakat di sini. Kami memiliki skuad hebat saat ini," tegasnya.

"Telah saya katakan sebelumnya bahwa Roberto memiliki kesamaan dengan Sir Alex dan orang pikir saya sedang mengigau. Tetapi seorang manajer top memiliki cara tertentu dan telah kita lihat selama dua tahun terakhir bahwa Roberto memiliki apa yang diperlukan untuk membuat keputusan besar."
