Default Re: Jesse Lingard

Manchester United's Jesse Lingard is the 'English Andres Iniesta', believes former coach Rene Meulensteen

* Manchester United star Jesse Lingard was compared to Andres Iniesta
* The claim was made by former Red Devils coach Rene Meulensteen
* Lingard has only broken into the first team picture in recent games
* The 22-year-old earned an England call-up for the recent friendlies

He may have only just broken into the Manchester United side but Jesse Lingard is already being compared to one of world's great players - Andres Iniesta.

The bold claim was made by former Red Devils coach Rene Meulensteen, who worked under Sir Alex Ferguson at the club and had a spell in charge of Championship side Fulham back in 2013.

The Dutchman, who coached the 22-year-old during his time at Old Trafford, believes he resembles the majestic Barcelona star - who was given a standing ovation by Real Madrid fans during the El Clasico.

The attacker has been compared to Andres Iniesta, who starred for Barcelona during win over Real Madrid

He told the United review: 'I see him as the English version of Iniesta. He has still got a long way to go but that is the sort of player I see in him.'

Lingard has featured in the last five games for Louis van Gaal and scored his first goal for the club during the win over West Brom earlier in November.

The attacker also earned a call-up to the England squad for the friendlies against Spain and France but is yet to earn his first cap.

With Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial poised to return to the fold for the Champions League clash against PSV, it remains to be seen if Lingard will be handed another start.

United can secure qualification from Group B with victory at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

LINGARD TRIPPED TO ENJOY STELLAR CAREER

Jesse Lingard's performances have been an unquestionable highlight in recent weeks, with Manchester United’s latest homegrown talent earning a nomination for the club's Player of the Month award for November alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger and Chris Smalling.

The Warrington-born winger has impressed fans since his first appearance of the season at Everton in October, scoring an excellent goal against West Bromwich Albion and collecting his maiden England call-up during the recent international break.

It's still very early days for Lingard but it seems he has all of the natural qualities needed to enjoy a stellar career, having overcome the physical problems he faced in his formative years with impervious perseverance. Mike Glennie, the club's development centre coordinator and the man who scouted the youngster as a seven-year-old at Penketh United, commented to United Review: "People look for intricate things but, with Jesse, it was simple: he affected the game and he could clearly play."

Rene Meulensteen became an important part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s backroom team at Old Trafford, but he first arrived in 2001 as a renowned development coach and the Dutchman is delighted that Lingard is becoming a star at Old Trafford. "He’s bright, he’s left-footed, he’s got great ability and skill," Rene says. "I always said to him: ‘Watch as many Andres Iniesta clips as you can’, because I see Jesse as the English version of Iniesta. He has a long way to go, but that is the sort of player I see in him.

"People say he’s small because of the perception of how the Premier League is. Look at players like Andreas Iniesta, Xavi, Lionel Messi, David Silva, Juan Mata… they’re all tiny, but it doesn’t make a difference if you have a quick brain, quick feet and a big heart, and Jesse has all of those."

The 22-year-old's physical shortcomings were apparent as he rose through the ranks at United. Jesse was a Lilliputian in a world of Gullivers and he often played with the younger age group to ensure his education was only minimally disrupted. But as Under-18s coach Paul McGuinness recently attested, his former student’s talent has shone through.

“There comes a time when you know a player’s not going to be a giant, and Jesse had to adjust to being in with bigger and stronger lads,” McGuinness explains. “He was always capable of doing that because he was very brave and always brave in wanting to take the ball.”

Meulensteen is clearly enjoying seeing his former pupil fulfill his enormous potential, adding: "Everything you see in Jesse when he takes a player on - the confidence, the tricks and flicks - it all looks natural and that's because we instilled it in him at a young age. You just need an opportunity, and that’s what he’s got now.”

LINGARD: REDS MUST RISE ABOVE CRITICISM

Jesse Lingard has been shrugging off defenders during his rise through Manchester United's ranks and will now try to do the same to the club's detractors following this week's exit from the UEFA Champions League.

The former youth-team winger has only just edged into double figures for first-team appearances with the Reds but he's already well versed in what to expect from the outside world when a loss like the 3-2 reverse in Wolfsburg is suffered.

"Playing for Manchester United comes with a lot of pressure," Lingard told Norway's Viasat Sport.

"If you're out of a competition, you're going to get critics, they're going to start saying stuff. We've got to rise above that as a team, move on and concentrate on the next game.

"We just need to stay positive. We're creating a lot of chances, we're just lacking that end product. But we're working on it and hopefully that will come in the next game."

Lingard's 12 senior outings for United so far include four consecutive Champions League starts and the young man who turns 23 next week believes the games against Wolfsburg, PSV Eindhoven and CSKA Moscow (twice) can only stand him in good stead, even if the results rendered the Reds unable to remain in the 2015/16 competition.

"Obviously we're disappointed as a whole group and we've got to move on," said Jesse. "But since playing the first Moscow game away, I've gained that bit of European experience to put under my belt and I'll look forward to taking it into next year."

"Kami hanya perlu tetap positif.

LINGARD EXPLAINS DAB GOAL CELEBRATION

Jesse Lingard brought the ‘dab’ dance craze into English football with his goal celebration at St James’ Park earlier this month and the Manchester United star has hinted he may perform it again if he scores during Friday’s Emirates FA Cup fourth-round tie against Derby County.

The dab is an import from the United States and is widely credited to a rap group from Atlanta called Migos, although it only became a viral hit in American culture when Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton began performing it every time his side scored a touchdown in the NFL.

Since then, the dance move has also been performed by a number of American sports stars including basketball legend LeBron James. Even Hillary Clinton, a potential candidate to be the next president of the United States, tried the dance out during a recent television appearance.

Lingard's former United team-mate Paul Pogba has popularised the dab in Serie A with Juventus and this is how Jesse first noticed the craze. Speaking to ManUtd.com ahead of this Friday’s trip to Pride Park, the winger explained his celebration and suggested it may reappear if he scores again.

“It’s just trending at the moment,” Jesse said. “A lot of people are doing it. I’ve seen Pogba do it and knew I had to do it. At the time, I didn’t think about it but as soon as I scored I thought I might as well do it – it’s just a dance. We’ll have to see if I score on Friday – maybe it will come out again!”

On Wednesday, Lingard posted a photo of himself performing the dab alongside United mascot Fred the Red on his personal Instagram account with the caption: “Fred the Red trying to hit that dab!”

JESSE LINGARD EXPLAINS UNITED TACTICS

Jesse Lingard believes Manchester United's attacking style in Friday's Emirates FA Cup win over Derby County thrilled the travelling army of supporters.

The Reds beat the Rams 3-1 to secure a fifth-round fixture against Shrewsbury Town later this month as Louis van Gaal's men aim to go all the way in a competition the club has not won since 2004.

The winger explained a little about the system used at the iPro Stadium where goals by Wayne Rooney, Daley Blind and Juan Mata took the visitors through.

Lingard told ManUtd.com: "It was really positive. We started on the front foot, we played with freedom and I think we excited the fans. We have to press teams in most games now, put them on the back foot and force mistakes, then we can get the second ball and start playing football.

"Wayne's goal settled our nerves but they equalised before the break so we had to come out in the second half with the confidence to keep playing our football. I read that it was our biggest away end of the season. Our fans are always great – win, lose or draw, they’re always there to support us and the lads really appreciate it."

While Lingard threatened on the right flank and set up Blind's goal, Anthony Martial was outstanding on the left and the Frenchman could prove to be a thorn in Stoke City's side in Tuesday's Barclays Premier League clash. Jesse told us: "Anthony was brilliant. I know the Derby right-back [Cyrus Christie] well from my time here and he said afterwards that Anthony got past him a few times, and he got an assist as well. But that’s the talent he’s got.

"The games are coming thick and fast now, so we have to prepare right mentally; we have to get our recovery levels as good as they can be. In terms of our mentality, we don’t look too far ahead or behind. We take each game as it comes and we know we’ll have to be at our best to beat Stoke."

LINGARD DELIGHTED TO BREAK THE DEADLOCK

Jesse Lingard was thrilled to strike Manchester United's all-important first blow against Stoke City at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The 23-year-old stooped to head home from close range following a cross from Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, before a stunning team goal finished by Anthony Martial and a tap-in from Wayne Rooney completed a comfortable victory for the Reds.

Speaking to MUTV after the match, Lingard was, like his manager, quick to emphasise the significance of an early goal. "It’s massive. It settles down the fans, the manager and ourselves.

"We started very brightly, and as soon as we got the first goal, we were confident of getting a second and third. We needed to score goals, attack and entertain the crowd really. When we do that, we make the game easy for ourselves, so I think we should carry that on now.”

The winger also had praise for his fellow scorers, telling MUTV: "If we keep feeding the ball to Antony Martial, he can make things happen. We knew from his goal against Liverpool what he could bring to the team, that pace, that power, and he’s got a great goal in him."

As for his captain Rooney, Lingard added: "He’s always going to score goals, and he leads the team by example. Seven goals in seven matches is a great record and hopefully now he can get eight in eight.”

Stoke was the first fixture in a busy February for United with Barclays Premier League, Europa League and Emirates FA Cup games all on the horizon, but Lingard feels confidence is running high after a largely positive opening to 2016.

“It’s an ideal start for the run that we want to go on," he said. "We need to take each game as it comes, but we’re just enjoying our football at the moment and hopefully we can get the win at Chelsea.”
