Wigan Relegated from English Premier League with 4-1 Loss vs. Arsenal



Going into the Emirates Stadium and beating an Arsenal team playing for its Champions League life was always going to be a tall task for Wigan. It turned out to be too tall, as Arsenal defeated Wigan, relegating the Latics to Championship football next season.

This gives Wigan the distinction of being the first team to win the FA Cup and be relegated in the same season, per ESPN's Paul Carr:

The crushing blow was dealt by Theo Walcott, who broke a 1-1 deadlock early in the second half after a nice cross from Santi Cazorla. The Gunners went on to tally two more goals from Lukas Podolski and Aaron Ramsey.



Wigan came into Tuesday knowing it likely needed two wins to remain in the Premier League, trailing 17th-place Sunderland by four points with a game in hand. Though a draw against Arsenal would have technically kept Wigan alive, Sunderland would have held a plus-11 goal differential, which is the tiebreaker when two teams finish with the same amount of points.

Wigan, which has played in the Premier League for eight straight seasons, always seemed to find a way to stave off relegation in the waning moments of the season.

In 2007, a win over Sheffield United on the last day of the season kept the Latics in the Premier League. In 2011, a win over Stoke City on the last day saved Wigan, which went into the day in 19th place. Last year, the team went from 19th place with six games remaining to 15th on the table after winning five of those games.

This year, however, the magic ran dry. Now, Wigan will have to stave off other clubs from poaching its manager and top players.

Manager Roberto Martinez, often a hot name in managerial searches, could finally switch sides. Quality players like James McCarthy, James McArthur, Callum McManaman and Shaun Maloney could be snatched up by top-flight teams. Wigan could quickly find itself in a full rebuilding mode.

All good things must come to an end, and Wigan was playing with fire each year, saving its best football for late in the season. In 2013, that bad habit finally caught up with the club.

Arsenal Clinch Champions League Place with 1-0 Win vs. Newcastle



At times, it was a long and rocky season for Arsenal, but the Gunners handled their business in the end, defeating Newcastle 1-0 on Sunday and assuring a spot in the Champions League next season.

Laurent Koscielny struck the vital blow early in the second half off a free kick to give the Gunners a crucial lead. After that, it was a nervy passage of play where the Gunners desperately tried to cling to three points.



The win had the added bonus of keeping hated rival Tottenham out of the Champions League again this season. The Gunners will still have to qualify for the group stages with a play-in, but their destiny is firmly in their hands, and they will have the ability to strengthen the roster before then.

Arsenal's year did not begin on a positive note. Star striker Robin van Persie refused to sign a contract extension with the club over the summer and was eventually sold to Manchester United. One of the team's top players from a year ago, Alex Song, was then sold to Barcelona.

And the team opened the season with just two wins in their first six games, drawing three and losing to London rivals Chelsea.

But while the team would struggle against top competition all season (1-5-2 against Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham) and would once again go without a trophy, Arsenal managed to earn a coveted top-four place on the table by going unbeaten in their last 10 games, winning eight of those contests.

Theo Walcott's contract dispute was a major storyline at the beginning of the season, but he eventually signed an extension and made himself one of the Premier League's most dangerous weapons this year (21 goals and 14 assists in all competitions).

Santi Cazorla proved to be one of the top signings in Europe this summer (12 goals and 13 assists). Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski didn't exactly replace van Persie, but the duo did combine to score 28 goals. Jack Wilshere returned from injury and played well, while Mikel Arteta was a rock in the midfield.

Even the defense was solid, overcoming injuries and turnover at the keeper position, allowing just 37 goals on the season, second-fewest in the Premier League behind Manchester City (31).

While a top-four finish is nice, Arsenal fans will be clamoring to win trophies next season and will hope management opens up the wallet and signs several big names to bolster the squad. The team could use a clinical striker to lead the line, while a holding midfielder, right-back and even an upgrade at keeper should be on the shopping list as well.

Arsenal will be playing for the Champions League again next season. Now, Gooners will be hoping the team can play for a trophy in the 2013-14 campaign as well.

Juara Premier League, Manchester United Raih Rp899 Miliar



Manchester United meraup pendapatan hingga £60,8 juta (setara Rp899 miliar) dari keberhasilan menjuarai Premier League musim 2012/2013. Posisi 2 pendapatan terbanyak ditempati Manchester City dengan £58,1 juta (setara Rp859 miliar).

Hal tersebut diungkapkan situs resmi Premier League. Total uang yang diterima MU termasuk hak hadiah bagi rata, uang siaran di televisi lokal, uang siaran di televisi internasional dan posisi akhir di klasemen Premier League.
Sebagai pemuncak klasemen di akhir musim, MU mendapat hadiah £15,1 juta. Ditambah uang siaran di televisi lokal £12,9 juta, hak bagi rata £13,8 juta dan uang siaran internasional £18,9 juta, maka musim ini The Red Devils mengantongi £60,8 juta (setara Rp899 miliar).

Posisi 2 ditempati City yang meraup £58,1 juta (setara Rp859 miliar). Arsenal yang hanya finis di posisi 4 musim ini, sukses mengalahkan Chelsea dalam hal pendapatan hadiah. The Gunners mendapat £57,1 juta (setara Rp844 miliar), disusul Chelsea dengan £54,9 juta (setara Rp811 miliar).
Tottenham Hotspur yang finis di posisi 5 mendapatkan £55,8 juta. Disusul Liverpool yang berada di posisi 7 dengan £54,8 juta.
Dengan masuknya BT Sport sebagai pemegang hak siar Premier League mulai musim 2013/2014, maka pendapatan klub dari siaran televisi akan meningkat lagi. Daily Mail menyakini klub-klub medioker seperti Norwich City, Southampton, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion dan Fulham, bisa mengantongi £60,8 juta, musim depan.

Juara Premier League musim depan kemungkinan besar akan meraup hadiah hingga £100 juta (setara Rp1,4 triliun).
