Cole has demanded £120,000 - however the Stamford Bridge side aren't prepared to dish-out over £100k for the midfielder. The development leaves the door wide open for Cole, who will soon become a free agent, attracting attention from the likes of Arsenal, Man City, Tottenham, Liverpool, and of course - United.

Talks haven't got under-way with any club as yet, but an approach from Old Trafford is likely before or during the World Cup in South Africa - where Cole hopes he will be. Meanwhile, another rumoured target - Tottenham's Luka Modric has closed the door on a possible exit, instead signing a six-year deal at White Hart Lane...

WAYNE Rooney could prove key to United's hopes of landing Joe Cole this summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping the pair's potential strike partnership at the World Cup could tip the balance in United's favour as a host of clubs queue up for his signature.

Cole played just off Rooney in the second half of England's final warm up before South Africa against Japan – in what looked a lot like Fabio Capello's first choice XI for the tournament.

And should those two prove a success at the World Cup it could convince Cole that his future lies at Old Trafford, rather than Arsenal, Tottenham or Juventus, who are all chasing him.

Ferguson has tracked the Chelsea man ever since negotiations over a new deal at Stamford Bridge hit complications.

The Premier League champions are unwilling to make him one of their highest paid players, in the same bracket as John Terry and Frank Lampard.

It now looks certain that he will move on as a free agent after helping Chelsea wrest the title from United last season.

Ferguson is desperate to make him part of his rebuilding plans as he bids to return United to Premier League dominance.

He is particularly attractive to the United manager because he would not affect his summer transfer budget, being available for free.

Ferguson is hoping to bring in a top class forward, with Luiz Suarez and Karim Benzema at the top of his wanted list, as well as a long-term successor to Edwin van der Sar following the sale of Ben Foster to Birmingham.

Cole's versatility makes him an obvious United target, able to play off the front man, wide or in central midfield.

The biggest threat to Ferguson's hopes of landing him appears to come from Arsenal and Tottenham, who would offer the Londoner the chance to stay in the capital, rather than have to move up north.

But he may question whether Arsene Wenger or Harry Redknapp could match his ambitions having won three titles, three FA Cups and two League Cups at Chelsea.

Only United can match that sort of dominance and Cole would be sure of a prominent role at Old Trafford, having been a peripheral figure under Carlo Ancelotti.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to beat Manchester City in race for Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole

England and Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole is ready to turn down Manchester City and make a dramatic switch to Arsenal after the World Cup.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is anxious to strengthen his team, now that Cesc Fabregas, on duty with Spain in South Africa, is expected to leave for Barcelona at the end of the summer.

Cole would not be a direct replacement but the signing of the England man would go some way to soothing the frustration of Arsenal fans, whose team have not won a major trophy since 2005.

While City are also said to be keen on Cole, the stumbling block for both clubs has been Cole's pay demand of about £100,000 a week.

Cole's negotiations with Chelsea are understood to have broken down, which would make the 28-yearold a free agent when his contract runs out this summer.

Cole's view is that because he can sign for a new club without them having to pay the £10million he could command on the open market, he is entitled to request a lucrative financial deal.

But a source close to one of the negotiating clubs said: 'He's a good player but there are wage structures in place which will prevent clubs giving him what he wants. Maybe he will have to be more realistic.'

The player and his family are keen to stay in London. But Arsenal would not break their pay structure for Cole, with Robin van Persie and Fabregas currently the top earners on about £90,000 a week.

While Cole missed most of the season with injury - and just squeezed into Fabio Capello's final squad of 23 for South Africa - he is now on the verge of making the starting line-up against the United States next Saturday.

Wenger, with about £30m to spend plus whatever comes in from Fabregas, is likely to pursue Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, ending Manuel Almunia's career as Arsenal No 1.
