Barcelona dan PSG Lengkapi Klub Unggulan Liga Champions Musim Depan
Doni Wahyudi - detikSport

Champions League qualifying round-up: Monaco joined by Dinamo Zagreb, APOEL Nicosia and Rapid Vienna in play-off round

* Monaco thrashed Young Boys to reach the Champions League play-offs
* APOEL Nicosia made it through on away goals against Midtjylland
* Rapid Vienna stunned Ajax by sealing 5-2 aggregate victory in Amsterdam
* Dinamo Zagreb drew 3-3 at Molde to get to next round on away goals rule
* Manchester United will not be able to face Sporting Lisbon in play-offs

Four-times European champions Ajax were knocked out of the Champions League in a night of third qualifying round ties on Tuesday after a dramatic 3-2 defeat at home by unsung Rapid Vienna.

Ajax, with a 2-2 draw in the bag from the first leg in Vienna, trailed 2-0 at half-time, then hit back to equalise only for Rapid to score again almost immediately to complete a 5-4 aggregate win.

Monaco, who beat Young Boys 7-1 on aggregate, Dinamo Zagreb and APOEL Nicosia also progressed to the play-off round after Tuesday's second-leg ties.

Robert Beric headed in from Stefan Stangl's cross to put Rapid ahead in the 12th minute after Ajax lost possession outside the area and Louis Schaub increased their lead six minutes before half-time.

Ajax, fielding a starting line-up with an average age of under 21, pulled one back when Arkadiusz Milik volleyed home seven minutes into the second half.

Nemanja Gudelj equalised with a controversial goal in the 75th minute, firing home from the edge of the area as Rapid complained that goalkeeper Jan Novota had been fouled in the build-up.

But their protests turned to celebrations two minutes later when 20-year-old Schaub burst forward, held off three defenders and sent his shot into the top corner to stun the Amsterdam ArenA.

Monaco, quarter-finalists last season, produced a second-half blitz as Ivan Cavaleiro, Layvin Kurzawa, Anthony Martial and Stephan El Shaarawy scored in a 23-minute spell.

Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb progressed on away goals despite squandering a three-goal lead at Molde.

Marko Pjaca, Arijen Ademi and Marko Rog scored in a devastating five-minute spell midway through the first half.

Etzaz Hussain and Mohamed Elyounoussi scored either side of halftime for the Norwegians, who then had Vegard Forren sent off before Ola Kamara levelled to set up a dramatic finale.

The Croatians survived to go through on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate draw.

Apoel, the only Cypriot team to have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, which they achieved in 2012, also went through on away goals despite losing 1-0 at home to FC Midtjylland.

Erik Sviatchenko scored in the second minute for the Danes who were eliminated following a 2-2 draw on aggregate.

Serba-serbi Drawing Fase Grup Liga Champions
Doni Wahyudi - detikSport

Klub Kontestan Liga Champions 2015/2016

Pot 1: Barcelona, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Benfica, Paris Saint-Germain, Zenit Saint Petersburg, PSV Eindhoven
Pot 2: Real Madrid, Atle;tico Madrid, Porto, Arsenal, Manchester United, Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen, Manchester City
Pot 3: Shakhtar Donetsk, Sevilla, Lyon, Dynamo Kyiv, Olympiacos, CSKA Moscow, Galatasaray, Roma
Pot 4: BATE Borisov, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Wolfsburg, Dinamo Zagreb, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Gent, Malmo, Astana

UEFA Champions League draw: Manchester United face PSV Eindhoven, CSKA Moscow and Wolfsburg as Manchester City take on Juventus and Arsenal meet Bayern Munich

* Arsenal will face Bayern Munich, Olympiacos and Dinamo Zagreb
* Chelsea drawn against Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Maccabi Tel-Aviv
* Manchester City meet Juventus, Sevilla and Borussia Monchengladbach
* Manchester United making return to Champions League after a year ou
t

The curse of the Champions League hit Manchester City again on Thursday with the Premier League leaders handed the toughest draw of English clubs.

City, who have never gone past the last 16, will have their work cut to do so this season from a group containing last season's runners up Juventus, Europa League winners Sevilla and solid German side Borussia Monchengladbach.

Manuel Pellegrini's expensively-assembled side are the stand-out performers at the start of the Premier League season, however, and there will be great upset at the Etihad if they don't at least reach the knockout stages, where they have twice lost to Barcelona.

City's head of football administration Brian Marwood - representing the club at the draw in Monaco - said: 'It's a little bit different this time. We didn't get Barcelona and we didn't get Bayern Munich — let's hope we get them further in the competition, that means we've progressed.

'We always seem to draw very difficult groups, but it is what it is. I'm sure it could have been tougher. But clubs will be looking at us and seeing the talent we have, and you'd like to think they are not happy about drawing us.'

City have never scored more than once in their three meetings with Juventus, and will come up against transfer target Paul Pogba, providing he remains in Turin.

Manchester United reached the group stages with play-off victory over Club Bruges and will face PSV Eindhoven.

It will be an early return to the Dutch club for United summer signing Memphis Depay, who tweeted: 'Well well PSV, guess we'll see each other soon.'

Louis van Gaal's men overcame the Belgian side 7-1 on aggregate in their play-off and have aslo been rewarded with games against CSKA Moscow and Wolfsburg.

United, who are making their return to the Champions League after a season out of the competition, are undefeated in two games against CSKA and beat Wolfsburg twice when they last met in the 2009-10 group stage.

Arsenal also have a difficult group which includes old foes Bayern Munich who have dumped the Gunners out of the tournament twice in the last three seasons.

There will be a lot of attention around their games with Greek side Olympiacos, who are mired in match-fixing allegations as serious as those that saw Turkish club Fenerbahce thrown out of the tournament in 2011.

Olympiacos owner Vangelis Marinakis - on bail accused of match-fixing allegations - told the English media: 'Why don't you write about sport? All you write about is bulls**t.'

The Gunners, who were knocked out at the last 16 stage by Monaco last season, will also face Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb.

Arsenal secretary David Miles said: 'The draw started ominously when we were drawn in Bayern's group but we can be relatively pleased with how it turned out.'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will return to Porto, who he led to an unlikely Champions League title in 2004. But their Group G doesn't look too troublesome, also facing Dynamo Kiev and Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

The Premier League champions have never failed to scored in six previous meetings with Porto, although Mourinho has won neither of his two trips to his old club.

Chelsea's global ambassador Carlo Cudicini said: 'Porto are a club that does good deals in (the) transfer market. But they keep replacing them with good players and end up in the Champions League every season. It's not an easy draw at all.'

Holders Barcelona face trips to Germany, Italy and Ukraine to face Bayer Leverkusen, Roma and BATE Borisov in Group E as they look to retain the trophy they won in Berlin in June.

Barca's La Liga rivals Real Madrid take on Paris Saint-Germain, Shakhtar Donestk and Malmo in Group A as bid to win an 11th European Cup.

It is also likely that PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who began his career at Malmo, will get the chance to return to Sweden and his boyhood club.

The English quartet avoided the 6,800-mile round trip to Kazakhstan side Astana, who will play Benfica, Galatasaray and Atletico Madrid.

Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg, Valencia, Lyon, Gent make up Group H.

The 2016 Champions League final will be held at the San Siro in Milan, Italy, on May 28.

England in danger of losing a Champions League place as UEFA co-efficient continues to slide and Italy catch up

* England could lose a Champions League place if Premier League clubs continue to perform poorly in European competition
* Countries are ranked using co-efficient points based on the performance of their clubs in European competition over the last five seasons
* UEFA only reserve four Champions League spots for the top three countries - which are currently Spain, England and Germany
* Italy, however, are just 4.429 points behind England now and could elbow the Premier League out of the top three if results are similar to last year
* Juventus reached Champions League final last year while none of England's four representatives made it beyond the last-16 stage
* Italy also had five clubs in the last 16 of Europa League last year

The Premier League could soon see its Champions League quota cut from four teams down to three if English clubs continue to perform poorly in Europe.

England are in danger of falling out of UEFA's top bracket, which currently allows four teams to qualify for the Champions League through the nation’s respective domestic league.

UEFA reserve four Champions League spots for only three countries - currently Spain, Germany and England - but another bad year in Europe for Premier League clubs could lead to Italy pushing England out of that elite trio.

Manchester United advanced to the group stages of the Champions League after beating Bruges in a play-off

England's co-efficient has not been done any favours by West Ham and Southampton's failure in Europa League qualification, but Manchester United progressing to the group stages of the Champions League was a help.

The UEFA co-efficient system ranks countries according to the performance of their clubs in Europe in the past five seasons and then distributes places in European competitions accordingly.

The gap between England and Italy has been steadily closing over the last five years and, after the Champions League and Europa League play-offs, there is just 4.429 points separating them, England (65.034, Italy 60.605).

Quote:
CURRENT UEFA CO-EFFICIENT

Spain 85.142

Germany 66.749

England 65.034

Italy 60.605

(accurate after Champions League and Europa League play-off round)

A graphic designed by MailOnline following the co-efficient of England, Spain, Germany and Italy since 2010

At the end of last season, Spain had a co-efficient of 99.999 with England second on 80.391, Germany third on 79.415 and Italy fourth on 70.510.

However, points from the 2010-11 campaign do not count this season, and in that particular year England performed better than Germany and Italy.

That means that England have lost the 18.357 points they earned from that campaign while Germany have had their 15.666 points from 2010-11 deducted and Italy have seen 11.571 taken off their score.

A slight reprieve for England, though, is that Italy only have two clubs in the Champions League group stages this season (Juventus and Roma) while England have four, (Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal).

But in the Europa League, Italy are represented by three teams (Napoli, Fiorentina and Lazio) while England have just the two (Liverpool and Tottenham).

So far this season, Spain have earned 3.357 points, Germany and England have picked up 3.000 points and Italy just 1.666 points.

But Italy only had Juventus and Roma in the group stages of the Champions League last season and still picked up 5.429 more co-efficient points than England – 19.000 compared to 13.571 – helped by Juventus reaching the final in Berlin.

A large part of Italy's success in Europe last year came in the Europa League when they had five teams in the last 16. Roma were eliminated at the group stage of the Champions League but they joined Italy's four existing representatives (Inter Milan, Napoli, Torino, Fiorentina) in the Europa League.

Napoli and Fiorentina both reached the semi-finals before being eliminated by Dnipro and Sevilla respectively.

England also had four representatives in the group stages of the Champions League last season, but Liverpool failed to advance any further while Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City were all knocked out in the last 16.

Liverpool then joined Tottenham in being eliminated at the last-32 stage of the Europa League while Everton were knocked out in the last 16 by Dynamo Kiev.

It is also worth noting that next season, points gained from 2011-12 will be dropped from the co-efficient. England picked up 15.250 points in that campaign while Italy earned 11.357 points, meaning the gap will become even smaller between the two countries if Premier League clubs fail to out-perform those in Serie A this season.

With England losing their points advantage over Italy from 2010-11, they cannot afford another season like last year if they are to maintain their full quota of Champions League places. If they do, then Serie A would be on the way to receiving a fourth Champions League spot and England would be left with just three.

It would be an embarrassing situation for the Premier League and English clubs given the amount of money in the game compared to Serie A.

Missing out on the Champions League also has financial implications with last season's winners Barcelona earning £43million from this competition.

Barcelona favourites to retain Champions League while Manchester United are given 5.1 per cent chance of lifting the trophy

* Barcelona have been given a 23.5 per cent chance of retaining the Champions League, according to STATS analysis
* STATS use match analysis to work out likelihood of success
* Chelsea have the best chance of all four English teams
* Arsenal given just 3.6 per cent chance of winning the coveted trophy

Barcelona are the favourites to win the Champions League again this season, according to STATS analysis.

The Catalan giants, who lifted the trophy earlier this year after a 3-1 victory against Juventus, have a 23.5 per cent chance of becoming the first club to retain the trophy.

Meanwhile, Chelsea start the competition knowing they have an 8.6 per cent shot at glory.

The projections are uniquely data-driven using STATS' match analysis, and take into account recent and historic performances of each club and the result of the recent group stage draw.

From the opening rounds, it is also predicted that all English teams will qualify and make the last 16 at least.

Chelsea are given a 73.8 per cent chance of making it through their group, while Arsenal are 77.9 per cent favourites to advance from Group F.

Manchester United have an 80.5 per cent chance of getting through their Champions League group

Manchester City face a tricky European task again this season in the so called 'group of death' and their chances of getting the better of Juventus, Sevilla and Borussia Monchengladbach are ranked at 43.4 per cent.

However, they are still one of the contenders for the main prize. City are fifth in the final table at 5.8 per cent, behind Real, Bayern, Barcelona and Chelsea.

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal side have a 3.6 per cent chance of finally lifting the coveted trophy with STATS data claiming United have a better chance this time around with a 5.1 per cent slice of the chart.

STATS will update their projections as the Champions League goes on, with the tournament proposing to be one of the most open in recent years.

Bayern Munich have a 95.4 per cent chance of winning Group F with Arsenal expected to finish second

Chelsea are strong favourites to top Group G with Porto given a 76.2 per cent to qualify
