Rio apologises for Sagna challenge

Rio Ferdinand has apologised to Bacary Sagna following Manchester United's 1-0 victory over Arsenal, after he left the Frenchman with stud marks across his abdomen.

United were relatively comfortable in Monday's Old Trafford encounter, only suffering one major scare when Edwin van der Sar parried Samir Nasri's second-half effort to Marouane Chamakh. Nemanja Vidic eventually extinguished the danger as he combined with Ferdinand to marshal the United defence to a deserved clean sheet.

However, the England captain was in danger of failing to stay on the pitch during the second half of the top-of-the-table showdown, following a collision with Arsenal defender Sagna.

The incident saw Ferdinand catch Sagna with his studs when leaping for a header. Arsenal felt the United man's challenge had been malicious, with Cesc Fabregas particularly vocal, but Ferdinand protested his innocence, claiming it was an unfortunate collision.

Ferdinand has now issued an apology to Sagna, although he remains adamant there was no ulterior motive to his challenge.

"I never meant to kick Sagna," Ferdinand wrote on his Twitter page. "I went for the ball. Accidents do happen. Sorry for that."

Meanwhile,

Vidic has predicted one of the top four will drop out of the title race by January because they will not be able to match Manchester United's pace.

Three points are all that currently separate the top four teams in the table, but that gap could extend to six if United beat Chelsea this weekend. The Red Devils have been inconsistent in the early part of the season, drawing seven league games, but Vidic claims United are about to hit their stride with fixtures against Sunderland, Birmingham, West Brom and Stoke on the horizon.

"I think this is the time in the season when the table is going to change quite a bit," Vidic said in the Daily Star. "We saw last season how competitive the Premier League is, and it's even more so this year. Every team has raised their game and the quality has improved.

"Things have been very tight up to now, but I think that we'll see two or three teams stepping it up and stretching ahead. That's what has happened over the last few years. I think by the middle of January we'll have much more of an idea as to who is going to be chasing for the title."

Rio Ferdinand is adamant there has been 'no singing and dancing' at Manchester United, even though they are currently top of the Premier League.

Monday's victory over Arsenal lifted Sir Alex Ferguson's side above the Gunners and Manchester City in the table, still with a game in hand.

The Red Devils are now obvious favourites to claim a record 19th league championship, and victory at Chelsea on Sunday would only strengthen that prediction.

But defender Ferdinand insists there is no sense of elation amongst him and his team-mates, just a steely fixation on reclaiming the trophy.

"We are not singing and dancing about being top," said Ferdinand. "We will sing and dance in May if we are still top.

"I would rather be there then. We just want to win that league."

United's defensive performances have improved markedly this term in comparison to this time last year, when they suffered an injury crisis in their backline.

Ferdinand and long-time partner Nemanja Vidic completed their 10th league game together against Arsenal and it would be a major shock if Ferguson split them up for the Chelsea trip.

"I don't know if it is just down to me and him being together," Ferdinand said of United's improvement. "The whole thing is not as fragmented this season.

"I am comfortable with Vida. We have played together for a few years. We know each other's games inside out and that feeds through to the other players."

The Red Devils have failed to win at Stamford Bridge since 2002, but should be relishing Sunday's contest given the Blues' recent slump in form.

However, Ferdinand has been around too long to believe form will have any bearing on the high-profile encounter.

"Top-of-the-table clashes are about what happens on the day," he said. "The type of form you are in doesn't matter.

"There are enough players on the pitch to win the game. Whoever plays best on the day or gets that little bit of luck will come out winners."

The stopper insists Sunday's result will not dictate how United's campaign plays out, adding: "It can all change so quickly if you have a bad run. It would be a good boost for us if we could win but it won't define our season."

"Aku tidak mengerti hal ini, tapi kenyataannya memang seperti itu. Dalam empat musim terakhir, kami telah memenangkan tiga gelar. Tapi, di setiap kesempatan, kami memulai musim tidak sebagai favorit. Hal ini tentu memberikan Anda suatu gambaran. Orang-orang berpikir kalau kami memang benar-benar tidak bagus atau mereka memang tak ingin kami menjadi tim yang bagus," ujar Ferdinand.

Meski kesal, Ferdinand mengaku tak terlalu memusingkan hal ini. "Yang paling penting adalah kami tahu apa yang mampu kami lakukan," ungkapnya. (PA)

7 November, 1978: Rio Ferdinand is born in Peckham, London. Playing for numerous youth teams in the local area, Rio transforms from an attacking-midfielder into a centre-half.

5 May, 1996: Despite interest from many London clubs, Ferdinand decides to join West Ham United’s youth academy in 1994 and two years later makes his competitive debut against Sheffield Wednesday in a 1-1 draw.

November, 2000: Rio joins Leeds United for a British transfer record of £18m, becoming the world’s most expensive defender in the process.

July, 2002: After a rollecoaster ride at Elland Road, Ferdinand signs for Manchester United for a total fee of £29.1m.

19 December, 2003: The Red Devils centre-half fails to take a drugs test and is consequently fined £50,000 and banned from club and international football for eight months.

13 May, 2007: Rio helps United to the Premier League title, picking up his second winners medal.

21 May, 2008: Rio captains the Red Devils to a dramatic Champions League final victory over Chelsea in Moscow.

26 May, 2009: Unfortunately, United are unable to retain the Champions League trophy. A rampant Barcelona side run away 2-0 winners.

Reds wait on Rio

Sir Alex Ferguson will have one or two injury concerns ahead of Tuesday's trip to take on Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.

Rio Ferdinand missed Saturday's 5-0 white-wash against Birmngham City with a groin injury, and he may have to sit out for the game, which is United's game in hand over the rest of the title-chasing pack.

"We'll see how Rio is on Monday morning," Sir Alex told MUTV. "We won't make the decision [about Tuesday] until we see him on Monday."

Michael Carrick was forced off midway through the first half at Old Trafford after a studs-up tackle from Alexander Hleb, and he is likely to be replaced on Tuesday by Darren Fletcher, who was rested against Birmingham.

"Michael Carrick's got a sore one," said the boss. "And it was right on the same spot on his ankle where Steven Gerrard caught him, so unfortunately he couldn't last the game."

Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs were also substituted in the game - Evra at half-time and Giggs after an hour - but both withdrawals were to rest the players with another match in three days' time.

Pemain bertahan Manchester United Rio Ferdnand memuji langkah Aston Villa yang menggaet penyerang Darrent Bent dari Sundeland.

Tidak mudah bagi Aston Villa mendatangkan Bent, mereka harus merogoh kocek dalam-dalam hingga 24 juta poundsterling, tetapi menurut Ferdinand, Villa akan menuai hasil positif.

"Uang besar terlibat dalam transfer Bent, tetapi dia mencetak banyak gol secara konsisten beberapa tahun kebelakang," kata Ferdinand melalui akun twitter.

"Hanya Rooney dan Drogba yang bisa mengungguli catatan gol Bent. Dalam lima tahun terakhir, Bent adalah pencetak gol urutan ketiga di Liga Primer."

Ferdinand Bela Asisten Wasit Perempuan


Manchester - Rio Ferdinand menunjukkan dukungannya buat asisten wasit perempuan Sian Massey. Dia mengecam sikap duo komentator tv yang menghina Massey saat bertugas di laga Wolverhampton kontra Liverpool.

Seperti diberitakan sebelumnya, Massey dihina oleh dua komentator tv Sky Andy Gray dan Richard Keys. Mereka mempertanyakan kapabilitas Massey, terutama dalam memahami aturan off-side beberapa saat sebelum siaran.

Meskipun penghinaan itu tidak dapat didengar oleh penonton, namun pihak Sky lantas meminta maaf bahkan sebelum Gray dan Richards melakukannya di publik.

Atas sikap tidak pantas itu, Gray dan Richards mendapat sanksi dari Sky. Keduanya tidak akan mengisi siaran di satu pertandingan.

Ferdinand turut angkat bicara soal isu ini. Lewat akun Twitter-nya @rioferdy5, bek Manchester United itu mengecam sikap dua komentator itu dan menyebut mereka berpikiran kuno.

"Aku mendukung para wanita menjadi wasit di sepakbola, diskriminasi seharusnya tidak terjadi dalam permainan kami sama sekali ... itu pemikiran kuno jika Anda berpikir sebaliknya," kritik Ferdinand dikutip Mirror.

"Apa ada yang melihat keputusan yang dibuat hakim garis wanita itu ... itu adalah keputusan yang sangat tepat. Nilai mereka seperti pria dalam kemampuannya membuat keputusan,"sambungnya sembari memuji kinerja Massey.
