UNITED'S BEST FA CUP FINAL ENFORCER

Our next place up for grabs is a midfield enforcer - a gritty grafter to complement a more attacking partner in the middle of the park. The shortlist for the enforcer's role is as follows:

PAT CRERAND (1963)
The Scotland international was excellent in the 1963 final against Leicester City. He made a fine interception to set up Denis Law for United's opener and pushed forward at every attempt, probing with his accurate passes. Arguably Man of the Match, the 24-year-old rose to the big occasion and thoroughly deserved his winner's medal as he ended his first season at the club in style.

PAUL INCE (1990, 1994)
Tireless in the 1990 FA Cup final draw with Crystal Palace, he was only denied a spectacular goal by Nigel Martyn's splendid fingertip save. After also proving influential in the replay triumph, he was outstanding four years later when Chelsea were beaten 4-0. Showing real unselfishness, he went through on goal in the closing stages but teed up Brian McClair for a simple tap-in.

ROY KEANE (1994, 1996, 1999, 2004)
Although he won four finals, probably his most impressive display came in 1996 as he helped United secure a tactical triumph over Liverpool. By keeping a close eye on Steve McManaman, the Irishman managed to largely nullify the Merseysiders' threat and he was star man on the day in a lot of people's minds. A key cog in the 1994 side that also lifted the Double, he was in control a decade later against Millwall at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. Unfortunately, his 1999 outing was short-lived as he was injured early on by a Gary Speed foul.

CHARLIE ROBERTS (1909)
A huge influence on United's first FA Cup-winning team in 1909, the captain was a half-back and therefore considered for two modern positions - centre-back and central midfield - in our line-up. Roberts was a determined character and he successfully persuaded manager Ernest Magnall to select match-winner Sandy Turnbull despite the inside-forward having a knee injury. A clever operator who used his intelligence on the field, Roberts became the first Red ever to lift the FA Cup after a 1-0 victory over Bristol City.

UNITED'S BEST FA CUP FINAL ATTACKING MIDFIELDER

Our next position to be resolved is an attacking spot in the midfield and we have shortlisted this quartet of FA Cup winners (successful years in brackets) who all scored in at least one final for the Reds:

BRYAN ROBSON (1983, 1985, 1990)
Probably the king of FA Cup finals for Manchester United, the irrepressible captain produced one of the finest individual performances on the big stage with his two-goal show against Brighton in the 1983 replay. He also earned the penalty converted by Arnold Muhren after a trademark burst into the box and proudly lifted the trophy aloft after a 4-0 win. After an influential display against Everton's Peter Reid in 1985, he scored in the 1990 clash with Crystal Palace with a deflected header and went on to grip the silverware for a third time following the replay. Given this record, Robson was very unlucky not to make the bench for the 1994 final.

PAUL SCHOLES (1996, 1999, 2004)
After being denied by Neville Southall in the defeat to Everton a year earlier, he was part of the Double-winning side that defeated arch rivals Liverpool in 1996 as he came off the bench on 64 minutes. The midfielder played a starring role against Newcastle in 1999, setting up Teddy Sheringham's opener and then rifling home when the striker returned the favour in the second half. After a stylish display against Millwall in 2004, he suffered disappointment in the following year when his penalty was crucially saved by Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann in the shoot-out.

NORMAN WHITESIDE (1983, 1985)
A man whose name is always synonymous with the FA Cup, Whiteside scored a beautiful curler to settle the 1985 clash in 10-man United's favour - one of the greatest cup final-winning goals of all time. It is also worth remembering his contribution in 1983 as he was then a striker and caused problems for Brighton in both games. During the replay, he headed home an Alan Davies cross to become the youngest player to score in an FA Cup final and also ensured he netted in both League Cup and FA Cup finals in the same season.

RAY WILKINS (1983)
Scorer of another classic FA Cup goal for the Reds as his wonderful curling strike beat Graham Moseley to give United the lead against Brighton, only for the Seagulls to force a 2-2 draw with Gary Stevens plundering an equaliser three minutes from time. Although Robson deservedly took all the headlines in the replay, Wilkins' shrewd passing helped the Reds overcome unfancied Albion. It proved to be the only major honour of the England international's distinguished career.

Best FA Cup final right-winger?

Our next position is a right-sided midfielder. We have compiled the following four-man shortlist:

DAVID BECKHAM (1996, 1999)
After testing Liverpool keeper David James with a cross-shot in a rare piece of goalmouth action during a tense 90 minutes in '96, it was the midfielder's corner from the right that led to James parrying into the path of Eric Cantona who fired in the late winner to seal the Double Double. Three years later, Becks moved into the middle of the park when Roy Keane was injured and helped orchestrate a comfortable victory over Newcastle United.

ANDREI KANCHELSKIS (1994)
The Ukrainian flyer posed problems for Chelsea on a rainy day in 1994 as his speed unsettled the Blues defence throughout his 84 minutes on the pitch. One raid deep into enemy territory led to Frank Sinclair barging him to the ground and Cantona coolly converted the penalty for his second spot-kick of the game. The wide-man created other opportunities for his colleagues as United clinched a first-ever Double in 1994.

JOHNNY MORRIS (1948)
An impressive performer in one of United's most exciting FA Cup wins, the first of Sir Matt Busby's trophies at the club, and three years after the end of World War II. An inside-right with flair, aggression and tenacity, despite his stature, he helped the Reds overcome the much-vaunted Seasiders with an enterprising display. He might not have matched his exploits in the win over Aston Villa in the third round, but he provided the free-kick for Jack Rowley's crucial equaliser and warrants a place on our shortlist.

CRISTIANO RONALDO (2004)
Although Ruud van Nistelrooy received the official award because he was nominated by then-England coach Sven Goran Eriksson, the clear Man of the Match against Millwall was a precocious Ronaldo. Relishing the big stage, he showed off all his tricks - including a rabona cross that Paul Scholes was unable to profit from. A firm header opened the scoring, providing a portent of what was to follow in terms of his aerial ability over the years, and the raw youngster led the Lions defenders a merry dance all afternoon.

UNITED'S BEST LEFT-WINGER IN AN FA CUP FINAL

We have compiled a four-man shortlist:

RYAN GIGGS (1994, 1996, 1999, 2004)
Nobody has lifted the trophy more often with United than the outstanding left winger of his generation who perhaps saved his best performance until last in terms of victorious finals. In the 2004 clash with Millwall, he earned a penalty after being fouled by David Livermore, and the Wales international, playing at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, also set up Ruud van Nistelrooy for the Reds' third goal. Due to his work in the other three wins during the 1990s, including having a key move in the build-up to the opening goal against Chelsea, he is the leading candidate for a spot in our XI.

BILLY MEREDITH (1909)
The star man in the club's maiden FA Cup triumph, the Welsh wing wizard was the hub of most of the Reds' attacking work against Bristol City at Crystal Palace. It was his cross that allowed Harold Halse to hit the bar and he was always looking to attack - including registering a few shots on Harry Clay's goal. Later claiming Wincarnis Popular Tonic had helped his energy levels on the big day, the wiry wide man was certainly a constant threat and displayed great stamina.

CHARLIE MITTEN (1948)
A left-sided flair player who was very popular with the United supporters, he did a lot of unheralded work in the final against Blackpool. Despite his obvious attacking prowess, he was handed extra responsibility in shackling Seasiders winger Stanley Matthews. "We knew Stan was the danger because he was a danger to every team," said Mitten. The pair were in discussion after the final whistle, as Mitten admitted it was "every player's dream" to earn a winners' medal and he certainly played his part in one of United's greatest FA Cup final triumphs.

JESPER OLSEN (1985)
A vital outlet for the 10 men during the superb triumph over Everton in 1985, the little Dane continued to run through the Toffees' rearguard despite the energy-sapping conditions. Using his intelligence and skill, he was a key component of a game-plan designed, later by his own admission, to try to hold out for extra-time against the champions. Even after Norman Whiteside's winner, he continued to fulfill a selfless role in order to take the pressure off the over-worked defence.

UNITED'S BEST CUP FINAL SUPPORT STRIKER

Our next position is a support striker as we look for a man to play behind a prolific marksman.
We have compiled a four-man shortlist:

ERIC CANTONA (1994, 1996)
A big-game performer who hogged the headlines on both of his FA Cup final appearances. By calming converting two penalties past Chelsea's Dmitri Kharine in 1994, he set United on course to clinching a first-ever Double. He also fired inches wide from a one-on-one with the Russian keeper when chasing a hat-trick. Following that starring role in the Wembley rain, he completed a personal tale of redemption with an improvised volleyed winner late into the final with Liverpool in 1996. Again it sealed the Double and, after his suspension for the incident at Selhurst Park, it helped cement his status as the league's best player.

JIMMY GREENHOFF (1977)
A goal and an assist in the superb win over Treble-chasing Liverpool in 1977 earns the centre-forward a place on our shortlist. The blond-haired hitman almost opened the scoring following an error by Emlyn Hughes but was still involved in the first goal when his header into space allowed Stuart Pearson to beat Ray Clemence at his near post. Jimmy Case equalised soon afterwards, only for Lou Macari's drive to loop in off Greenhoff's chest for an unusual, but memorable, winner three minutes later.

MARK HUGHES (1985, 1990, 1994)
Another, like Cantona, who has done much to boost United's history in the famous competition, he claimed an assist in his first final in '85 when passing to Norman Whiteside before the Northern Irishman curled in the winner. Five years later, after a stint at Barcelona, Hughes scored twice against Crystal Palace to force a replay during a tense 3-3 draw. The second strike, low past Nigel Martyn, levelled the scores with only seven minutes left. In 1994, he was again on the mark, slamming home to punish a mistake by Frank Sinclair and enhance his reputation as a Wembley specialist.

TEDDY SHERINGHAM (1999)
Although only a substitute, he made a tremendous impact in '99 - as he did in the Champions League final a few days later. An early replacement for the injured Roy Keane, he shone on the big occasion and pulled Newcastle's defence apart - scoring a couple of minutes after coming on with a wonderfully-worked effort. He showed his skill in the build-up after collecting an Andy Cole pass and played a one-two with Paul Scholes before sliding under Steve Harper. Not only did he tee up Scholes for the killer second goal, he nearly scored again with a sublime chip that bounced on top of the bar.
