Bruno Fernandes jokes he'll have to wait another season for the No 8 shirt at Manchester United after Juan Mata agrees a new one-year deal

* Bruno Fernandes wore the No. 8 shirt whilst at former club Sporting Lisbon
* Fernandes called teammate Juan Mata an 'inspiration on and off the pitch'
* Mata has made 273 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 51 goals

Bruno Fernandes has joked that he'll have to wait another season to get his hands on the No 8 shirt after Juan Mata agreed a new one year deal with Manchester United.

The Red Devils confirmed on Friday that the 33-year-old who's previous deal expired last month, had agreed to sign a new contract keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2022.

Fernandes previously wore the No 8 shirt at former club Sporting Lisbon and has worn the No 18 since arriving in Manchester, will now have to wait another year to get the number he covets from a player he called an 'inspiration'.

Spanish midfielder Juan Mata has agreed to sign a new one year deal with Manchester United. Bruno Fernandes has worn the No. 18 shirt since arriving at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon. Mata's (right) new deal means Fernandes will have to continue to wait for the No. 8 shirt

'I guess I'll have to wait for the number 8 another year,' Fernandes tweeted. 'Congrats brother!! Well deserved! An example and an inspiration on and off the pitch.'

The Spanish midfielder moved to Manchester United in 2014 after spending three seasons with Chelsea, and has enjoyed a successful spell at Old Trafford winning the Europa League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and the Community Shield.

Mata, in total has made made 273 appearances for the club, scoring 51 goals in all competitions.

However, in recent seasons he's become more of a peripheral figure; featuring in just 18 games last season.

Bruno Fernandes reveals 'really aggressive' James Garner and 'humble' Anthony Elanga are the two Manchester United youngsters to watch out for, as he insists the academy starlets both have a 'brilliant future' ahead of them

* James Garner had loan spells at Watford and Nottingham Forest last term
* Anthony Elanga scored his first Premier League goal in just his second match
* Bruno Fernandes praised 20-year-old Garner's ability on and off the ball
* He also said that Elanga is 'deserving of everything that's happening to him'

Bruno Fernandes has identified James Garner and Anthony Elanga as Manchester United stars of the future.

Garner, 20, enjoyed loan spells at Watford and Nottingham Forest in the Championship last season and could make his full Premier League debut for the club this term after two substitute appearances to date, while Elanga made his mark on just his second first-team appearance with the opener in the 2-1 season-ending win at Wolves in May.

Both players have featured in pre-season and Fernandes, who has returned to the club after a summer representing Portugal at Euro 2020, told United's official website that he has been impressed by the pair.

Fernandes has praised the 'really aggressive' James Garner and tipped him for a bright future. Garner spent loan spells last term at Watford and Nottingham Forest in the Championship

'Jimmy Garner, I think is a really good player, I really like him and the way he kicks the ball. He's really aggressive off the ball too.

'Elanga was already playing with us and this pre-season he has been brilliant. He's a nice kid, works hard and is really humble and I think he's deserving of everything that's happening to him. I see a brilliant future for him and Jimmy too, and also for all the other kids.'

Teenager Elanga has been particularly impressive in the lead-up to the Red Devils' top-flight opener against Leeds on August 14, starting and scoring in the 2-2 draw with Brentford and also featuring against QPR and Derby.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men next face Everton on Saturday in their final warm-up game before the season properly gets underway against Marcelo Bielsa's side, with the Norwegian harbouring title aspirations.

He also said that Anthony Elanga (right) is 'deserving of everything that's happening to him'. Teenager Elanga scored on just his second Premier League start against Wolves back in May

'I feel us and Chelsea have spent well, worked well and we should look at ourselves as potential challengers,' he said.

'It feels like this season coming up is one of the strongest Premier League seasons. Of course it's been City and Liverpool fighting it out for a few years. Anyone who ends up above last year's champions will be champions.

'I'd rather be an optimist and be wrong than be a pessimist and be right. Of course these boys can, with a maximum effort and maximum sacrifice. We want to start winning trophies and we've laid the foundations.'

Hat-trick hero Bruno Fernandes insists Manchester United made a 'statement' with their thrashing of rivals Leeds... and Portuguese star demands improvement on his tally of 27 goals last season

* Bruno Fernandes says Man United set the tone for their term on the opening day
* United crushed Leeds 5-1 and want trophies after a barren campaign last season
* Hat-trick hero Fernandes is aiming to 'do better' by topping his own 27-goal tally
* The playmaker feels United are 'growing' and praised the impressive Paul Pogba

Bruno Fernandes is targeting another huge goal haul after helping Manchester United to make a 'statement' by hammering hapless Leeds 5-1 at Old Trafford on the opening day of the Premier League season.

United finished a distant second to Manchester City and failed to win a trophy despite Fernandes' 27 goals last season, and the Portugal powerhouse believes their five-star showing is a sign that they can rectify that barren run this time around.

Speaking to BT Sport, Fernandes praised United for having the right 'mentality' and said: 'Every season I want to be better than the last one.

Bruno Fernandes has already collected a matchball this season – but he wants to achieve more

'With every goal and performance I want to do better. I have started with three goals but there is a long way to go.

'The team is growing up and now we try to do better. The statement today was against Leeds and the next game will be against Southampton [at St Mary's on Sunday], so we will focus game by game. We can do something with this mentality.'

With four assists, midfield partner Paul Pogba was the only man with a case for rivalling Fernandes' man of the match display, and Fernandes knows that the pair's success is central to United's hopes.

'We know the quality of Paul – that is not for discussion,' he said of United's record signing.

The midfield marvel was on inspired form with a treble in a 5-1 opening day victory over Leeds. Fernandes offered praise to assist machine Paul Pogba after the France star set up four goals

'We know what he can do and we saw that today. He is working for us and we know he can make this performance.'

Fernandes has been impressed by United's new arrivals, including centre-back Raphael Varane – whose signing was confirmed on Saturday – and England livewire Jadon Sancho.

'We know the quality of the players who come in now,' he reflected. 'The team was already good and we saw that last season, even though we did not achieve the trophies.'

Striker Marcus Rashford was the only other United player to notch more than 20 goals last season, scoring 21 times.

Bruno Fernandes says the arrival of international teammate Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United will help the team get 'closer' to winning their first piece of silverware under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

* Manchester United are yet to win a trophy under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* Excitement is high after the signing of club legend Cristiano Ronaldo last month
* Bruno Fernandes feels Ronaldo's arrival boosts their chances of success
* Ronaldo has won 33 trophies playing for United, Real Madrid and Juventus

Bruno Fernandes believes the signing of international team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo will boost Manchester United's chances of winning silverware this season.

The midfielder has made a big impact himself since arriving in January 2020 from Sporting Lisbon but has yet to win a trophy following his £68million move to Old Trafford.

United have in fact not won a trophy since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho back in December 18, with the 2017 Europa League their latest piece of silverware.

Fernandes though is aware of what Ronaldo - who has won 33 trophies altogether in a career at United, Real Madrid and Juventus - can bring to Old Trafford and is confident about their chances of success.

He told Manchester United's official club website: 'We know the enthusiasm will be red hot, everyone knows Cristiano is in the house.

'Everyone is very confident and happy that he is back, the players too.

Bruno Fernandes believes Cristiano Ronaldo's return will boost Man United's trophy hopes. Fernandes and United fell short in the Europa League final to Villarreal earlier this year. Ronaldo though is a serial winner and Fernandes is confident about United's chances

'We know what he can give us, and our focus, like Cristiano’s, is to win. With him, we know we are closer to winning [trophies].'

The closest Fernandes has got to a trophy with United was their dramatic penalty shootout defeat by Villarreal in the Europa League final earlier this year.

Solskjaer's side had a successful summer already before they signed Ronaldo with the arrivals of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

Ronaldo's arrival came after it had looked like the United legend might be on for a shock move to their local rivals Manchester City.

The 36-year-old left United back in 2009 to forge a record breaking career at Real Madrid.

He has an impressive trophy haul across his first stint at United, Real Madrid and Juventus, something in which the majority of his teammates at the Red Devils are unable to say.

Ronaldo and Fernandes have just been on international duty together where the attacker broke the international scoring record in a 2-1 victory over the Republic of Ireland to move onto 111 goals.

Bruno Fernandes and Manchester United 'in positive talks' over extending his contract as Red Devils 'prioritise' keeping him and Paul Pogba at Old Trafford

* Bruno Fernandes has shone for Manchester United since his arrival in 2020
* United hope to agree a new contract with the midfielder by the end of the year
* Both sides have been in talks since July and are hoping to find an agreement
* Old Trafford bosses are also ready to revisit talks with team-mate Paul Pogba

Manchester United have reportedly already opened talks with Bruno Fernandes over extending his stay at the club.

The Portugal midfielder has been a revelation since arriving at Old Trafford in January 2020 from Sporting Lisbon, scoring 44 goals in 85 games and emerging as one of the key players under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Fernandes is already tied down to United until the summer of 2025 but the club are already keen to reward Fernandes for his excellent form.

Romano adds that United would hope to have the 27-year-old tied down to a new deal by the end of the year and that negotiations have been ongoing since July.

Fernandes appears keen to remain with the Red Devils and a new deal would be a boost for the club who are also keen on keeping his team-mate Paul Pogba.

Both players have already been key men in Solskjaer's revamped attack this term, which also includes summer signings Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.

The France midfielder who arrived in 2016 for a then world record fee of £89million has slowly gained favour under Solskjaer's reign but is out of contract next summer.

Manchester United have reportedly opened talks over a new contract with Bruno Fernandes. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has got the best out of Fernandes since the midfielder's 2020 arrival. United also want to prioritise keeping Paul Pogba, and hope to offer him a new deal. Both midfielders have been key men at the start of the season in United's revamped attack

The 28-year-old is now reportedly leaning towards staying at United, with talks over extending his current deal expected to take place in due course.

His refusal so far to extend that contract had led to fears he could depart on a free transfer next summer.

But The Athletic claim United's 4-1 victory against Newcastle on Saturday has had a significant bearing on the World Cup winner's thinking about his future and that he is having serious second thoughts about leaving Solskjaer's side.

Pogba took his tally of assists this season to seven in just four top-flight matches after setting up Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard for their goals against Steve Bruce's men.

'I will take it again without any fear or dread': Bruno Fernandes comes out fighting over his crucial missed penalty in Man United's defeat by Aston Villa and insists he will continue to take them, despite calls for Cristiano Ronaldo to step up

* Manchester United were awarded an injury-time penalty against Aston Villa
* Bruno Fernandes missed the opportunity to equalise late on from the spot
* He blasted the ball high into the Stretford End during United's 1-0 loss to Villa
* He has apologised for his miss and promised fans he will 'be ready next time'

Bruno Fernandes has apologised for his penalty miss against Aston Villa and promised fans he will 'be ready next time'.

Manchester United were awarded an injury-time penalty after Kortney Hause handled the ball in the box during their 1-0 loss to Villa.

As a result, Fernandes - who had only missed one of his 22 penalty attempts for United when Newcastle's Karl Darlow denied him in October last year - stepped up to take the spot-kick.

However, many believed Cristiano Ronaldo should have been the man to take the all-important penalty.

Nevertheless, Fernandes took the strike and blasted the ball high into the Stretford End.

Speaking about his failed attempt on Instagram, Fernandes said: 'Nobody is more frustrated and disappointed than me for missing the penalty and the consequent defeat.

United were awarded an injury-time penalty after Kortney Hause handled the ball in the box. Many believed Cristiano Ronaldo should have been the one to take the penalty

'I’ve always assumed my responsibilities and I've always embraced them under pressure in moments like this.

'Today, I failed. But I took a step forward and faced the challenge with the same ambition and responsibility as when, on the many other occasions, the ball ended up in the net.

'Criticism and contrasting opinions are a big part of football. I’ve learned to live with it, even using them to drive me on, and I consider it all a very important part of my commitment to never stop trying to improve and to become the best player I can possibly be, for me and the team.

However, Fernandes (above) took the strike and blasted the ball high into the Stretford End. As a result of his failed attempt, Manchester United lost the game against Aston Villa 1-0

'Today I once again took the responsibility given to me almost since I joined United and I will take it again without any fear or dread whenever called upon.

'The most important thing for me is to win together and I’ll always do everything I can to help my teammates and the club to be the best we can be.

'I'm a player who leaves everything on the pitch, with great desire and commitment. And that’s what I'll continue to do.

'Thank you for all your support after the final whistle! Hearing you chanting my name in the stadium was very emotional… I will come back stronger for me, because these are the standards I hold myself to, but most of all for my teammates and our fans who have always supported us.'

The captain's Instagram post came shortly after fans had criticised him for stepping up ahead of 'one of the greatest players who has ever lived', Ronaldo.

Many supporters took to social media to call Fernandes out for the decision, with one writing: 'Don’t care who you are. If you have a last minute penalty, and you have Ronaldo on the pitch, you give it to him. If he misses, he misses. But you give it to him. He’s the guy for such moments.'

Another added: 'Apparently Ronaldo asked to take the penalty and Bruno ignored him and then Pogba tells Ronaldo to let Bruno take it. The audacity to not let Ronaldo take the penalty knowing how good he is at them. They deserved to lose.'

One fan said: 'Imagine having Christiano Ronaldo in your team - one of the greatest players who has ever lived & a machine for scoring goals - & for him not to be taking your penalties?'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fumed at VAR's decision not to overturn Aston Villa's late winner. Kortney Hause's strike served a heavy blow to United who had the chance to go top

Solskjaer also had a lot to say after the game. He blasted VAR's 'inconsistency' and fumed at the decision not to overturn Aston Villa's late winner.

VAR made the decision to allow Aston Villa's goal to stand even though striker Ollie Watkins was standing close to goalkeeper David de Gea when Kortney Hause's 88th-minute header from a corner flew in.

Speaking after the game, Solskjaer said: 'You can see the inconsistency again, VAR and decision-making.

'Watkins is clear standing on or touching David as the header has gone in so it's a foul or he is offside. The linesman did his job he called it into VAR but they turned the decision down and it is a goal unfortunately, so bad decisions again.'

'We CANNOT do this anymore': Bruno Fernandes insists Manchester United 'have to learn' from their mistakes if they are to win a trophy after dropping points at home for the second week in a row

* Manchester United dropped points at home for the second successive week
* The Red Devils drew 1-1 with Everton after losing to Aston Villa last weekend
* Midfielder Bruno Fernandes says United have to 'learn from their mistakes'
* United need to improve if they are to win their first silverware since 2017

Bruno Fernandes says 'many, many things' have to be done better after all too familiar mistakes cost Manchester United potentially key Premier League points against Everton.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men are four points better off than the same stage last season but they have stumbled into the international break.

United won four of their first five Premier League matches but last weekend's shock 1-0 home loss to Aston Villa was followed by Saturday's frustrating 1-1 draw with Everton at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes was frustrated as Manchester United again threw away points at home

Fernandes knows they need to buck up their ideas if they are going to win a first trophy since 2017 and is fed up with repeating the same post-match frustrations.

'Of course, I think it's really difficult for us,' the Portuguese said.

'We played really well first half, create a lot of chances. In the second half we slow it down again. Once again we make that mistake. We have to learn.

'We have to learn and the time is now because we cannot do this anymore. We did it so many times. We cannot slow the game down when we're winning.

'We have to make it quicker, score once again one, two goals and after, OK, you can slow it down and make them run a little bit more.

'But we have to carry on now. There's no point... we can be frustrated because of the result, of course, but we have to come back after the national team and then be ready for the next games.'

Fernandes is not shirking responsibility in his comments, holding his hands up for the poor corner that led to the Everton break that saw Andros Townsend cancel out Anthony Martial's opener.

'It's a really bad corner from me,' he said. 'We don't close well enough outside of the box, we don't clear the ball, we don't make a foul - many mistakes starting on my corner.

'We should do it better and we should learn because it's not the first time that's happened.

'We have to do better next time because now we have to do something, we have to change something because something is not working to concede so many counter-attacks.

'That is about us players inside of the pitch doing something. It's not about someone else.

Fernandes insists United 'have to learn' if they are to win their first silverware since 2017

'We have to make a foul, we have to stop the game, I have to take a better corner. Many, many things have to be done better.'

The draw increases scrutiny on Solskjaer and the side but the day was not entirely negative, with Martial scoring a morale-boosting first United goal in eight months.

'It's nice having Anto scoring goals again,' Fernandes told MUTV.

'We are happy for him because it is not easy for Anto. 'Of course he was playing a lot. Two seasons ago he was the best scorer of the team, so it's difficult for him not to play as many games as he wants.

'But he shows he's ready when he comes on. He shows once again he can be an important part for us and he will be again in the future.'

United travel to Leicester after the international break, while Everton will host West Ham buoyed by an impressive display at Old Trafford.

Default Re: Bruno Fernandes

Is star man Fernandes now part of the problem? Former talisman is frustrated with Solskjaer but is 'too emotional' and went missing in defeat by City... his fine form has vanished and it's hurting United

* Bruno Fernandes is one of the many players not happy right now at Man United
* In the previous campaign the playmaker was a Player of the Season contender
* Fernandes' form appears to have dried up and United are suffering badly
* Return of club legend Cristiano Ronaldo has both helped and hindered his game

The waves are crashing overboard on the ship that is Manchester United right now, that much is no secret to anybody.

Seas are getting rougher and, at this precise moment, kinder elements do not appear to be on the horizon.

Of the unhappy crew mates, Bruno Fernandes appears to be the one with the biggest axe to grind. The Portuguese talisman is far from happy.

Indeed, as reported by Sportsmail, Fernandes is growing frustrated by a lack of clear direction under boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff.

It would be fair to say a malaise has well and truly set in at Old Trafford and Fernandes would not be far wrong. United have looked directionless for some time, and there are no signs of a turning tide.

He went missing during the abject Old Trafford defeat to noisy neighbours Man City and former Red Gary Neville labelled him 'too emotional' in the aftermath. So, is Fernandes himself part of the problem?

Bruno Fernandes is growing tired of United's situation and feels not enough direction is given. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on the brink of losing his job while stars like Fernandes are struggling

We only have to rewind 12 months to observe Fernandes at his scintillating, irrepressible best.

During the last campaign Fernandes was a candidate for Player of the Month after every passing four weeks, and naturally a hot favourite for PFA Player of the Year.

As United coasted into a second-placed finish behind rivals City, ahead of an injury-ravaged Liverpool, Fernandes was the driving force behind everything that was good and positive.

It would not be an exaggeration to say the former Sporting Lisbon man was on a upwards sky rocket trajectory ever since his arrival in January 2020.

Fernandes may have signed for United just as fans were then barred from stadiums due to coronavirus restrictions and the many lockdown periods, but it did not matter.

He took to life in the Premier League like a duck to water and wasted little time in not only becoming United's stand-out player, but also the most formidable star in the English game.

For as much as United may have had off-days, Fernandes was always there to provide a spark and help snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Now, however, the tables have turned.

United are down on their luck and Fernandes appears to have let the ongoing demise really permeate into him. The form has vanished and, right now, so have United's chances.

The 27-year-old has four goals and three assists in the Premier League so far this season, at the time of writing. Those figures are by no means to be scoffed at, yet a player of Fernandes' dizzying heights can, and has, regularly produced better.

More worryingly, the goals are seemingly drying up. What made Fernandes so devastatingly effective for United was his uncanny ability to find the back of the net, while also making everything else happen around him.

The United No 18 has not registered for his side since early September, when he slotted home in the 4-1 rout of Newcastle.

Premier League games - 11

Premier League goals - 4

Assists - 3

Champions League games - 4

Assists - 5

EFL Cup games - 1

Cristiano Ronaldo's return should have helped Fernandes, but looks to have done the opposite

He is, however, still making things happen. Of Fernandes' last six games for United in all competitions, he has notched four assists. United have won only two of these matches - one being the most narrow of late victories over Atalanta, and another the scalping of a toothless Tottenham who failed to have a single shot on target.

Fernandes is suffering from the downturn of the whole United squad, and so it comes as no surprise that he has flagged real concerns of direction and progression.

United's current situation means he is contributing less effectively as a result and, with him now entering his prime years as a European midfielder, it is only natural that Fernandes needs to start asking the big questions - for the sake of his own career.

The warning signs have been present though. At the tail end of last season United endured a wobble which dovetailed tellingly with Fernandes going quiet in matches; particularly against large-scale opposition.

Back in May Liverpool had rocked up at Old Trafford and taken a 4-2 victory, as United faded despite Fernandes himself opening the scoring just 10 minutes in.

Questions at the time were asked of Fernandes. Was he burning out just when United needed him most? Or, rather, was the heavy overreliance on him taking its toll?

Yet still, he provided four goals in the last 10 games of the campaign to cap off an impeccable season of 18 goals and 11 assists in 37 Premier League matches, with a further nine goals in Europe and a solo strike in the FA Cup.

United had done enough to tuck in safely into second place and end the season on a nice positive - albeit perhaps masked by the shortcomings and injury crisis of fellow top-four rivals. Title winners City had long since run away with proceedings.

The Portuguese talisman was one of many United players who failed to get anywhere near City. Fernandes cuts a dejected figure as the weeks go by, but he must help United regain their form

Yet any underlying issues were brushed over. Many fans and pundits alike shared the same strong opinion that United, and Fernandes particularly, would benefit from an exciting summer of bustling transfer window activity.

And indeed, said business was conducted at pace. United finally clinched the £75million signing of Jadon Sancho, before nabbing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid and then stunning the football world to bring Cristiano Ronaldo home.

Surely Fernandes, of all people, was licking his lips in anticipation? With such an array of talent flooding through the doors at United's Carrington base, it would undoubtedly be a case of him no longer carrying the club by the scruff of the neck.

Right...? Well, not exactly.

Whether it is a result of no longer being the solo star man or realising that United still aren't making any clear, defined progress despite such a star-studded squad - Fernandes just isn't turning it on like he did. Perhaps it is a combination of both elements.

The arrival of compatriot and close friend Ronaldo should have boosted Fernandes tenfold, yet his game appears to have been compromised as a result. Sure, Fernandes now has one of the best goalscorers to ever play the game making runs in front of him, but this is a Ronaldo in the twilight of his career.

It is also, rather importantly, still a Ronaldo who demands the limelight and the constant sacrifice of his team-mates around him. Remember those instinctive, off-the-cuff runs of Fernandes last season? We do appear to be seeing less of them.

If he felt like the main man last season, the same cannot be said for Fernandes now. United have got much better, on paper, yet the results say anything but.

Fernandes is completely justified in airing his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, but the problems simply cannot vanish overnight. Right now he, like the cohort of his team-mates, is part of the problem and must work out how to become at least something of a solution.

Whether the writing really is on the wall for Solskjaer or not remains to be seen, but an already faltering season is running the very real risk of de-railing altogether.

Regardless of his current happiness levels at Old Trafford, Fernandes must return to the fore for the Red Devils and hold the trident once more. If not, the nine-point gap between United and the summit could start to look a whole lot uglier, very quickly.

Default Re: Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes 'hasn't been the same player' since Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Manchester United, insists Andy Cole... with ex-striker claiming midfielder's 'WHOLE game' has changed

* Bruno Fernandes scored 28 goals for Man United during the 2020-21 season
* Portugal midfielder however has scored just twice since opening day this term
* His frustrations in front of goal continued in Monday night's defeat by Wolves
* And Andy Cole believes his form has turned since Cristiano Ronaldo's return

Andy Cole believes Bruno Fernandes has suffered as a result of Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Manchester United last summer, claiming the midfielder 'is not the same player he was last season.'

The 27-year-old scored 28 goals and recorded 17 assists in 58 appearances across all competitions in 2020-21, 18 and 11 of which came in 37 Premier League games respectively.

However, Fernandes has scored just five goals this term in 24 appearances and has netted just twice since the opening day of the current top-flight season.

The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder's frustrations in front of goal continued on Monday night when he could only rattle the bar from point-blank range following Nemanja Matic cut-back in the 1-0 reverse by Wolves, when it was still goalless.

Bruno Fernandes (L) has not been the same player since the return of Cristiano Ronaldo (R), according to Andy Cole. Fernandes has scored just five goals this season and just twice since the opening day

And speaking to Premier League Productions, former United striker Cole - who scored 121 goals in 275 matches for the club - said Fernandes' struggles could be the result of his 'whole game' changing since the return of Ronaldo, 36, from Juventus.

'He has to score, as simple as that,' Cole said. 'He gets into a great position and that's a tap-in for him.

'It's been funny at the moment. Ronaldo's come back and it's like [Bruno's] whole game has changed.

'I looked at him this season, since Ronaldo's come back and he hasn't been the same player he was last season.

'And you look at that and think – why? He has the quality, he shouldn't worry about whether Ronaldo's in the team because they're both quality players who want the same thing.

'But his form has changed since Ronaldo has come back.'

However, club legend Rio Ferdinand fears his old side are in fact wasting Ronaldo by not playing to his strengths.

His goal frustrations continued against Wolves after missing a gilt-edged chance for United. And Cole believes the Portugal midfielder's form has changed since Ronaldo's return

He said: 'My biggest gripe is that if you've got [Edinson] Cavani and Ronaldo in your team — two of probably the best attackers of the ball from wide areas — and you don't play with any real width or any people that are capable of putting the ball in good areas — then it almost feels like a pointless task.

'You've got to play to their strengths. It's like when we played Falcao years ago. You bring in someone great at attacking balls, but then never cross the ball. How can you expect them to produce the goods?'

United remain four points adrift of the Champions League places following Joao Moutinho's winner for the West Midlands outfit.

The Portuguese duo will now turn their attention to back-to-back clashes against Aston Villa, with the first an FA Cup third-round clash at Old Trafford on Monday before their Premier League meeting at Villa Park five days later.
