United reach agreement to sign Varela

Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement to sign 20-year-old defender Guillermo Varela from Uruguayan club Club Atlético Peñarol for an undisclosed fee.

Guillermo will immediately join up with the Uruguay Under-20 squad for the upcoming FIFA Under 20 World Championships in Turkey.

On Friday, Manchester United reached an agreement with Club Atlético Peñarol to sign Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela.

Here, we assess the highly-rated youngster and learn more about his promising career...

The basics: Varela, who was born in Montevideo on 24 March 1993, is an ambitious full-back who plays on the right flank for South American giants Penarol in his native Uruguay.

The background: The 20-year-old has made one first-team appearance at the Centenario Stadium but is a regular for Uruguay's Under-20s with nine caps to his name.

The links: Guillermo recently completed a trial at Carrington and later spoke positively about the experience to South American radio station Tirando Paredes: “I have trained with the first-team. I am very happy and I was received very well. It was a surprise to get the chance to test myself with Manchester United. I'm glad and happy, and grateful to Penarol who allowed me to travel. I was treated so well and Chicharito helped me a lot.”

The manager: “This is what he deserves. It is a shame to see him go but you can’t deny him the opportunity to join a club like this.” – Penarol head coach Jorge Da Silva.

The future: After reaching an agreement at Carrington on Friday, Varela's next step is to fly to Turkey to represent Uruguay at the World Under-20 Championships – where future team-mates Angelo Henriquez (Chile), Sam Johnstone, Tom Thorpe and Larnell Cole (England) are also taking part. The tournament begins on Friday 21 June.

Manchester United are set to complete the signing of talented young Uruguayan Guillermo Varela, as revealed by Sportsmail last month.

The full-back spent time on trial at Old Trafford in the final weeks of last season, and did enough to impress coaches and earn an offer.

Steps had already been made to sign the 20-year-old before David Moyes was confirmed as successor to Sir Alex Ferguson last month.

Varela will arrive in Manchester shortly to complete the deal after a fee of around £1million was agreed with his club, Penarol. The Uruguyan club's treasurer, Rodolfo Catino, is travelling with the player to iron out the final few details.

He Tweeted on Wednesday: 'In San Pablo airport waiting for the connection to London, with Guille [Varela] about to board.'

Meanwhile, Robin van Persie believes his club are capable of achieving more success even without Ferguson as manager.

'I have a feeling we can do much more and that we can win many more trophies. I've had a year to work with everyone and now the whole (coaching) staff is changing which makes it a new challenge,' Van Persie told the Dutch football union website on Wednesday.

'I've got to know the players through and through and I've a feeling they have a lot more (success) in them. A whole lot more,' he added.
'The season began as a nice challenge but you never know how these things will turn out. But now I have a sense of pride, it was a great season. A pressured year.'

Van Persie, who helped United win the Premier League title last season after joining from Arsenal, said he would have liked to have worked longer under Ferguson who retired last month after 26 years at United and was replaced by David Moyes.

'I'd have preferred it if he'd stayed a few more years but I understand his decision. I'm even prouder that I could work under him for a year. I could see he was a legendary man.'

Untuk saat ini mungkin sebatas tim U-21 aja secara klo nggak salah dia bahkan blom pernah bermain untuk tim senior Penarol. Jadi ya... sabar aja.

Benar, Varela pun hanya trial selama beberapa minggu jelang musim 2013/14 berakhir. Lucky man, SAF pernah bilang saat rumor transfer Forlan lagi bergema, bahwa ia memang tertarik mendatangkan bakat- bakat baru lagi dari Amerika latin.
