OLE EXPLAINS DUBAI TRIP
Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained why he is taking his squad to a training camp in Dubai this weekend. After the Reds take on Reading in the Emirates FA Cup third round at Old Trafford, hoping to extend Ole's winning run as boss to five games, there will be a chance to prepare for the next Premier League outing against Tottenham at Wembley in warm temperatures at the same venue the club visited last year. “I've got to know them [the players] because I've had plenty of time to speak to them,” Ole said at his press conference on Friday. “But we haven't had plenty of time to train. ”It'll be a time to get some fitness work and work hard with them, so, if any of the players think it's a holiday, they're wrong, because we're there to stick together, work hard on the physical part of it and, of course, think a little bit ahead to the Tottenham game.“ The chance to train and work on specifics will be important after the flurry of fixtures over the festive period, with the Reds the only top-flight team to win all of our games in that spell, as Ole looks to ensure everybody is playing the way he wants. “I really enjoy working with them,” he added. “They want to learn, they want to improve and that's key of any footballer. If you're hungry enough and humble enough to know that I've got something to improve on, to work on, then we'll improve as a team in the end.” www.manutd.com |

DUBAI: WHAT THE UNITED PLAYERS ARE SAYING
Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard have been reflecting on an enjoyable and hugely beneficial training camp in Dubai, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United squad get set to face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The squad once again trained at the hugely impressive Nad Al Sheba complex for around 90 minutes on Wednesday and afterwards, the aforementioned trio of players sat down with us and discussed the importance of a trip like this from a fitness and team-bonding perspective. “It’s a good time for the squad to get away and have some really good bonding time,” explained McTominay, “but we've also been able to work really hard on different formations and different ways we want to play against bigger teams in the games coming up.” The players' famous competitiveness came to the fore in a small-side training match, and a group featuring the likes of David De Gea, Andreas Pereira, Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and McTominay emerged triumphant. “Every session we’ve had so far has been very, very competitive,” added Scott. “You expect nothing less from the boys – they’re the same every single day in training, whether it’s in Dubai or back home in England or in another country. We always give 100 per cent.” His victorious team included the four youngest players on the trip - Tahith Chong, James Garner, Angel Gomes and Mason Greenwood. Reflecting on the game, McTominay told us: “The young boys were on flames! ”It was a good round-robin [tournament at the end]. It’s good for the boys to have a bit of fun at the end of an intense session, especially in the heat.“ McTominay's fellow midfielder Pogba joined up with his team-mates on Tuesday in the Middle East, after initially staying behind for treatment on a knock, and the midfielder says the players have put in some vital work on the training pitch so far. “It’s not a holiday, we came here to work,” said the Frenchman. “We don’t get this kind of weather a lot in Manchester, so obviously to get this weather and vitamin D is always good. It’s good for the head. ”The training is intense as we’re preparing for a big game [against Tottenham], so we need to be ready. We've had good conditions to do some hard work and when we go back we’ve got a fresh mind and fresh air and we come back to focus even more.“ Lingard echoed those sentiments and talked about the importance of being able to spend quality time together away from the training pitch too. “We've had some downtime and free time obviously to get to know each other better,” said Jesse. “It's been a great bonding trip for everyone, especially for Ole to get to know the players. The whole trip has been a great experience.” www.manutd.com |

UNITED'S FINAL DAY IN DUBAI
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players bid farewell to Dubai on Thursday after another solid training session in the sunshine. The Reds have enjoyed an intense week of work in preparation for Sunday’s Premier League contest with Tottenham Hotspur and Ole and his staff are pleased with how the trip has gone. Looking ahead to the Wembley contest, first-team coach Mike Phelan told us big games are what United players always relish and Sunday will be no different “It’s a big challenge,“ he said. ”But every game at Manchester United is a big challenge because it means you have to express yourself in different ways. The players are really looking forward to it, you can tell that from just being around them. They understand this is the stage that they want, they want to play in these huge games and they want to win these huge games. “They want to be the best players on the football pitch again and we need to encourage that. It’s a great occasion being at Wembley, even though it’s not a cup final, but we need to make sure we perform and have a discipline about us that can get us a strong performance and the result we want.” Reflecting on having been able to spend some quality time together on and off the pitch together in Dubai, Solskjaer added: “It’s been great. You know it’s a long, hard season and we’ll have ups and downs together. You’ve got to deal with the wins, defeats, setbacks and players not playing but, when you work together, they all want to play and they all want the best for their team-mates and everyone understands this is a team game.” The Reds will travel back to Manchester on Thursday afternoon with Solskjaer due to address the media at his press conference when the team land. Remember to check out our gallery of images from the final day in Dubai and look out for updates from Ole’s press briefing on our official app from 20:45 GMT. www.manutd.com |

UNITED FOR UNICEF DINNER RAISES £225K FOR CHILDREN'S CHARITY
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer led the Manchester United first-team squad at Old Trafford this evening as he attended his first United for Unicef Gala Dinner since returning to the club as caretaker manager. The annual event celebrated the 20-year partnership between Manchester United and Unicef and raised a fantastic £225,000 for the world’s leading children’s organisation. These funds will go towards helping some of the world’s most vulnerable children affected by disasters and those living through conflict. Offering fans the chance to rub shoulders with their footballing heroes, the black-tie event is a highlight of the club’s social calendar and was this year hosted by television presenter and lifelong Manchester United supporter, Angus Deayton. Also in attendance was the Brits’ Critics Choice Award nominee Lewis Capaldi, who performed his hit track Grace during dinner. Fundraising games and a live auction offered guests the chance to win a number of once-in-a-lifetime prizes. The star lot was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s custom-made, co-branded squad watch, which contributed an incredible £35,000 to the fundraising total. This limited-edition piece, presented by Ole himself, symbolises his return to Manchester United as the caretaker manager. Speaking on stage at the event, Ole said, “It’s absolutely fantastic to be back home and to be a part of this club again. “I remember the first association I had with Unicef as a player in Beijing in 1999 and I’m honoured to now be the goodwill ambassador for Unicef back home in Norway. For me, it’s the closest charity to my heart and it’s fantastic to see so many people here and hopefully we can raise a lot of money tonight.” All funds raised from this year’s dinner will go towards Unicef’s Children’s Emergency Fund, allowing Unicef to act wherever the needs of children are the greatest. Unicef responds to around 300 humanitarian emergencies each year in some of the most dangerous places in the world. Mike Penrose, Executive Director, Unicef UK said, “Thanks to the club, the players and fans, over the last 20 years United for Unicef has changed the lives of millions of children around the world. “It is our aim to ensure that children caught up in emergencies have the chance to rebuild their lives – through access to quick and sustainable support. Children are in desperate need of life-saving food, water and medicine as well as a safe space to learn and be protected. Funds raised from tonight's Gala Dinner will enable Unicef to reach even more of the world's most vulnerable children.” The United for Unicef partnership is the longest running of its kind between a football club and a global children’s organisation and to date has raised over £4 million, helping to change the lives of millions of children worldwide. www.manutd.com |
