Rio Ferdinand Pernah Tolak Kans ke Barcelona, Kenapa?
Kris Fathoni W - detikSport

Afif Farhan - detikSport

London - Paul Pogba kerap dikritik terbaru dari legenda Liverpool, Graeme Souness. Rio Ferdinand pun membela dengan bijak.

Kisah bermula ketika Paul Pogba membalas kritik Souness.

Cibiran Pogba berbuntut panjang. Dalam acara bincang-bincang sepakbola 'The Football Show' yang disiarkan Sky Sports, Dave Jones selaku pembawa acara melontarkan celetukan agar Souness pamer medali saja agar Pogba tahu siapa dirinya.

Rio Ferdinand masih percaya, kalau Manchester United masih membutuhkan Paul Pogba.

'It's a disgraceful decision': Rio Ferdinand SLAMS referee David Coote for overturning his own 'nailed-on' penalty after a slack Bruno Fernandes challenge on Conor Gallagher in Manchester United's win over West Brom at Old Trafford

* Rio Ferdinand has slammed the decision to chalk off a penalty for West Brom
* Man United saw off the Baggies with a Bruno Fernandes spot kick the difference
* Fernandes conceded a penalty before VAR intervened to rule out the spot kick
* Ferdinand said the decision was 'disgraceful' and that it was a 'nailed on' penalty

Rio Ferdinand has blasted the decision to overturn a penalty awarded to West Bromwich Albion as the Baggies fell to a 1-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Slaven Bilic's side made United work for all three points with a retaken Bruno Fernandes penalty the difference in a game where former United man Sam Johnstone dazzled between the sticks for the visitors.

But the Baggies will leave Old Trafford feeling hard done by having been denied what appeared a clear spot kick after Fernandes brought down Conor Gallagher just after half time.

Rio Ferdinand has slammed the decision to overrule a West Brom penalty on Saturday. Bruno Fernandes was in the thick of the action as United beat Albion 1-0 at Old Trafford

Referee David Coote was advised to refer to the pitch-side monitor and review the decision he had made and determined that the call should be reversed.

The incident was all the more damaging as moments later United were awarded their own spot kick which proved to be the difference on Saturday evening.

And Ferdinand has slammed the decision to overrule the penalty, insisting that the significant reversal had a major impact on the outcome of the game.

'It's a disgraceful decision.' the United legend said on BT Sport.

'He got it right first time. It's a nailed-on penalty. How can he go against his own decision on that?

'The game’s been taken from under West Brom’s noses. That was so clear.'

The Portuguese seemed to have fouled Conor Gallagher and David Coote awarded a penalty

But VAR advised for the decision to be reviewed and Coote overruled the call for the Baggies

Former referee Peter Walton could not justify the decision made by Coote to overrule his own call.

'I didn’t think there was a clear and obvious error,' he told BT Sport.

'I don’t think the VAR should have got involved. By asking the referee to go over to the pitch side monitor, they’re inferring that he’s made a mistake.'

As has been the case in most games since he joined from Sporting Lisbon in January, Fernandes was in the thick of the action as United picked up their first three points at home in the league this season.

The 25-year-old gave his perspective on the three key moments in the game - his incident with Gallagher, the failed spot kick saved by Johnstone and the retaken penalty.

United went on to clinch all three points in an under par performance on Saturday evening. The win over West Brom is United's first three points won at home in the league this season

'I felt in the first moment I touched the ball,' he said. 'What I felt is I first touched the ball and then the player.

'I scored the second one, but I need to score the first one. The three points are the most important. I think we will do much better and we will do.

'It is really important to us winning this game because we need points in the league. We create a lot, but I think we can do much better.'

Rio Ferdinand says there are NO leaders in the Manchester United squad and insists Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire are NOT captain material: 'I don't see anybody who is going to ruffle feathers'

* Rio Ferdinand offered a damning verdict of Manchester United's current squad
* Ferdinand wants to see players taking on more responsibility in leadership terms
* Former United star questioned Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes' presence
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have endured a very slow start to the new campaign

Rio Ferdinand has delivered a damning assessment of Manchester United's squad, claiming there is a real lack of leadership among Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

United have endured a very slow start to the new campaign, sitting 10th in the Premier League with 13 points from eight matches after just about scraping past lowly West Brom on the weekend.

And ahead of their Champions League home clash against Istanbul Basaksehir, former United centre back Ferdinand tore into the current squad while claiming Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes are not captain material.

Rio Ferdinand claimed Man United's Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes are not leaders

Ferdinand told BT Sport: 'We were there the other day watching this game (West Brom). It's not just about Ole on the sidelines, or Mike Phelan or Michael Carrick talking on the sidelines, but sometimes you need a player.

'Bruno, who you don't mind giving the ball away because he is the creative spark right, but he gave the ball away very cheaply probably about four times before half-time.

'I am sitting there looking around the team thinking who is going to be onto him? Who is going to be telling him? I would have been screaming.

And when Gary Lineker mentioned Maguire and Fernandes as leaders in the United dressing room, Ferdinand shut him down instantly.

Ferdinand responded: 'I don't think they are to be honest. If you are being brutal, I don't think any of them have shown any signs.

'Maybe Bruno - a new player coming in and taking responsibility in interviews, and on the pitch you can see he demands the ball and takes responsibility that way - but I don't see anybody who is going to ruffle feathers or pull someone aside and say "listen, you have given possession away cheaply the last three times, sort yourself out".

'Having no fans in the stadium is disgusting and we hate it but it has opened my eyes to see that there aren't many leaders playing football at the moment and Man United are suffering from that.'

Rio Ferdinand delivered a brutal assessment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad on Tuesday. Solskjaer's United side have come in for criticism after a sluggish start to the new campaign

Ferdinand's withering verdict of the United squad came after another club great in Paul Scholes questioned the side's leadership.

Scholes said: 'It is a very quiet team, it's such a quiet team. And when you have young players in your team like a Rashford and Martial - I know they have played a lot of games - but sometimes they still need coaching.

'They still need telling when they've got to run in the right areas. It is all about patience as well with this team. They have the quality to provide chances, we know that, but they do struggle.'

Default Re: Rio Gavin Ferdinand

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand names FIVE Liverpool players in his EA Sports FIFA Team of the Year - and there's NO place for Lionel Messi or Bruno Fernandes!

* Rio Ferdinand didn't name a single Man United players in his FIFA team of 2020
* Barcelona great Lionel Messi also failed to make the cut for Ferdinand's team
* The ex-United man's XI was mainly made up of Liverpool and Bayern players
* Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin De Bruyne were the exceptions

Rio Ferdinand has named five Liverpool stars in his EA Sports FIFA Team of the Year - but there were zero Manchester United players and no place for Lionel Messi either.

The former United and England ace went for a 4-3-3 system, which he believes is 'solid at the back' and would 'bang in goals' up front.

Despite his intense rivalry with Liverpool during his 12-year spell at United, the majority of Ferdinand's team is made up of players from the Premier League champions.

Alisson was the first of five Liverpool players selected with Ferdinand picking him between the sticks for his 'consistency'.

He was joined by team-mates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk in defence while Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos and Bayern Munich's highly-rated wing back Alphonso Davies completed the back four.

Ferdinand described his defence, which consisted of players who won the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Champions League last year, as full of 'pace, character, personality, strength and charisma'.

In the middle of the park, Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne was Ferdinand's first choice with the ex-United man labelling the Belgian star the 'best midfielder in the Premier League'.

Alongside him was Liverpool's Thiago and Bayern's Joshua Kimmich, who were preferred to United's driving force Fernandes.

The Portuguese midfielder has been in stunning form ever since joining United in a £68million deal last January but Ferdinand opted to leave him out.

There were some obvious choices up front with goal machine Robert Lewandowski - who won the UEFA Men's Player of the Year and the Best FIFA Men's player for 2020 - picked to lead the line for his star-studded XI.

Pitch camp: Here's how Ferdinand's dream FIFA XI would line up

It would have been a crime had Ferdinand gone with anyone else up top considering no player in Europe's top leagues scored more than Lewndowski in 2020 (40).

On the left wing was Cristiano Ronaldo, who is still defying his age by continuing to score at a ridiculous rate even at 35 with 19 goals from 17 games so far this season and now an astonishing 759 across his career - the joint highest in history.

There was surprisingly no place for Barcelona legend Messi despite Ferdinand previously saying that he should be considered a greater talent than Ronaldo because of his all-round game.

Messi endured a tough campaign last term as Barcelona failed to win any silverware but enjoyed success on a personal level, still managing to post impressive numbers in the score and assist columns, though it was not enough to convince Ferdinand to include him.

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane was chosen to play in the right-forward position to round off Ferdinand's dream XI, meaning no players from his former club made the cut despite their inspired form in recent months which has put them on the cusp of going top of the Premier League table.

'We have choked, it's simple as that': Rio Ferdinand rules Manchester United out of the title race after 'criminal' defending caused last-gasp draw against Everton

* Rio Ferdinand says United are out of the title race after 'choking' against Everton
* Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a 95th minute equaliser for Everton on Saturday
* Ferdinand believe Man United are guilty of 'tripping themselves up all the time'
* He says Man United need to 'change their habits and their lack of consistency'

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United are out of the title race after 'choking' against Everton on Saturday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side missed the chance to go level on points with Manchester City – who still have a game in hand – after Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a 95th minute equaliser for the Toffees.

Ferdinand felt disappointed with United's performance and said they are guilty of 'tripping themselves up all the time'.

United’s 3-3 draw with Everton has seen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men fall five points behind Manchester City.

Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United are out of the title race after 'choking' against Everton. Manchester United drew 3-3 with Carlo Ancelotti's Everton side on Saturday

It also marks another game in which United have failed to walk away with three points.

United’s title hopes are beginning to diminish as they have won just two of their last six league games – with their biggest upset coming against bottom-placed Sheffield United.

Speaking of United's fall from grace, Ferdinand told FIVE: 'You can't defend it. At the end of the day Man United were sitting pretty at the top of the league.

'We didn't come into this season expecting to be title challengers. We were too far behind Liverpool (last season). You can't expect to have a turnaround that big to win the league, it's impossible.

'But I'm like all the other fans. You see the league table, you look at the results, you get excited. When you put yourself in that position, Man United have to strike. You're there now and there's an opportunity.

'When there's an opportunity you've got to go. The problem is we've let this opportunity slip through our hands. You can see Man City with their experience, they've smelt blood, they've put their heads down, they've gone.

'But United have stuttered, we've got the choke going, haven't got it quite working properly. We have choked, it's simple as that. I'd put us out of the title challenge unless we go on a run and we change our habits and our lack of consistency.

The draw puts Man United five points behind Manchester City - who have a game in hand. Ferdinand criticised Harry Maguire (left) for not leading the United team from the back

'But I haven't seen enough to suggest we can go on a ten, 15-game winning streak. We're tripping ourselves up all the time. It's top four, we'll finish second or third.'

Ferdinand also criticised United's defensive structure for Everton's equaliser, adding: 'I see Harry Maguire, you've got to lead that team from the back and make sure (mistakes) don't happen.

'I was fuming before the free-kick. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has to understand his game management at this time of the game.

'Passing the ball inside, loose like that, to be cut out, is criminal. I would have been going nuts in that changing room, screaming.'

'The timing of it doesn't make sense... this is a mad move at a mad time': Rio Ferdinand reacts to Jose Mourinho's surprise Spurs sacking ahead of Carabao Cup final and believes there will be 'more fallout' to come following his exit

* Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Tottenham days before the Carabao Cup final
* He leaves Spurs seventh in the Premier League - five points off fourth place
* Rio Ferdinand said he expected Jose Mourinho to get the sack in the summer
* However, he is surprised at the timing that the club have decided to part ways

Rio Ferdinand says he's surprised at the timing of Jose Mourinho's sacking, days before Tottenham play out the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

Mourinho, 58, replaced Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019 but has now been dismissed after a dismal Premier League campaign and failure in the Europa League.

It means that that the Portuguese manager doesn't get a chance to help Tottenham win their first trophy since 2008.

Ferdinand on his Vibe with Five podcast, said he expected Mourinho to be sacked in the summer and feels there will be a 'fallout' from the club's decision.

He said: 'Well I am (surprised) because the Carabao Cup final is at the weekend, the timing of it. If you had to tell me to bet everything I've got that he gets sacked in the summer, I say yes he does, if they finish outside the top four especially.

'But the timing of it now doesn't make sense. There's going to be more fallout from this as it's not normal for a manager to be sacked at this point a week before a cup final.

'Has he disagreed with the European Super League and Tottenham being a part of it? I don't know. There could be so many different reasons as to why but Mourinho never does things conventionally.

Jose Mourinho was sacked by Tottenham on Monday after a dismal Premier League campaign. Rio Ferdinand has claimed that he was surprised by the timing of Tottenham's decision. It means Mourinho misses out on Tottenham's Carabao Cup final against Manchester City

'He's normally the leader in things, he tries to be first at a lot of things. This is a mad move at a mad time. I just need to wait and hear more.'

Tottenham had made a bright start to the season under Mourinho and were top of the table back in November.

However their form has been patchy ever since and Spurs currently sit seventh in the league - five points off the Champions League places with six games left to play.

There will be question of Tottenham's decision to sack Mourinho six days before the Carabao Cup final.

Stephen Howson who also presents the show, said it was a 'wild move' and felt that Mourinho could have got a result against Manchester City to clinch the trophy.

Ferdinand though strongly disagreed with his co-presenter, saying he wouldn't have backed Mourinho to beat Pep Guardiola's side with that team.

'This is Manchester City's game all day long. Mourinho, with the Chelsea team of yesteryear he had in his first spell, the Real Madrid and Inter Milan teams he had. I would back him with them teams.

'Mourinho on any given day in one final I'm backing Mourinho against anyone. With this Spurs team where are the foundations that you are going to be backing him?

'He's got a man like Eric Dier being brought in from the wilderness plays here plays there, Aurier plays here plays there. Lloris, good, bad up and down.

'You've got Kane and Son who are consistent. But they're not a consistent team where I'd bank on those boys to pull out a big boy performance. It's not just him it's on the players too.'

Sir Alex Ferguson was so desperate to sign Karim Benzema 'Lyon officials had to PULL him away in the tunnel', reveals Rio Ferdinand - before French star later snubbed Manchester United for Real Madrid

* Karim Benzema has been Real Madrid's main man for just under 12 seasons
* Rio Ferdinand claimed Sir Alex Ferguson pursued the Frenchman back in 2008
* Benzema first caught Ferguson's eye by scoring against Man United that year
* Ferguson allegedly had to be pulled away by Lyon officials after the match
* Benzema joined Real Madrid in 2009 - and United signed Michael Owen instead

Rio Ferdinand claims Sir Alex Ferguson was desperate to sign Karim Benzema for Manchester United before he joined Real Madrid.

The French striker has been a regular option for the LaLiga giants since moving from Lyon in 2009, scoring 227 goals in 12 seasons and guiding Los Blancos to 18 major trophies.

Benzema first caught Ferguson's eye when he scored for Lyon in the 2007-08 Champions League last-16 tie against United, with Ferdinand claiming the Scot had to be dragged away from the striker by the French club's officials.

Rio Ferdinand claimed Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Karim Benzema before he joined Real Madrid. Benzema first caught the ex-Manchester United boss' eyes by scoring against the club in 2008

Speaking about facing Benzema for United back in 2008, Ferdinand told BT Sport: 'The first time I played against him, Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to sign him.

'He was speaking to him in the tunnel after the game and Lyon officials had to pull him away. His movement that day was brilliant.'

Benzema ended up moving to Madrid over a year later in a £30million move, thereby snubbing a move to Ferguson's side who had just won the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final.

Ferdinand claimed Ferguson wanted had to be dragged away from Benzema after the match. Ferguson was left disappointed come the summer of 2009 when Benzema moved to Spain. United then snapped up Michael Owen on a free transfer that summer after Benzema's snub

Michael Owen, who was United's only striker signing in the summer of 2009, revealed that Benzema rejecting the Red Devils was the only reason he made the switch to Old Trafford on a free transfer from Newcastle.

The former United striker claimed: 'I only came to United because he chose Real Madrid instead of United. The first time I got a call from Sir Alex Ferguson, he said "We want to sign Benzema, if we don't get him... (we're getting you.)'

The 34-year-old is having another top season at the Spanish giants, with 28 goals in all competitions this season going into Wednesday night's Champions League semi-final second-leg with Chelsea.

Michael Owen admitted that Benzema is currently benefiting from Cristiano Ronaldo no longer being part of the Real Madrid squad.

The Portuguese forward joined Juventus in a £100million move in the summer of 2018 and Benzema has 85 goals in 142 matches since then.

Owen claimed: 'He's in great form. Who isn't going to be in Cristiano Ronaldo's shadow when he's at your club?

'He has a variety of finishes with either foot. He's brilliant in the air, he places or goes for power. He can link up as well.

'He's got power when he needs it, he's brilliant in the air and when he sees an opportunity, he knows his team-mate alongside him but goes I'm the centre-forward - I'm the selfish one.'

Joe Cole, meanwhile, claims Benzema has been the hottest striker in the world in recent years, apart from his former Real Madrid team-mate Ronaldo.

The former Chelsea midfielder added: 'I played against him many times and in the last 10, 15 years - apart from Ronaldo - he's been the most dangerous striker.'
