UNITED BRIEFING: MATIC'S TROPHY HUNGER

Nemanja Matic is desperate to get hold of his first trophy as a Manchester United player after the Reds reached the Europa League final on Thursday night.

The Serbian midfielder came on as a second-half substitute to steady the ship as we looked to seal our place in the Europa League final at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday evening. Against Roma, the Reds lost 3-2 in a highly entertaining semi-final return leg but went through 8-5 on aggregate following our 6-2 win at Old Trafford in the first meeting with Giallorossi.

“I think it's very important to play the final, because when you play for Manchester United you always have to compete for trophies,” Matic emphasised in his post-match interview for club media, before casting an eye towards the final.

“We know we can expect a very hard game, Villarreal is a great team with a great manager, so we have to be focused from the first until the last minute and we have to show personality and character in that game. It's not enough just to play the final, you have to bring the trophy back to Old Trafford, so we're going to do our best.”

Matic, who joined United from Chelsea in the summer of 2017, just after we won the Europa League for the first time, is yet to lift silverware with the Reds and is eager to get his hands on a winner's medal as soon as possible.

“I'm very desperate to finally have a trophy with Manchester United,” the midfield powerhouse told Stewart Gardner.

“I didn't expect that I would have to wait for that long but now we have an opportunity to win one. It's not going to be easy, as I said, we have to be focused but I hope at the end of that game we will be happy and I hope I will finally touch a trophy.”

In the Italian capital, David De Gea and Edinson Cavani were the outstanding performers for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, with our goalkeeper pulling off one stunning save after another and our forward netting a brace.

“David was amazing,” said Nemanja.

“I think he saved us five or six times in this game. He showed class, personality, character. Edinson also. I'm happy that we have big players with big personalities in our squad. The kids can learn from them, so I'm happy for them also. But I was not surprised because we know that they are world-class players.”

Now, following the postponement of our match against Liverpool, United have four games in nine days coming up, starting with a trip to Villa Park to face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.

“As you know, the schedule will be hard,” the 32-year-old said.

“Every two or three days there will be a game but we cannot do anything [about it]. We have to be focused, we have to be ready to make a quick recovery. We have to be professional for 20 more days. When you play for Manchester United, the last few months are always busy, so we'll be ready I think.”

MATIC: LET’S BUILD MOMENTUM

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is eager to finish the year strongly, with no fewer than 11 games coming up for the Reds before the end of the year.

During the recent international break, the Serbian powerhouse spent time at Carrington, preparing for a hectic schedule that finishes off 2021.

The Reds have nine Premier League games and two Champions League fixtures to negotiate between now and 30 December, so Matic has made sure to spend the pause from club football wisely.

"Yeah it’s always important to use the international break to rest, to recover the body and to be ready for the next challenges," Matic said in an exclusive interview with club media.

"As you know, the Premier League is very hard, plus we have Champions League, FA Cup [in January], so it’s a very tough schedule for us in the next couple of months so I rest very well and then I’m fresh and motivated to continue."

The Serbian midfielder says the team is very motivated to finish the year on a high.

"Yeah it’s very important to build momentum, game by game, especially now because Christmas is coming, Boxing Day as you know is always busy for us. Lot of games so we have to be ready for that."

First up in that busy period is the trip to Vicarage Road to face Watford on Saturday and our no.31 is looking forward to the challenge.

He wants to build on the solid away performance against Tottenham Hotspur - United won 3-0 in north London in our last away match in the Premier League.

"I hope so. We have a very difficult match against Watford then after that with Villarreal away and then Chelsea. Very busy and it’s important to start the week with a win."

Although it is the players on the pitch kicking the ball, the Serbian is keen to emphasise the fans’ importance for United, especially in busy periods where legs and heads can get tired.

"Very important," Matic said about our supporters' influence.

"When we play without supporters it was not the same. Playing at Old Trafford without our fans is not the same. Supporters give us more motivation, more energy so now the situation is different. Supporters are back and now we are very excited that they came and we want to say thank you for the great support."

Nemanja Matic tells Manchester United fans 'we're doing our BEST' despite record low Premier League points total - and admits success is 'going to take some time' as he gets set for final United game at Crystal Palace

* Nemanja Matic has urged Manchester United fans to keep supporting the team
* The Red Devils will achieve their record lowest Premier League points total ever
* But departing Serbian midfielder Matic insisted the players are 'doing their best'
* The 33-year-old is set to leave Old Trafford this summer when his deal expires

Nemanja Matic has urged Manchester United fans to keep supporting the team despite record underperformance on the pitch.

Assuming they beat Crystal Palace on the final day of the Premier League season, the Red Devils will secure a total of just 61 points - three less than their previous lowest total of 64 in 2013-14.

But Matic insisted the players are 'doing their best' and admitted success is a long way down the road for United.

He said: 'We've had a couple of difficult seasons but I just want the fans to know, at the training ground, we're doing our best. United will come back, for sure. It's going to take some time but United will be back. Keep supporting the team. Stay together.

Nemanja Matic has urged Man United fans to keep supporting the team despite their struggles. The Red Devils will achieve their record lowest ever Premier League points total this season. Serbian midfielder Matic, 33, who will leave the club as a free agent when his contract expires this summer, also insisted it is 'going to take some time' for the club to enjoy success in future

'I think the fans recognise what I'm doing on the pitch. Also, off the pitch, I try to be an example... I know what this badge means to our supporters, so you need to be an example not only on the pitch.

'United has some fantastic people that are working for the club. They are behind the cameras but they are very important for the team. They really like the club and that's good.

'I'm really happy that I had the opportunity to work with them and, for sure, they will be my friends forever.'

The Serbian midfielder, 33, is set to leave Old Trafford as a free agent at the end of his contract this summer.

He has made 189 appearances in all competitions for the club since joining from Chelsea for £40million in July 2017, scoring four goals.

Nemanja Matic 'is set to sign for Serie A side Roma after Manchester United release - with the Serbian poised to reunite with Jose Mourinho for the third time'

* Nemanja Matic is reportedly set to join Jose Mourinho's Roma on a free transfer
* Mourinho signed the Serbian when he was at Chelsea and Manchester United
* The central midfielder left Old Trafford when his contract expired this summer

Nemanja Matic is poised to join Jose Mourinho's Roma on a free transfer after leaving Manchester United, according to reports in Italy.

The central midfielder, 33, departed Old Trafford when his contract expired this summer.

And as stated by football journalists Gianluca Di Marzio and Fabrizio Romano, the expierenced Serbian is shortly set to confirm his move to the Italian side.

Matic spent five years with the Red Devils after signing for the club from Chelsea for £40m in July 2017, making 189 appearances in all competitions and scoring four goals.

Nemanja Matic is reportedly set to sign for Roma after leaving Manchester United. The Serbian midfielder could link up with Roma boss Jose Mourinho (right) for the third time. The Portuguese previously signed the 33-year-old while at Chelsea and Manchester United

Mourinho, who signed him for United and the Blues before that, is believed to have explicitly requested the signing.

The Portuguese will therefore link up with the 48-cap former international if the transfer goes through.

It is reported Roma chief Tiago Pinto, formerly of Portuguese side Benfica, like Matic, led the chase for the player.

The club are thought to be offering Matic a one-year deal, with an option for a second.

Romano claims the Serie A side have signed Benfica goalkeeper Mile Svilar as well, also on a free transfer.

Erik ten Hag tried to encourage 'Nemanja Matic to extend his contract at Manchester United' as he felt the Serbian was a 'good influence in the dressing room' amid concerns over Harry Maguire's leadership

* Erik ten Hag tried to encourage Nemanja Matic to extend his contract at United

* Matic revealed in April that he would be leaving United at the end of the season
* Matic decided to join Roma despite Ten Hag's best efforts to keep hold of him

Erik ten Hag reportedly tried to encourage Nemanja Matic to extend his contract at Manchester United as he thought the Serbian was a 'good influence in the dressing room'.

Matic - who revealed in April that he would be leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season - reunited with former boss Jose Mourinho for a third time by signing for Roma last month.

The 33-year-old has signed for Roma on a one-year contract that runs until 30 June 2023 after United agree to his exit. However, reports have since stated that Ten Hag tried to keep hold of the midfielder.

Manchester United's captain Harry Maguire has come under fire for his performances on the pitch and his decision-making off it.

Erik ten Hag reportedly tried to encourage Nemanja Matic to extend his contract at United. The United boss thought the Serbian was a 'good influence in the dressing room'

Therefore, the current leadership dynamic at United has been a topic over conversation over the last few months.

According to The Athletic, Ten Hag tried to encourage Matic to extend his contract at Manchester United as he felt he had a commanding but positive presence in the changing room.

However, Matic - who spent five years at United after joining from Chelsea - decided to part ways with the club and join Roma instead.

He made over 100 Premier League appearances during his spell at Old Trafford after arriving from Chelsea for £40million in 2017, but started only 16 times last season.

Therefore, the 33-year-old wanted to move to a top-flight club where he would gain more first-team minutes.

Ten Hag will continue to access the leadership dynamic at Manchester United amid Maguire's ongoing scrutiny following a disappointing 2021-2022 campaign.

Ten Hag plans to keep him as one of his central defenders alongside Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof but could strip him of his captaincy following his latest gaffe.

Maguire liked an Instagram post about Cristiano Ronaldo's anger at Manchester United salary cuts - before quickly backtracking and insisting it was done in error.

Fans slammed Maguire and questioned his captain's credentials after the incident, in which he reacted to a post about United's reported 25 per cent pay cuts after missing out on next season's Champions League.

Maguire was quick to pour water on the outrage on Wednesday afternoon, admitting to the BBC that he did like the photo - but immediately removed it because he had clicked in error.

As a result, Ten Hag will think carefully about whether he allows Maguire to continue as the club captain next season.

Nemanja Matic labels trolling of England centre-back Harry Maguire a 'disaster' with the Serbian's former team-mate being booed by his own fans and suffering from abuse on social media

* Online abuse targeted towards Harry Maguire is a 'disaster', says Nemanja Matic
* The England and Manchester United star has been the subject of trolling online
* He lost his place in Erik ten Hag's side but remains in Gareth Southgate's favour
* Matic, 34, described the internet trolls as people 'who don't have their own lives'

Nemanja Matic has described the trolling of England and Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire as a 'disaster'.

The Roma midfielder insisted that people 'who don't have their own lives' are targeting his former team-mate on social media.

Maguire, who has lost his place in defence under Erik ten Hag this season, was still called up by Gareth Southgate and featured in England's 1-0 defeat to Italy on Friday.

Some Three Lions fans booed the £80million Red Devils star against Ivory Coast in March and some have proceeded to abuse him on social media.

Matic has since hit out at the perpetrators, having previously spent three seasons at Old Trafford with the centre-half.

'What people are doing to him, it is a disaster,' Matic told The Times. 'Everything has to have limits and some of these people writing on social media, they don't have their own lives, so they just have to write bad things about someone else.'

Roma midfielder Nemanja Matic believes the trolling of England's Harry Maguire is a 'disaster'. The centre-back played in England's 1-0 defeat by Italy despite losing his place for Man United. The ex-Red Devils star insisted that the people trolling Maguire 'don't have their own lives'. Manchester United have won four straight matches in the league since dropping the defender

Maguire featured during Manchester United's opening two defeats of the season against Brighton and Brentford, subsequently losing his place to defensive pairing Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

Ten Hag's side have since carved out four successive league victories without the 29-year-old in the starting line-up, triumphing against Liverpool, Southampton, Leicester and Arsenal to climb to fifth in the division.

Despite receiving a glut of online abuse from a selection of supporters, Maguire told talkSPORT: 'I am all good, ready to play, I feel fit and fresh.

'On my form, I don't know what has been said, I don't really read about it. I came off the back of three positive games with England in the summer, and a good pre-season. I felt really good.

'Obviously, the manager decided to leave me out for a game, and the team have been winning since.

'I am working hard on the training pitch to make sure I am ready for when my opportunity comes. That is all that I can do to try and help the team. I am not concentrating on anybody else and what people are saying.'
