Wayne Rooney will NOT play for Derby County on Saturday against Wycombe Wanderers to focus solely on managing instead... despite the Rams being rock bottom of Championship

* Wayne Rooney will not take to the pitch for Derby County to manage instead
* The Rams have a hugely important relegation tie against Wycombe Wanderer
* Rooney, 35, has become the lead figure among Derby's four interim coaches

Wayne Rooney is to consign himself to the sidelines for Derby County on Saturday as he focuses solely on the task of managing for the first time in the club's crucial bottom of the Championship six-pointer against Wycombe Wanderers.

Having been named a member of the four-person coaching group taking interim charge of the Rams since Phillip Cocu's sacking earlier this month, Rooney has become its lead figure and will not play in the upcoming fixture to take on the manager role.

The decision was reportedly taken following discussions on Thursday after Derby's drab 3-0 loss to Middlesbrough the night before.

Wayne Rooney will not be on the pitch in Derby County's match against Wycombe Wanderers

The defeat leaves Derby rock bottom of the Championship, with just one win from 13 matches.

After the match, Liam Rosenior, who alongside Rooney, Justin Walker and Shay Given makes up Derby's coaching group, said the squad is young but 'need to learn very, very quickly what it takes to win games in the Championship'.

'Before you speak about tactics or playing style, you need to compete, you need to win headers, you need to win second balls, you need to track runners.

'I just feel there is a real lack of confidence at the moment and it is something we are going to have really affect now - it has to change now.'

Rooney is one of four coaches taking interim charge at Derby after Phillip Cocu was sacked. Rooney has scored just one goal in 10 league appearances for rock-bottom Derby this season. Liam Rosenior said Derby have to 'learn very, very quickly' to survive in the Championship

Despite having the former Manchester United striker, who is England's record goalscorer, Derby have only managed a woeful five goals so far this campaign.

Rooney himself has only bagged one of those in 10 league appearances, although he has been playing in a more withdrawn role for the Rams rather than reprising his former centre forward days.

Both Derby and Wycombe, who sit just two places above them in the relegation zone, are two of the bookies' favourites to be relegated from the Championship this season.

Rosenior added: 'This has to be a watershed moment. Not just for this season, but for this football club. We need to move things forward. To do that in the Championship, you have to do the basics.'

Wayne Rooney reveals he is taking advice from Sir Alex Ferguson AND David Moyes as he tries to impress as Derby County's interim boss, with ex-England team-mate John Terry also keen on the job

* Wayne Rooney has a big job on his hands as interim manager of Derby County
* Derby are currently bottom of the Championship, five points adrift of safety
* Rooney is seeking his first victory as Derby boss against Millwall on Saturday
* He has turned to his ex-managers Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes for advice
* Rooney faces competition for the permanent job at Derby from John Terry

Wayne Rooney has revealed he has spoken to Sir Alex Ferguson for advice as he takes his first steps as a manager with Derby.

The former England captain, who faces competition for the permanent job from John Terry, is in charge of Derby's interim coaching team while the club await the proposed £60million takeover by Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan and will seek to claim his first win as a boss at Millwall on Saturday.

Derby are desperate for results as they are bottom of the Championship, five points adrift of safety.

Wayne Rooney is enjoying his first taste of management as Derby County's interim boss. The former striker has revealed he has chatted to Sir Alex Ferguson since taking over at Derby

Rooney has made it clear that he wants the job full-time and has spoken to both Sir Alex and West Ham boss David Moyes, his manager when he broke through at Everton as a 16-year-old, for guidance.

Rooney said: 'I spoke to Sir Alex and David Moyes, as well as a few different people. It was nice to have the chance to catch up on certain things.

'It wasn't particularly about how the team was playing or how we should set up. It was more of a general chat.

'If I can speak to Sir Alex Ferguson again I would be a bit naive not to, and it was great for David Moyes to give me a call and offer his help.'

Rooney is also relishing the prospect of being targeted by the home crowd as Derby prepare to play in front of fans for the first time since last spring at Millwall.

Rooney faces competition for the Derby job from former England team-mate John Terry

With London in Tier 2, up to 2,000 fans will be permitted on Saturday at The Den, a ground known for its fiery atmosphere.

Rooney added: 'I am looking forward to it. It's great when fans are in and there is banter going on. Unfortunately there won't be any away fans there.

'I'm sure the players and I will hear everything that is being said and I expect I will get a bit of stick. I was really looking forward to playing at Millwall last season with fans there, but it was during Project Restart in the end and there were no fans in.

'Whether it's watching the game on TV or being there live, fans are a big part of this game and the quicker we can get them back in and start to get more fans at games, the better it will be.'

Rooney will be hoping his chat with Ferguson will pay off when Derby visit Millwall on Saturday.

Rooney has also spoken to David Moyes, his manager when he broke through at Everton

There is no one better for Rooney to take advice from during his early managerial days than legendary United boss Ferguson.

During Rooney's time with Ferguson at Old Trafford, the former striker won five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

However, Rooney's plans to take over at Derby on a permanent basis are under threat from his former England team-mate and ex-Chelsea captain Terry.

The Rams are searching for a new manager after sacking Phillip Cocu in November with Terry one of the front-runners alongside current interim boss Rooney.

Terry is a real contender for the Derby job with key figures among the club's prospective new owners impressed by the former England and Chelsea skipper.

Rooney is seeking his first victory as interim Derby manager when they travel to Millwall

Terry has never been a No 1, but there are those close to Sheikh Khaled who believe Terry would be able to revive Derby's fortunes.

The 39-year-old is part of Dean Smith's coaching staff at Aston Villa but he is believed to be keen to move into management.

If Terry beats Rooney to the permanent job at Pride Park, it has been reported that he would look to make former Chelsea and England team-mate Ashley Cole part of his management team.

The former left back, who finished his career with a short spell at Derby in 2019, is currently an academy coach at Chelsea and also works as a TV pundit, but according to the Mirror Terry reportedly thinks he can make the coaching step-up to senior football.

Like father, like son! Wayne Rooney's oldest child, Kai, signs for Manchester United as former Red Devils and England striker takes the role of proud dad as he poses with wife Coleen and his 11-year-old footballing prodigy

* Wayne Rooney posted a picture of his son, Kai, signing for Manchester United
* Rooney and his wife Coleen joined Kai as he put pen to paper on his deal
* Rooney revealed his pride in Kai joining for his former club on Thursday
* Rooney is United's all-time leading scorer with an incredible 253 goals
* The former England star enjoyed an incredible 13 years at Old Trafford
* Rooney won five Premier League titles, one Champions League, and much more

Wayne Rooney's son Kai has followed in his father's footsteps by signing for Manchester United's academy.

United's record goalscorer posted a picture on social media of the 11-year-old, the oldest of Rooney's four sons, signing a contract at his dad's former club.

Rooney accompanied the image with the caption: 'Proud day. Kai signing for @manchesterunited. Keep up the hard work son.'

Rooney's 11-year-old son puts pen to paper on his deal in what is a proud day for the family

Rooney, 38 years of age and now in interim charge of Derby, joined United from Everton in 2004.

The former England striker had a glittering 13-year career at Old Trafford, scoring 253 times in 559 appearances and breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's long-standing goal record in January 2017.

Coleen Rooney wrote on Instagram: 'Special night..... congratulations Kai. I love you and I am so proud of you. Keep trying your best.'

During his remarkable career at Old Trafford, Rooney won five Premier League titles, three League Cups, one FA Cup, one Europa League and one Champions League.

Rooney left for boyhood club Everton in 2017 before joining MLS outfit DC United prior to moving to Derby.

The former England and United captain is still adored by the United faithful thanks to his incredible service to the club during their glory years under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rooney made his debut for United back in September 2004 against Fenerbahce in the Champions League after joining from Everton in a £27million deal, and he settled in straight away at Old Trafford.

Rooney scored a hat-trick and laid on an assist as United thrashed the Turkish outfit 6-2.

Fast forward 13 years and he walked out arguably United's greatest ever player during their era of dominance under Ferguson.

Rooney also lifted the Champions League with the Red Devils in Moscow back in 2008

Rooney will now be hoping his son, Kai - born in November 2009 - can enjoy a strong start to life in United's academy.

The 35-year-old will be following his oldest son every step of the way as he begins his new chapter with United.

Meanwhile, Rooney himself is looking to land the Derby job on a permanent basis after taking caretaker charge of the relegation-threatened Championship club.

The former England captain has impressed since taking his first steps in management, and has guided Derby to a six-game unbeaten run during his time in the hotseat.

And after overseeing an upturn in performances, Rooney has won the support of Derby's players to become the club's full-time boss after impressing them.

Yet until the proposed £60million takeover by Sheik Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan – a cousin of Manchester City owner Sheik Mansour – is completed, Derby are unlikely to make a permanent appointment.

Rooney has made no secret of his desire to land the post and he has made a positive impact on the squad since taking charge.

New Derby boss Wayne Rooney fears the club's January targets will lose interest in a move to Pride Park if their takeover is not completed soon as the cash-strapped Rams struggle under transfer embargo

* Derventio Holdings has proposed a £60m buyout of Championship club Derby
* Wayne Rooney fears his targets will not sign if the sale is not completed soon
* Derby are currently sitting one place above the Championship's relegation zone

Wayne Rooney fears Derby's January targets will end up elsewhere if the sale of the club is not completed imminently.

Derby are currently operating under a transfer embargo after failing to pay players and staff last month, and the cash flow problems are not being helped by the delay in the proposed £60million takeover by Sheikh Khaled's Derventio Holdings.

Asked if the embargo had scuppered potential transfer deals, after he had sealed his first win since being appointed as permanent manager against Bournemouth on Tuesday, Rooney replied: 'Not scuppered at the minute, but the longer it goes on I am sure there are other teams that will be sniffing around players.

'I know what players are like. If you don't get it done when they want it done, there will be other options there.

Wayne Rooney fears Derby's targets will not sign if the sale of the club is not completed soon. Derby are operating under a transfer embargo after failing to pay players and staff last month. Relegation-threatened Derby are one place above the Championship's relegation zone

'It is not ideal, of course, but that is where we are at and we have to keep working in the background.'

Relegation-threatened Derby are one place above the Championship's drop zone but the three clubs below them in the table all have games in hand.

Sportsmail reported on Tuesday that contingency plans were being discussed by the Pride Park hierarchy amid fears the Dubai-based group's deal - approved by the EFL in November - is on the verge of collapse.

So would such an eventuality cause Rooney, 35, to re-think his position as manager?

'No, not at all,' said the former England captain.

'We need players in, whether that's players to start or players to help the squad but if we weren't to get them, I believe in my qualities to get the best out of the players I've got.'

Wayne Rooney backs Manchester United to win the Premier League title for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson's final season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men went two points clear after Fulham victory

* Manchester United currently lead the Premier League table by two points
* However, noisy neighbours Manchester City sit in second with a game in hand
* Wayne Rooney believes the Red Devils are capable of lifting the title in May
* United have not won the league since 2013 - when Rooney was still a player

Wayne Rooney has backed Manchester United to win the Premier League title this season.

The club’s record goalscorer won the trophy five times during his 13-year spell at Old Trafford and believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can become the first manager since Sir Alex Ferguson to claim the domestic crown.

United last took the title in 2013, Ferguson’s final season. Since then David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have failed to emulate the Scot but Solskjaer has guided them to the top of the table, where they are two points clear of Manchester City.

Wayne Rooney believes Man United are capable of winning this season's Premier League. The Red Devils currently top the table after Wednesday night's 2-1 victory over Fulham

‘It’s the first time in a few years where you can see Manchester United feel they can win this league and I believe they can,’ said Rooney, who was made permanent boss of Championship strugglers Derby last week.

‘Six weeks ago I said to the coaches in the office here that I felt United would win the league - I still feel that today. When I watch them they excite me.

‘Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani, with their winning mentalities, have helped massively, and Paul Pogba will have a big part to play.

United have not won the title since 2013 when Rooney (middle) was still a player at Old Trafford

‘The players with winning mentalities will relieve a bit of the pressure on Paul so he can show his quality on the pitch.

‘They’ve got very talented players and they have a very good game plan going into games. I thought they deserved to beat Liverpool at Anfield recently.

‘With a little bit more care with the final pass, Marcus Rashford would have been clean through two or three times.

Wayne Rooney insists he is at Derby 'for the long term' and holds 'hope' he can steer them to Premier League promotion despite troubled club walking away from takeover talks

* Derby scrapped takeover talks with the Bin Zayed Group after agreeing a sale
* With the deal still not complete months on, the Championship club walked away
* Wayne Rooney is adamant the collapsed talks will not affect his long-term future
* The Derby boss insisted he is not at the club to 'mess around' and has high aims

Wayne Rooney insists he is at Derby for the long haul after the troubled Championship club scrapped takeover talks this week.

Last November chairman Mel Morris agreed to sell the Rams to Bin Zayed Group for £60million but with the deal still not complete four months later, Derby decided to walk away.

Rooney, who has steered Derby out of the bottom three since replacing Phillip Cocu last November, would not be drawn on the Rams’ financial position but assured fans it would not affect his future, after he agreed a two-and-a-half year contract in January after a successful spell as interim boss.

Wayne Rooney insisted he is at Derby for the long haul after the club scrapped takeover talks

‘I am here for the long term,’ said England’s record goalscorer. ‘I am not here to mess around or because an ownership deal does or doesn’t go through. In my time here I hope we can get the club to the Premier League.

‘I take the job very seriously and I’m grateful for Derby putting their trust in me. I am confident my way of managing will help the club so I am here to manage the club for a long time.

‘It wasn’t a short-term fix or dependent on a takeover. I signed a two-and-a-half-year deal and that’s what I’m looking forward to doing.’

Boss Rooney is focused on keeping Derby up despite the club's uncertain financial situation. Mel Morris had agreed to sell the club to Bin Zayed group but walked away four months later

Rooney revealed he had held talks with the club hierarchy since takeover talks collapsed. Derby are now in discussions with at least one other party.

The former Manchester United star added: ‘It is important for me to know these things but questions about the takeover are for Mel Morris directly.

‘I’m aware of exactly what the situation is with the club but these are questions which I’m sure, at the right time, Mr Morris will keep you fully informed on.’

Wayne Rooney blasts 'crazy' sacking of his former boss Jose Mourinho and admits it is 'strange timing' just six days before Tottenham's Carabao Cup final showdown with Manchester City

* Wayne Rooney has criticised Tottenham for sacking manager Jose Mourinho
* Rooney says Tottenham could have waited until after the Carabao Cup final
* Derby boss Rooney played under Mourinho when he was at Manchester United

Wayne Rooney has branded Tottenham's decision to sack his old manager Jose Mourinho as 'crazy'.

Spurs have fired their Portuguese coach just six days before they meet Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, and Rooney believes there is no-one better to outwit Pep Guardiola than Mourinho.

The Derby County boss, who worked under Mourinho at Manchester United, warned that Spurs chief Daniel Levy is taking a huge gamble.

'I think it's crazy doing it before a cup final,' said Rooney. 'It's strange timing anyway. Surely they could have waited until after the cup final if that's the direction they wanted to go in.

Wayne Rooney says that it's 'crazy' that Tottenham have sacked manager Jose Mourinho. Rooney played under Mourinho at Manchester United and is confident he will bounce back

'Mourinho is a manager who loves winning trophies, that's quite clear to see. He's won a lot of trophies throughout his career.

'If there was one manager to set up a team to play against Man City in a cup final it's Jose Mourinho. Tottenham haven't had the best of seasons so from that point of view so it's crazy and a massive risk.

'I'm sure Daniel Levy could have waited until the day after the game, that would have made more sense if they wanted to get rid of Mourinho.'

Rooney believes Mourinho's departure will be met with mixed emotions among the Tottenham players, but is sure there will be no shortage of clubs willing to employ the 58-year-old.

'It depends on the players,' he added. 'I've been there myself. Some players will get encouragement from the decision and some players will be upset. It's purely down to each player individually.

'What happens a lot of times when a manager gets sacked and someone comes in, and a lot of times you get a good reaction.

Rooney says Spurs 'could have waited' until after the Carabao Cup final before deciding

'Jose is a fantastic manager. One of the best managers the game has seen. Unfortunately his time has come to an end at Tottenham but I'm sure he'll bounce back and I'm sure there will be a lot of top clubs out there looking to bring him in.

'It's purely up to him if he wants to come into another club in England, I'm sure there are a lot of clubs around the world who would love to have him..'

Rooney played under Mourinho at United in the 2016-17 season, during which he won the Europa League and the League Cup.

Having been appointed as Tottenham boss in November 2019, Mourinho oversaw a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League last season, while he leaves with the club currently in seventh place.

Tottenham were knocked out of the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb in dramatic circumstances, while they were also beaten by Everton in the FA Cup.

Although they face Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday, Tottenham's focus is mainly on the Carabao Cup final, when they will have the opportunity to win their first trophy since 2008.

This is the first time as a manager in English football that Mourinho has left a club without having won a trophy.

It will be intriguing to see what the 58-year-old's next move will be as he looks to show that he can still be a successful manager at the highest level.

RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann and Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers have both been linked with the Tottenham job.

yup...seharusnya menunggu setelah final Carabou Cup, siapa tau Spurs juara kan, Mou layak dipertahankan dan diberi waktu. asal Kane bertahan dan Spurs beli pemain bagus rasanya Spurs bisa bersaing di PL musim depan

Default Re: Wayne Mark Rooney

'I was awful!': Wayne Rooney reveals he HATED playing as a central striker for Manchester United because he 'wanted to get involved'... despite netting 34 goals in one season as Sir Alex Ferguson's main man

* Wayne Rooney has admitted he hated playing up front for Manchester United
* The United legend spent two seasons in that role between 2008 and 2010
* Centre forward Rooney netted 34 times in a single season for the Red Devils
* But United's record goalscorer admitted he despised that role and hated playing

Wayne Rooney confessed he hated playing as a central striker at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, despite scoring 34 goals in one season there in 2009-10.

The United and England all-time record goalscorer spent two full seasons as a centre-forward at Old Trafford, in Cristiano Ronaldo's last season at the club in 2008-09 and the campaign after the Portuguese season left.

In those two seasons, Rooney netted 54 times in 93 matches in all competitions but he has now admitted to Rio Ferdinand and Marcus Rashford that he found the centre-forward role as the hardest to play in.

Wayne Rooney admitted he hated playing up front for Manchester United as it was hard. The 2009-10 season saw Rooney score 34 times in the campaign as United's central striker

He told BT Sport: 'Them two seasons (2008-09, 2009-10) were the two seasons I played as a number nine on my own. I played there in and out in different games but I played for the whole season in them two years.

'I actually didn't enjoy the games as much. I've always been a player that wants to get involved in the game and it is something which Marcus will learn over next few years.

'It took me seven or eight years to learn how to play there and to learn to play with your back to goal. It's the hardest position to play. You've got big centre-backs coming through back of you and you're on your own.

Rooney claimed he hated his football as a number nine despite 54 goals in 93 matches

'I weren't enjoying it, but it was my best two years of scoring. I remember coming off the pitch and scoring two goals and saying, "I was awful. I didn't play that well today. I didn't have that many touches of the ball."'

Rooney's first season as a sole striker saw him guide United to the Premier League title and reach the Champions League final, where they lost 2-0 to Barcelona in Rome.

The following season, which saw Rooney score 34 times in that calendar year, saw the Red Devils finish second in the Premier League table behind Carlo Ancelotti's double-winning Chelsea side.

Rooney spent only one other season up front for United during the the 2008-09 season. Rooney then asked Sir Alex Ferguson (left) to make him an number 10 after scoring 34 goals

Didier Drogba won the Golden Boot that season with 29 goals, rather than Rooney's 26 top-flight strikes.

After that summer, Rooney asked United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to switch him to an attacking midfield role - a request that baffled his former Red Devils team-mate Ferdinand.

The centre-back recalled to Rooney: 'We spoke when we came back to pre-season. I remember speaking to you and you said, "I'm going to speak to the manager and say I want to play as a number ten."

'I was sitting there going, "But you scored 30-odd goals this season Wazza." But you weren't enjoying your football and I couldn't get my head around that.'

Rooney moved further back in his later Manchester United years and even went as far back as a deep-lying midfielder by the time he left Old Trafford after the 2016-17 season.

He ended his career as United's all-time record goalscorer with 253 goals, while he also has the most England international goals in history with 53 strikes.
