George Best's little brother avoids jail for punching neighbour so hard her head 'went back' and breaking her boyfriend's ankle as he threw him over a wall

The younger brother of soccer legend George Best yesterday narrowly avoided jail after a vicious attack on his neighbours.

Ian Best, 51, was found guilty by a jury of a late night punch up in street in Torquay, Devon - and claimed people were obsessed with his celebrity as the star's brother.

The Irishman was convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Shaun Berry last March and also guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm against Victoria Baker.

Taunton Crown Court heard Best punched Ms Baker so hard her 'head went back'.

And the jury heard she called police saying: 'He broke my partner's ankle and the bone is hanging out - he tried to throw me over a wall.

'My eyeball is actually bleeding. He is called Ian Best.'

Prosecutor Peter Coombe said there was a background of antipathy between the parties following an argument over damage to another resident's car.

The court heard at 10pm one March night Mr Berry and Ms Barker were returning from a supermarket when Best hurled abuse at them.

Best told police they were all obsessed with him because he is George Best's brother, said Mr Coombe.

The defendant told the court he lashed out at Mr Berry and his partner because they abused him about George.

He claimed they shouted 'who is your f***ing brother?' at him in the street.

He said: 'She (Ms Parker) kicked me in the nuts and pushed me in the side of the head.

'I restrained her - if she's going to hit me I'm going to stop her from hitting me. I was then dragged off by a neighbour who threw me to the ground.'

Ms Parker suffered a black eye and bruising on her back and neck and needed hospital treatment.

Mr Berry suffered a badly broken ankle which required surgery.

While Best was convicted, his stepson James Palmer, 24, was cleared of two charges of assault arising out of the same incident.

After the verdict chef Mr Berry said: 'I didn't even know who Ian Best was - I don't even like football. I hadn't really heard of George Best.

'It's caused no end of grief for our relationship. My partner ended up in hospital because of the stress. The financial problems have pushed us to the brink and I have not had a penny in benefits.

'For him to punch a woman like that. It was pretty horrific.

'It has turned my life upside down. I have lost my job and we are so far behind on our rent that we are being evicted.'

Best, of Torquay, Devon, was jailed for 24 months, suspended for two years, when he was sentenced at Taunton Crown Court.

And Judge David Ticehurst ordered that he pay his victims a total of £2,000 compensation.
