Default Dion Dublin

Dion Dublin
Dion Dublin (born 22 April 1969 in Leicester, Leicestershire) is a retired English footballer. He was capped four times for England. Dublin started his career as a centre back, but made his name at Cambridge United as a goal-scoring centre forward. However, in his later years he showed his versatility by becoming an accomplished defender. He previously played for Norwich City twice, Cambridge United, Manchester United, Coventry City, Millwall, Aston Villa, Leicester City and Celtic.

Manchester United
Having seen Dublin in a cup tie, Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson signed him for £1million on 7 August 1992, fighting off competition from Chelsea and Everton.[1] Dublin was something of a surprise purchase for United, after Ferguson had tried to sign Alan Shearer from Southampton but lost out to Blackburn Rovers.[1]

Dublin scored in the fourth Premier League game of the 1992-93 season, a last minute winner in United's first Premier league victory - 1-0 over Southampton at The Dell. However, on 2 September he suffered a broken leg against Crystal Palace in a 1-0 win at Old Trafford, when tackled recklessly by Eric Young, and was out of action for six months. By the time he had recovered, however, United had signed Eric Cantona and the Frenchman was firmly established as first choice strike partner to Mark Hughes. United won the league that season for the first time since 1967, but Dublin failed to make the 10 Premier League appearances required to gain a title winner's medal.

However, Dublin did receive a medal as a result of special dispensation from the Premier League, meaning Goalkeeper Les Sealey was the only major first team player not to get a medal. In 1993-94, Dublin regained his fitness but his first team chances were restricted by the excellent form of Eric Cantona. In December 1993, Ferguson agreed a deal with Everton manager Howard Kendall that would have seen Dublin moving to Goodison Park, but a member of Everton's board of directors, apparently feeling that Dublin was not worth the money Kendall had offered United, intervened to prevent the transfer going through - this incident led directly to Kendall's resignation as Everton manager and Dublin ended up staying at Old Trafford until the end of the season.

He managed five league appearances that season, scoring once in a 3-2 home win over Oldham Athletic in early April. He also managed a further goal in the Football League Cup second round first leg as United were beaten 2-1 by Stoke City at the Victoria Ground. The goal against Oldham would be the only competitive goal that Dublin would score for United at Old Trafford.

He was left out of the FA Cup winning team and failed to make enough appearances to merit another Premier League title winners medal and soon after the end of the season he was sold to Coventry City for £2million.

(Upppsss,, baru aja saya mersakan dejavu..lanjuttt)

Really nice info for me! menunggu comment dan tambahan dr expert2 lainnya

"Of all the players that could have come in, I mean what's the point in challenging for your place! He's got his collar up, he's cool and he was one of the best players in the world."
Dion Dublin on Eric the King
SkySport

Dion Dublin told Soccer AM he was grateful for his time at Man Utd, despite being overshadowed by a certain Eric Cantona!

The former United, Coventry City and Aston Villa striker was happy to reminisce about his playing days after hanging up his boots at the end of last season.

After beginning his career with Norwich City Dublin quickly moved onto Cambridge United where he spent four seasons and scored 52 goals in 156 games.

His personal success on the pitch was mirrored by the clubs as John Beck took Cambridge from division four into division two in the space of just two seasons between 1990 and 1992, while also guiding them into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup twice in same period.

United's success and Dublin's performances caught the eye of several top managers and in 1992 he moved to Manchester United after Beck sent a montage of Dublin's goals to Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I don't think Alex Ferguson had ever seen me play live, but I think he just had a look at (the montage) and liked what he saw," he said.

"I got a phone call from John Beck that said 'Dion Man Utd want to buy you' and it just didn't register for a good week!"

However, shortly after arriving at Old Trafford Dublin suffered a broken leg - forcing him to miss the majority of his first season in the top flight.

A certain Frenchman by the name of Eric Cantona later came in to replace him and Dublin revealed that he may as well have just given up on his chances to get back in the team there and then!

"There was just no way back, no way back! He changed Man Utd as a football club as well, it was incredible," he told Soccer AM.

"Of all the players that could have come in, I mean what's the point in challenging for your place! He's got his collar up, he's cool and he was one of the best players in the world."

Despite this blow Dublin, who later went on to forge a successful career with Aston Villa and Coventry City as well as represent England, admitted that he didn't regret his time with the Red Devils.

"In some ways it was a bit of a kick in the teeth," he said. "But in other ways I got to train with him and meet him so I got to learn off him."

"The players I played with at United were incredible. Bryan Robson for instance was probably the best midfield player that's ever lived in an England shirt."

Since bringing the curtain down on his career Dublin has joined the Sky Sports team as an expert pundit on the Premier League.

His last piece of action as a professional footballer took place at Hillsborough during Norwich City's match with Sheffield Wednesday and he revealed it was an emotional affair.

"I didn't expect it, but the Norwich fans were going to give me a good ovation," he said. "But 42,000 people stood up, the referee stopped the game, the press box stood up, the director's box stood up and it was just incredible.

"I'm just waiting for the DVD now to put in my collection!"

Former Norwich City star Dion Dublin to present Radio One documentary
by John Owens

He was a fans’ favourite in Norwich and has invented his own musical instrument – now, multi-talented football legend Dion Dublin is to take to the airwaves as he presents his own documentary to a possible audience of millions.

The former Canaries star, who played 79 times for the club, will next month be presenting his own show on Radio One named Boot Boys, which looks at all aspects of the life of a footballer.

The hour-long show will be his first foray into the world of radio and has been a year in the making.

However, having been scrutinised by thousands of fans every weekend in his playing days, Dion is used to pressure and has even had a bit of help from friend Dave Vitty – aka Comedy Dave from the popular Chris Moyles morning show.

He told the Evening News: “It’s going to be good and it will be nerve wracking but you need to have nerves to perform to perform to your best, that’s whether scoring a penalty or something else, and Dave has been helping me out a lot so I’m looking forward to it.”

“I know that I have to deliver as Radio One have put their faith in me but I believe I can do it so hopefully I will come across okay and it will be a good listen.”

The show will involve interviews with several footballers.

But though he has tasted what it’s like at the top, having made more than 700 appearances for clubs that include Manchester United, the focus won’t just be at the star-studded world of multi million pound deals and World Cup call ups.

“The idea is it’s talking to people involved and looking at what it takes to be footballer and how things have changed, and it’s about getting the message out there that it’s not just a a breeze and turning up to training in a big car – there’s a lot of work behind it,” he said.

Boot Boys will be aired on September 19.

Dublin backs Lambert to keep Norwich up

Dion Dublin believes Norwich will survive their first season back in the Barclays Premier League despite their inactivity in the summer transfer window.

The former England international, who ended his professional career at Carrow Road in 2008, is confident Canaries boss Paul Lambert is the key to ensure their survival in the top flight.

Lambert led Norwich's charge back into the Premier League with back-to-back promotions after taking over the then League One side in 2009.

And Dublin thinks he has the focus to keep them away from the drop zone at the end of the season.

"I do feel that they'll be okay," Dublin told Press Association Sport. "Norwich will stay up because of the determination of their manager. He's done a great job. He possibly does need more players but he possibly has his hands tied.

"Most managers do unless they're Chelsea and Man City and you can go and buy whoever you want, but a lot of managers don't have that luxury."
