PremierLeague - Thu 9 Oct 2014
Ferdinand the latest to join BPL 500 club
QPR defender and six-time title winner becomes 11th player to make 500 BPL appearances

Rio Ferdinand, hailed by Sir Alex Ferguson as "one of the best central defenders" he worked with during his 27-year tenure at Manchester United, became the 11th player to reach 500 Barclays Premier League appearances when he started for Queens Park Rangers in their 2-0 defeat at West Ham United on Sunday.

The landmark was reached with defeat on his return to his first club, for whom he made his top flight debut in May 1996, with the centre-back joining an elite list after a distinguished 18-year professional career.

After establishing himself as a regular in the heart of West Ham's defence from 1996 to 2000, Ferdinand became the world's most expensive defender when he moved to Leeds in November that year.

Quote:
Rio Ferdinand facts

Date of birth 7 Nov 1978
Place of birth London
Height 6ft 2in (189cm)
BPL appearances 500
BPL goals 11
BPL titles 6
Champions League wins 1
FA Cup wins 1
League Cup wins 2
International caps 81
International goals 24
.
Ferdinand then played a key role as the Yorkshire club reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals and finished fourth in the league in his first season at Elland Road. He then moved to Manchester United in July 2002 and went on to win six Barclays Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups during a glorious 12-year spell at Old Trafford that ended in May 2014.

Following his sixth league title with Man Utd a year earlier, Ferguson, who retired in the same month, said: "Rio has a natural ability to read the game and I said last month that I believed that this season has been the best of his Manchester United career."

Dwight Yorke, who left Man Utd the same summer that Ferdinand joined the club, told www.manutd.com: "He has to be one of the greats. He's definitely up there with the very best, he's colossal.

"Over the years not too many strikers have got the better of him. He's always had that 'Rolls Royce' style - a fantastic defender who's quick across the ground. He can see a pass, and he always seems to be in total control of the game. He reads the game so well.*

"The word 'colossal' comes into play because that's the kind of player he was for United, he had all the attributes to his game. He's the sort of player that any upcoming defender would want to model himself on because he was so outstanding week in, week out whenever he performed."

After moving on from the Red Devils this summer, he stayed in the top flight when he signed a one-year deal with promoted QPR.

Ferdinand was reunited with Harry Redknapp, who handed him his debut at West Ham. The QPR manager said to www.qpr.co.uk: "Rio's a fantastic player and a great professional - I'm delighted we've been able to bring him here.

"I signed Rio as a 14-year-old. He was class on the field and off the field then, and he's continued in that manner throughout his career. During his time at Manchester United, he was the best defender in Europe, if not the world."

Giggs leads '500 club' list

Player / Clubs / Matches / Goals / Clean Sheets
Ryan Giggs / Man Utd / 632 / 109 / 173
Frank Lampard / West Ham, Chelsea, Man City / 581* / 173 / 216
David James / Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham, Man City, Portsmouth / 572 / 0 / 169
Gareth Barry / Aston Villa, Man City, Everton / 536* / 50 / 158
Gary Speed / Leeds, Everton, Newcastle, Bolton / 535 / 80 / 141
Emile Heskey / Leicester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Wigan, Aston Villa / 516 / 110 / 100

Rio Ferdinand / West Ham, Leeds, Man Utd, QPR / 500* / 11 / 188
*still played
.
Despite a difficult start to his QPR career, Ferdinand still boasts an impressive Barclays Premier League record, and has contributed to 188 clean sheets in 500 matches, more than any other defender or goalkeeper to have reached the landmark.

The former England international has played 43,530 minutes of BPL football so far and has notched 11 goals during that time. His most recent was the winner for Man Utd against Swansea City in May 2013, which was Ferguson's last home match in charge, and he has scored three times against Liverpool, more than any other side.

His only red card in the top flight came against Blackburn Rovers in February 2006, and he has conceded only two fouls and has not been given a single card in his last 36 Barclays Premier League appearances.

Ryan Giggs, who won 13 BPL titles during his illustrious Manchester United career, leads the list of players in the 500 club, with 632 appearances.

Frank Lampard, on loan at Manchester City, and Everton midfielder Gareth Barry are the highest ranked active players with 581 and 536 appearances respectively.

Berkaitan dengan masalah cedera di atas, berikit komparasi per club EPL jika dikonversi ke jumlah hari yg hilang (days lost) akibat cedera yg diderita pemain2nya selama era EPL (sumber: TEAMtalk)

Mesut Ozil is injured, but how badly do Arsenal fare on the fitness front compared to the rest of the Premier League?

1. ARSENAL (1716 days lost): You won't be surprised to learn the Gunners lost more days to injury than any other Premier League.
2. TOTTENHAM (1441): In second place behind their north London neighbours were Spurs, with Younes Kaboul among their key injury victims.
3. ASTON VILLA (1426): Charles N'Zogbia and Jores Okore alone contributed to nearly 500 days of this total between them.
4. EVERTON (1367): Darron Gibson was one of those to spend lots of time in the Goodison Park treatment room last season.
5. NEWCASTLE (1303): Ryan Taylor (pictured) has been injured for so long you could be forgiven for forgetting he still plays for the Magpies.
6. WEST BROM (1161): Fit again now, Ben Foster spent a large portion of last season sat on the sidelines at The Hawthorns.
7. MANCHESTER UNITED (1146): The Red Devils have suffered on the injury front this season and did last term, too, with Darren Fletcher's issues long-standing.

Lanjut ....
Dari 7 club di atas, Newcastle dan WestBrom pernah terlempar dari ajang EPL

8. FULHAM (1095): How differently might the Cottagers' season have gone were it not for injuries to the likes of Brede Hangeland?
9. WEST HAM (1094): Both Andy Carroll and Ricardo Vaz Te missed over half of last season for the Hammers.
10. CRYSTAL PALACE (1061): They missed out on a real top-10 finish but Glenn Murray helped earn the Eagles a top-half place in this particular table.
11. HULL CITY (1017): After a superb start to the season, Robbie Brady spent more days out injured than any Tigers player in 2013-14.
12. LIVERPOOL (997): The Reds' injury record would have looked even better were it not for long-term absentee Jose Enrique.
13. NORWICH CITY (978): After being relegated to the Championship, the Canaries will no doubt have been left ruing injuries to the likes of Elliott Bennett.

Jika mencermati daftar yg ada, Club-club seperti Liverpool, City and Chelsea bisa dibilang "lebih beruntung" daripada rival2nya di papan atas ....
________________________________

14. MANCHESTER CITY ( 929): Stevan Jovetic spent a large portion of his maiden campaign at the Etihad Stadium sat on the sidelines.
15. SWANSEA CITY (922): Neil Taylor got injured early on last season but, thankfully for the Swans, young Ben Davies stepped into the breach admirably.
16. SUNDERLAND (735): How much more easily would the Black Cats have survived were it not for the fitness problems of Steven Fletcher?
17. SOUTHAMPTON (708): The Saints fared well on the injury front last season, but Gaston Ramirez was among those to spent time on the treatment table.
18. CARDIFF CITY (609): The Bluebirds finished the season with the third best injury record - but big-money signing Andreas Cornelius didn't help.
19. CHELSEA (556): Fernando Torres was among those to spend time out, but the Blues managed to keep the majority of their stars fit last season.
20. STOKE CITY (555): They lost the least days to injury of any Premier League club - and it would have been even better were it not for Robert Huth.

QPR striker, Charlie Austin achieves rare hat-trick, only fifth player in BPL history to get goal, assist and red card in same match » Queens Park Rangers 2-0 Burnley (6/12/2014)
Another four players: Mark Viduka, Shaun Bartlett, Bobby Zamora and Marc Antoine Fortune (the last, April 2013)
