Wayne Rooney ready to walk away from Derby if they are handed retrospective points deduction and relegated to League One - as crisis-hit club hit a new low and face starting pre-season with just NINE players

Wayne Rooney is ready to walk away from Derby County if they are relegated to League One with the club’s short-term future mired in chaos.

In another extraordinary development at the crisis-hit club on Thursday, the EFL issued an ‘interchangeable fixture list’ for Derby that would enable them to swap places with Wycombe if they are given a retrospective points deduction for last season sending them down to League One ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.

An independent tribunal ruled on Wednesday that Derby should be fined £100,000 and warned as to their future conduct after being found guilty of prohibited accounting policies.

But the EFL may appeal that decision as they want to see the Championship club punished with a points deduction.

Such is the EFL’s determination to pursue the case that the fixture list published on Thursday contained provisions for Wycombe to regain their place in the second tier if the matter is concluded by August 7.

Wycombe were relegated to League One on the final day of last season, finishing one point behind Derby, and their owner Rob Couhig has threatened legal action if they are not reinstated.

Derby remain confident they will stay in the Championship, however, and that any points deduction would apply to next season, as their legal team are planning to delay the process as long as possible.

Rooney has made it clear privately that he does not want to manage in League One after doing well to keep them in the Championship in difficult circumstances in his first management job.

The former England captain signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at Derby in January, but given the club have been found guilty of numerous rule breaches by the EFL it is likely he could walk away without having to pay compensation, citing his employer’s conduct.

Derby’s plans for next season are in tatters with senior executives not answering calls from coaching staff on Thursday and their playing personnel decimated.

The Rams managed to beat the drop last season but could be hit with a points deduction still. Rooney has made it clear privately he does not want to manage in League One. Wycombe would be restored to the Championship if Derby were hit with a points deduction

As it stands Rooney has only nine senior players to work with ahead of the scheduled return for pre-season training next week, and a handful of academy players have also refused to sign new contracts.

In addition, the EFL have rejected an application by the club to register a contract extension for striker Jack Marriott, which they had already announced publicly.

Derby owner Mel Morris is desperate to sell, but agreements he had announced with two potential buyers collapsed last season and talks with an unnamed American group have been delayed by uncertainty over which division they will be in.

Wayne Rooney hails Manchester United's impending signing of Jadon Sancho... but warns Solskjaer the £73m move will ramp up the pressure on him to finally deliver silverware at Old Trafford

* Wayne Rooney has praised Manchester United's deal for winger Jadon Sancho

* Solskjaer hasn't won a trophy but has still received praise for his work at United

Wayne Rooney believes that Jadon Sancho's arrival at Manchester United will be hugely beneficial for the club but warned manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he will now be under greater scrutiny to deliver silverware.

United have agreed a deal in principle to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho for £73million, with the transfer close to completion.

Solskjaer's side have also been linked with other high-profile players, such as Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, and United legend Rooney stressed that the manager will now be under greater scrutiny.

‘I think there will be a lot of pressure, which there should be with Manchester United,’ said Rooney, as reported by Metro.

‘Sancho coming in, they are rumoured to be in for a few more players.

‘They are in a period now where the fans will be wanting success, silverware, and Ole and his coaching staff will be under pressure to deliver that.'

Rooney spoke of the competition that United will face next season.

He said: ‘(Manchester) City, Chelsea the Champions League winners, Liverpool, there are some very good teams, but you can see with Manchester United they are getting gradually better.

‘I think they will be in a place where they really will challenge next season.’

Rooney was speaking after his Derby side were beaten 2-1 by United in a pre-season friendly.

United haven't won the Premier League title since the 2012-13 campaign, when Rooney was still at the club.

Solskjaer guided United to second place in the league last season but is still awaiting his first silverware as the club's manager.

Tahith Chong, who is set to join Birmingham on loan, put United ahead against Derby, with youngster Facundo Pellestri making it 2-0. Derby got a goal back through Colin Kazim-Richards but United still managed to prevail.

Former England ace Wayne Rooney has claimed he was 'set up' and has complained to Greater Manchester Police after social media was flooded with images of him getting close to a woman in a nightclub and asleep in a hotel room while two half-naked women took photos around him.

Photos on social media appear to show the married Derby manager, 35, with his arms around the waist of an unknown woman while out at a nightclub in Manchester. Other images appear to show Rooney asleep in a hotel room with at least two half-naked women.

MailOnline understands the images were taken last night, on the first weekend that nightclubs in England were allowed to open in more than 15 months due to lockdown restrictions imposed during the pandemic. There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on Rooney's part.

It is understood that Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigation after Rooney's lawyers made a complaint. Though his legal team would not confirm what complaint was made, it is understood that the former England star fears he has been 'set up'.

MailOnline have approached Greater Manchester Police for further information. Rooney's representatives and Derby County Football Club declined to comment.

Rooney has been with childhood sweetheart Coleen for nearly two decades. The pair started dating when they were 16 after leaving school, married in 2008 and have four sons together.

Rooney is currently busy preparing his Derby side for the new Championship season, which kicks off in a fortnight's time.

But he faces a significant challenge ahead of his first game, against Huddersfield, because the team currently nine registered senior players - two of which are goalkeepers.

Just yesterday he vowed he will not walk away as manager, but warned the club it would be 'impossible' for him to field a team for the start of the new Sky Bet Championship season without significant signings.

The midlands club are currently under a transfer embargo, preventing them from signing players, after failing to provide financial records from previous years.

But earlier this week after the EFL altered its rules due to 'exceptional circumstances' caused by the club's coronavirus outbreak last season.

'It's other people which I can't control who need to make bigger decisions that I do,' Rooney told Sky Sports News.

Rooney is England's record goalscorer, netting 53 in 119 appearances for the Three Lions. The forward spent much of club career with Manchester United, where he scored 183 goals in 393 appearances.

Rooney also won 16 trophies at Untied, where he moved, aged 18, after completing a £25million move from his boyhood club Everton. He also earned a host of personal accolades, including the 2009-10 PFA Player of the Season award and five Premier League Player of the Month awards.

Wayne Rooney confident Manchester United CAN mount a 'title challenge' this season after signing his former Old Trafford attacking partner Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus

* Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to Manchester United 12 years after leaving
* Wayne Rooney believes Ronaldo will help United mount a title challenge
* Rooney and Ronaldo fired United to success in the second half of the 2000s
* The Derby manager said it won't be as straightforward for his ex-team-mate

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has tipped the club to challenge for the title this season after signing former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese superstar has rejoined the club, 12 years after leaving for Real Madrid to forge a record breaking career.

During their time together, Rooney and Ronaldo fired United to three Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy.

Rooney who retired in January at the age of 35 after taking on the full-time manager role at Derby, said that serial-winner Ronaldo will be a boost to his new team-mates.

He said: 'I haven't spoken to Cristiano since his return and I won't be going to the game on Saturday.

'I've got a day off on Saturday and two of my sons have got their own games, so I'll be taking them and being a taxi driver on Saturday.

'Obviously I follow Manchester United, I want them to do well, and I think it's great for them that they've brought Cristiano back.

'His mentality will rub off on the younger players, especially, so I think it's a great signing.

\'Cristiano will know himself it's not going to be as simple or straightforward for him as it was in Spain or Italy.

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United can mount a title challenge with Cristiano Ronaldo. Rooney and Ronaldo contributed to United's success in the second half of the 2000s. Derby manager Rooney says it won't be as 'straightforward' for Ronaldo as in Spain or Italy

'It's a physical league, but he knows that, because he's played in it before, so I'm sure he's prepared and ready to go and score goals again for United.'

When asked about how Ronaldo will fare in his second spell at Old Trafford, he added: 'He's one of the best players in the world.

'We saw, in the game against Ireland, what he does. Last couple of minutes, he scores a couple of goals, great headers, so he can have a massive impact on the Premier League.

'I think United are finally ready to go and challenge for the title, and I really feel they have to, this year.

'So Cristiano's going to be a very big player, I think he's going to have big moments in the season and I'm sure he'll score a lot of goals.'

Wayne Rooney could be 'aggressive, loud and brash' as a player but is the 'total opposite' as a manager and he's successfully proven himself to his Derby squad, claims Rio Ferdinand

* Rio Ferdinand believes Wayne Rooney has changed since his playing days
* Ferdinand said his former team-mate could be aggressive, loud and brash
* But the former Manchester United man says the Derby boss is now calmer
* He also praised the job Rooney has done at the Rams since taking over

Rio Ferdinand insists Wayne Rooney the manager is the 'total opposite' to Wayne Rooney the player, who could be 'aggressive, loud and brash' during his Manchester United days.

Rooney took over as manager of the Derby in November last year after Phillip Cocu was sacked and was able to guide the club to safety on the final day of the season.

The ex-England striker then decided to stay at the club despite their financial difficulties. The Rams were put under a transfer embargo, meaning they were unable to sign any players for a fee and were limited to a squad size of 25.

Rio Ferdinand insists Wayne Rooney the manager is the 'total opposite' to Wayne Rooney the player. The pundit said Rooney could be aggressive as a player but is calm as Derby manager

However, they have taken seven points from their first seven Championship games and have lost just once.

Ferdinand went to watch Rooney in action at one of Derby's training sessions for his FIVE Youtube channel and was impressed by what he saw.

'As a player, he was quiet sometimes, can be loud sometimes, can be brash, can be aggressive,' Ferdinand said of Rooney.

'He's the total opposite. It's mad, he's the total opposite as a manager. There's a respect level with the players, I think immediately you get that from these players as it's Wayne Rooney.

Ferdinand has been impressed by the way his former United team-mate has handled the situation he has found himself in at Derby

'But then you've got to prove yourself, and I think every player I've spoken to here, whether that be Curtis Davies, Ravel [Morrison], etc, they've all said like "He's good you know."

'Because they didn't know what to expect like anyone new through the door, but he's brought them together, there's definitely a more close-knit group now and they're really young.

'And he's been through some hardships already in his young, early start as a manager, but when I listen to him in the meeting, him and Liam Rosenior, his coach, they were positive, they were clear, their messages were really bang on point.

'We got a group that we chat into, a WhatsApp group with all the old Man Utd players. Listen, the first thing I'm going to be saying in there is 'wow'.

'The thing that does come out of it is he absolutely loves it - tactically as well.'

Ferdinand also praised the 35-year-old for the way he has handled the club's off-the-field problems and said nobody would have blamed him for walking away from the club in the summer.

Derby have taken seven points from seven games despite their financial difficulties

'I'm impressed by how he's dealt with all of the things outside of the pitch,' Ferdinand continued.

'End of last season, they stay up with the last kick of the game, everyone thought they were down, his first job.

'He would have been well within his rights and people would have said 'Do you know what? Well done to you,' if he would have gone 'Do you know what guys, thanks, but I'm going to leave now'.

'Probably the hardest job, one of the hardest jobs about at the moment, but he stayed on, and I said to him, 'I probably would have walked,' because his reputation would have been intact.

'Everyone would have still said, 'Do you know what? I'll give him a job. He kept them up last year,' but he's took it on again this year and he's playing a risky game, but he's passionate about it and he believes in himself.'

Derby are currently 14th in the Championship with one win and four draws.

Wayne Rooney reveals he sought help over mental health issues as he struggled to deal with pressures of playing for Man United and England

* Wayne Rooney became the record goal scorer for both United and England
* One of his lowest points was his infamous red card at the 2006 World Cup
* United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo was accused of trying to get him sent off

Wayne Rooney has revealed he sought help over mental health to cope with the pressure of playing for Manchester United and England.

Speaking on Tuesday at a trailer for the documentary Rooney, to be screened on Amazon Prime early next year, the Derby manager, 35, said he wanted to give viewers ‘a real insight into what was going on inside my head’ throughout a colourful career.

‘People talk about mental health, I did see someone at times,’ said Rooney, who remains United and England’s all-time leading goal scorer.

Wayne Rooney struggled with the pressure of playing for Manchester United and England

‘It is about realising what was going through your head and trying to cope with the pressure of playing for Manchester United and trying to be successful — playing for your country, then captaining your country and taking a lot of that pressure on as well.

‘Getting thrown into the spotlight as a 16-year-old and having to deal with everything that comes with playing for your country at 17 was all new to me. I was learning on my feet and of course there were some mistakes along the way.

‘Throughout a young sportsperson’s life, they go through difficult periods and there is a lot of me talking about moments where I was really down, I didn’t want to be around anyone.’

Rooney won 120 international caps and captained his country during a successful career

One of Rooney’s lowest points was his red card at the 2006 World Cup, when United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo was accused of trying to get him sent off for stamping on Portugal’s Ricardo Carvalho.

‘What is interesting to know is what was going on inside my head after the red card,’ added Rooney. ‘I was sitting in the dressing room alone, knowing you are potentially out of the World Cup — but also knowing on the flip side that if you do qualify, you are going to be out of the semi-final and possibly final if you go through.

‘It is that thought process of what is going through your head at such a young age, knowing that either way you have let your country down, let yourself down. It will be interesting to see.’

One of Rooney’s lowest points was his infamous red card at the 2006 World Cup

In clips from the documentary, Rooney’s wife Coleen addresses allegations over his private life, saying: ‘I forgive him, but it wasn’t acceptable.’

Rooney adds: ‘People still look at me in a different way. For me it’s important that people remember me for who I am rather than what I’ve done.’

The documentary charts Rooney’s tough upbringing on a council estate in Croxteth that helped forge his combative style on the pitch. He admits getting into fights with his father Thomas.

‘I was brought up to fight for my place to play, fight for everything. That will never leave me,’ said Rooney.

‘I wasn’t the nicest kid. I had a lot of fights when I was younger. I’ve had full-on arguments with my dad and he would give me a slap.’

Meanwhile, United confirmed yesterday that Raphael Varane will be out of action for ‘a few weeks’ after sustaining a groin muscle injury in France’s win over Spain in the Nations League final on Sunday.

Varane is set to miss a crucial run of fixtures in the Premier League and Champions League for United, who are also likely to be without his central defensive partner Harry Maguire for Saturday’s trip to Leicester.

Wayne Rooney sensationally accuses Manchester United stars of a lack of effort and commitment and slams their 'unacceptable' displays... as he also stops short of backing struggling boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

* Wayne Rooney has hit out at Manchester United's players following their 5-0 loss
* The United legend accused United's players of lacking effort and commitment
* However, Rooney stopped short of offering his backing to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Wayne Rooney accused Manchester United stars of lacking effort and commitment on Thursday night - but stopped short of offering his backing to struggling boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United’s all-time leading scorer, now in charge of troubled Championship club Derby, watched in horror as his former club were beaten 5-0 at home by Liverpool last Sunday, plunging Solskjaer’s future into serious doubt.

Solskjaer is clinging on ahead of games against Tottenham, Atalanta and Manchester City that may determine his fate. While Rooney gave only a lukewarm assessment of his former team-mate, he was in no doubt who should take the majority of the blame.

‘There are very educated people at the top of Manchester United,’ he said. ‘I’m sure they will be looking at everything to see how they move forward in the near future, whether that’s with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or without.

Wayne Rooney has hit out at Man United's players after they were humiliated by Liverpool. Rooney (right) chose to stop short of offering his full backing to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (left)

‘The players have to question themselves and look at themselves. It’s too easy for the manager to take all the stick when those players are being paid a lot of money to do the job and I don’t think they’re doing it well enough.

‘There is a big responsibility on those players. They are world-class players, international players and a club like Manchester United need more. Those players need to feel hurt when they lose games.

‘There are high demands at that club, high pressure, and I’m seeing too many players not willing to run back, not willing to defend, not willing to put everything on the line and that’s not acceptable. Are you telling me that’s the manager’s fault or the players’ fault? I don’t know.’

The United hierarchy have resisted calls to dismiss Solskjaer this week, despite suggestions he no longer commands the support of key figures in the dressing room.

After finishing second to City last season, United brought back Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer and also added Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho but their performances have gone backwards, with five defeats in their last nine games in all competitions.

Former England captain Rooney made 559 appearances in nearly 13 years at Old Trafford, scoring 253 goals. He won 13 major trophies in that period, including five Premier League titles – a prize United have not won since 2013, Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season as manager.

He added: ‘The Liverpool game wasn’t easy to watch. Liverpool are a fantastic team, similar to United in terms of the world-class players they have and they probably have the best in the world at the minute in Mohamed Salah.

Rooney accused Solskjaer's players of lacking effort and commitment during the heavy defeat

‘But the only difference is that they are working off the ball. At Derby, my players know that they won’t play if they don’t work hard enough. There is no excuse not to work. It’s the first thing I said to the players when I took the job.

‘Whatever decision [United] make they’ll feel it’s the right decision. What I know is you can’t just bow down to what [people on the outside] want.

‘I’m sure United have a plan in place whether that’s with or without Ole. They will make decisions on that at the right time, I’m sure.’

'The whole reason in me going into management is Manchester United': Wayne Rooney reveals his goal of returning to Old Trafford in the dugout after the Derby boss SNUBBED an interview with boyhood club Everton

* Wayne Rooney is currently managing at crisis-torn Championship club Derby
* He turned down the chance to be interviewed for the Everton job this season
* Rooney has now revealed his goal is to become Manchester United manager

Wayne Rooney has revealed he went into management to one day take to the dugout at Manchester United.

The 36-year-old is one of the club's greatest players after becoming their leading scorer of all time with 253 goals in 13 trophy-laden seasons.

Rooney is also a fan favourite at Everton, coming through the club's academy and returning for a season towards the end of his playing career.

The Derby manager though snubbed the chance to have an interview with Everton to replace Rafael Benitez when the former Liverpool manager was sacked.

As reported by the Sun, Rooney has now admitted: 'The whole reason in me going into management is Manchester United. I got offered the job interview for the Everton job.

'I want to be Manchester United manager. I know I am not ready now but I have to plan everything I do to make sure one day it will happen.'

Wayne Rooney's sole goal of going into management was to take the job at Manchester United. Rooney, now at Derby, became one of Manchester United's greatest ever players during his playing career. Rooney snubbed the opportunity to be interviewed by Everton as a replacement for Rafa Benitez. He said it would be 'great' to manage Everton but his new comments suggest his main aim is to return to Old Trafford

Rooney's comments come despite his emotional ties with the Toffees, who he made his playing debut as a 16-year-old in 2002.

He is currently in charge of crisis-torn Championship club Derby and attracted interest from Everton after they sacked Benitez.

The former England captain though revealed in January that he chose not to pursue the opportunity, with the Toffees instead going for Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

‘They approached my agent and asked me to interview for the job which I turned down,’ he said. ‘I believe I will be a Premier League manager and that I’m ready for that, and if that’s with Everton in future that would be great.

‘It was a very difficult decision but I’ve got a job here at Derby which is important to me.'

Though Rooney said it would be 'great' to be Everton manager, his comments that he got into management to become Manchester United might frustrate some of their fans.

Rooney burst onto the scene at Everton before joining United in 2004 for £27million.

At Old Trafford, he won five Premier League titles, the Champions League in 2008, among a host of other trophies.

He scored 11 goals in 40 appearances for Everton after returning in 2017, before later having spells with D.C. United and Derby.

Rooney was named permanent manager at Derby in January 2020. He kept the club in the Championship on the final day of last season but they entered administration last September and have been docked a total of 21 points.

Derby sit bottom of the table on 25 points - eight points from safety with just seven games remaining.

Rooney last week entered the Premier League Hall of Fame, along with Patrick Vieira, joining six other legends who were inducted last week.

sepertinya Rooney harus menimba ilmu beberapa musim lagi sebelum melatih United agar tidak bernasib sama dengan Ole. mungkin setelah 2 pelatih United yg akan datang

Wayne Rooney reveals he'd 'LOVE to manage' Everton and Manchester United in the future... as the Derby County boss reveals he rejected Toffees' approach as 'it wasn't the right time' to take hot seat of boyhood club

* Wayne Rooney made an appearance on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports
* The Derby boss spoke openly about his ambitions in football management
* He says he'd love to one day take charge of the two clubs closest to his heart

Wayne Rooney hopes that he will one day get to manage one of the two clubs that are closest to his heart.

Rooney has done well since taking the difficult job at Derby County but admits a return to Everton or Manchester United is a career ambition.

The 36-year-old grew up and Everton fan and began his career with them before joining United, where he spent 13 seasons.

Asked on Monday Night Football about his future, he said: 'There are two clubs: Everton and Manchester United. I'm an Everton fan, I was at Man Utd for 13 years. I feel if I keep doing what I'm doing, keep learning, keep improving, those two clubs one day in the future I'd love to go and manage.

Wayne Rooney says he'd love to manage Everton or Manchester United in the future. Rooney has made a good start to life in management in a tricky situation at Derby County

'You've got to trust in yourself and believe in yourself. Of course there will be temptation there. There might be offers that come in and you think, "I'm going to go for that". But you need to be in the right place and I believe I'm in the right place. I'm developing as a manager, developing as a coach and I'm learning.

'I understand when Frank Lampard went to Chelsea, it's so difficult to say no. But when you go into one of these big clubs you need to make sure it's the right time and you're able to develop and take that club forward.

'I got approached by Everton to interview for the manager's job but I'm in a job, I'm still learning and I felt it wasn't the right time.'

'Thanks for taking me in as one of your own': Wayne Rooney breaks silence after Derby resignation as he urges fans to show the next manager the same 'loyalty' and 'support'

* Wayne Rooney announced he would be resigning from the club last Friday
* The former Manchester United player spent 18 months as manager of the club
* Oversaw one of the most tumultuous periods in the history of Derby County

Wayne Rooney has broken his silence after announcing he would be resigning from his post as manager of Derby County last week.

Rooney, who resigned last week hours after it was announced that Clowes Developments had been successful in purchasing Pride Park, spent 18 months in charge of the club having initially arrived as a player.

Posting on Instagram on Wednesday afternoon, Rooney thanked all the players and staff for their support over the last three years and said that this had been one of the 'hardest' decisions of his career.

He wrote: 'A massive thank you to all the fans, players, and staff at Derby for your support over the last three years.

Wayne Rooney said the decision to resign was one of the hardest of his football career to date

'This has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make in my career.'

He added: 'Thanks for taking me in as one of your own. Please get behind the next manager and give them what you gave me, trust, loyalty, and unbelievable support. Some great memories I’ll never forget.'

In his first managerial role, Rooney was praised for his professionalism and ability to inspire a Derby team who were in an uncertain place with the club's immediate future in serious doubt.

Administrators Quantuma announced they had formally accepted Clowes Developments' bid. Derby have named Liam Rosenior as their interim manager after Wayne Rooney's departure

Wayne Rooney's statement in full which he posted to his Instagram account on Wednesday

At various stages last season, it appeared as though Rooney was conjuring up one of English football's great miracles in guiding Derby to Championship safety despite the club having had 21 points deducted.

As it was, the gap was just too much but Rooney appeared to have remained loyal to the club, saying that he would remain should a buyer be found for the club.

When Kirchner's bid collapsed, the club was thrown into further uncertainty and Rooney himself, who always stressed the need for the football club to be saved, found his position in uncertain terms.

It has been reported since his resignation last week that his agent, Paul Stretford, is under investigation for allegedly paying players' wages in an attempt to push through Kirchner's bid.

A spokesperson for the Triple S agency, that represents Rooney, defended its decision to pay the wages.

A spokesperson told The Telegraph: 'The Triple S Group is aware of The FA’s routine investigation – indeed, it was the Triple S Group that voluntarily disclosed the information to The FA which has resulted in further inquiry.

'We were surprised that details of this investigation have appeared in the press while the investigative process is ongoing. Regardless, the Triple S Group is confident in the legal advice it sought originally and will continue to cooperate fully with The FA to resolve this matter swiftly. No further comment will be made at this time.'

Meanwhile, Liam Rosenior, Rooney's assistant during his time at the club, has been placed in charge on an interim basis ahead of the club's pre-season preparations.
