Default Re: Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw's redemption: His revival under upbeat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after years of criticism and injury problems at Manchester United has made the left back a key man in England's bid for Euros glory this summer

* Luke Shaw has shone for England at the Euros, most notably against Germany
* It has been an impressive revival from Shaw, following some very tough years
* Shaw has come in for criticism from many managers down the years
* But he has enjoyed a renaissance under the upbeat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* And he has taken his fine form for Man United into the England camp at Euros

It was on a warm July evening in Los Angeles, seven years ago, that Luke Shaw hit the first bump in the road which would have made you doubt if he could play for England in a game like Saturday's quarter-final in Rome.

He had only just signed for Manchester United, but within minutes of his first public training session, his new manager Louis van Gaal was berating him. The Dutchman declared Shaw unfit, dropped him for the third pre-season match against Inter Milan and subjected him to an individual training regime. 'He needs to be fit and is not fit enough to do what I want,' Van Gaal warned.

Shaw has heard that kind of negativity from almost every manager he has worked with, so his vital contribution to Tuesday's 2-0 win over Germany was a true tale of redemption.

Manchester United and England left back Luke Shaw has enjoyed a brilliant revival recently. Shaw shone for England as they overcame Germany to progress to the Euro quarter-finals

Van Gaal criticised England boss Roy Hodgson at one stage, without irony, for publicly lecturing Shaw on his fitness, while Jose Mourinho even criticised the full-back when he had played well.

In the midst of all that, there were the mental and physical scars left by a poorly timed tackle from PSV Eindhoven's Hector Moreno which left Shaw hospitalised in the Netherlands, his leg broken in two places, in 2015.

The 25-year-old's return to the top of his game, as Manchester United's player of the year last season, is testament to the effects that positive management can have. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who encourages where Mourinho used to confront, has made a huge difference to Shaw's mindset.

Shaw also speaks of how his family are prepared to challenge him to push himself more. This is especially true of his partner, Anouska Santos, who does not just say what he wants to hear.

Shaw has learned the hard way after tough spells at United, including under Jose Mourinho

The process of maturity has helped. Shaw has been around at the top of the game for so long that it's easy to forget he is still only 25. He has not always been at peak fitness in that time, too often pulling out of England camps because of physical issues.

His redemption is about a virtuous circle of factors. Evading injury has enabled him to become fitter and find the confidence which made Tuesday's display his best in an England shirt.

The statistics show that Shaw — among the nation's top six players at the Euros so far — has delivered the most crosses of any England player in their four games.

Yet it was not only in wide positions that he proved so critical to the win at Wembley.

Defensively, his pressing job on Joshua Kimmich was critical to preventing the Germans finding the crosses which had damaged Portugal so severely in their second group game.

Shaw also denied Kimmich space to supply balls into central areas, where Germany had previously focused most of their attacks.

But the positivity of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has helped the left back flourish at Old Trafford

But Shaw's performance will be best remembered for the moments of intuition which saw him involved in both of England's goals.

For the opener, he was running outside substitute Jack Grealish at the right time to seize on the space the Aston Villa player had created by drawing Kimmich away. Then he delivered the ball for Raheem Sterling to score.

For England's second, he turned over possession high up the pitch and played Grealish in on an overlapping run, from which Grealish delivered the cross that Harry Kane converted. It was a box-to-box performance of great energy from Shaw, but also one which revealed the creative qualities that Mauricio Pochettino discovered in him at Southampton.

It was bold of Shaw to hit back at Mourinho ahead of the game with Germany, declaring it was unfathomable his former manager had described his set-piece play as 'dramatically bad'. 'I'm used to him saying negative stuff about me now. His voice is obviously very big,' Shaw retorted. 'He likes to talk a lot about me.'

Shaw's vital contribution at Wembley against Germany was a true tale of redemption

Players are generally averse to being goaded like that ahead of a big game. They know controversial talk and headlines can leave them hostages to fortune. Shaw's tone was even more significant than his words. He spoke with the calm assurance of a player who believes in his game once again.

His importance to England on Saturday is mostly a consequence of manager Gareth Southgate being willing to keep an open mind about him. That seems to have left Shaw feeling there is a personal debt to repay.

'I have a few massive regrets, especially the mistakes that I made in the past with England and yes, of course, letting Gareth down,' Shaw said when he was recalled to the squad for the first time in three years, in March.

'I tried to keep in touch with him. I wanted to let him know that things had changed.'

They certainly have, and now England and Shaw are enjoying the benefits.

Default Re: Luke Shaw

The Luke Shaw we are seeing now is the same player who had the world at his feet when he joined Manchester United... there is personal vindication in the way his renaissance has driven England into the semi-finals

* Luke Shaw produced a fine England display in Jose Mourinho's new back yard
* It wasn't just the Shaw's unerring quality of his final ball which was significant
* The defensive side was also strong in the first half periods of slight jeopardy
* Yet his international renaissance is actually about a confluence of factors

Since Luke Shaw chose Jose Mourinho's new back yard to produce another signature display for England, perhaps this is the moment to consider his former Manchester United manager's thoughts on the full-back.

Shaw, Mourinho reflected a few years ago, was one of those players 'who cannot walk from the bed to the toilet without breaking a leg.'

Unfortunate and deeply insensitive, since he'd incurred a double break of that limb just two years earlier. Even when Shaw performed well, Mourinho declared: 'It was his body with my brain.'

There was huge personal vindication for Shaw in the way he drove England into the semi-final. Shaw chose Jose Mourinho's new back yard to produce another signature display for England

Considering Mourinho also decided Mohamed Salah was surplus to requirement and drove Kevin de Bruyne out of Chelsea, his personal judgement of a player hardly need detain us here.

Yet there was huge personal vindication for Shaw in the way he drove England into the semi-final on Saturday night, just as he had been integral to them reaching Rome.

It wasn't just the unerring quality of his final ball which was significant. The defensive component was also strong in the first half periods when a slight sense of jeopardy still stalked England.

It might already seem a distant memory, but it took the best of Shaw's awareness to head clear the cross that Viktor Tsyhankov speared across the England box, 15 minutes in, with Andriy Yarmelenko lurking to receive it.

Shaw's defensive component was also strong in the first half periods of slight jeopardy

But his performance will be best remembered for its attacking component in Rome

But his performance will be best remembered for its attacking component. It helped that he had Raheem Sterling – the game's outstanding player – on his flank.

Sterling's exquisite flick, with the inside of his right heel, which sent Shaw in to cross for Harry Kane's second goal went largely undetected. Yet the ball Shaw drifted up for Kane was unerring precise.

There was arced free kick of pace and accuracy from which Harry Maguire scored. The incisive low cross from which Jadon Sancho, spinning to shoot, might also have found the net. The weighted ball which Kane headed narrowly over.

The Luke Shaw we are seeing at this tournament is the same player who seemed to have the football world at his feet when he signed for Manchester United in 2014. He was a teenager who needed the right kind of manager, back then, though it was his professional misfortune to encounter Louis van Gaal and Mourinho instead.

It helped that he had Raheem Sterling on his flank. There was arced free kick of pace and accuracy from which Harry Maguire scored. The ball Shaw drifted up for Harry Kane for his second of the night was unerring precise

Both could be brutal. In conversations on this subject with van Gaal, there was sometimes a malign inference about Shaw's shape. Even Roy Hodgson, as England manager, contributed to the perennial pubic discussion of his fitness levels.

The double leg fracture, after a poorly timed tackle from PSV Eindhoven's H้ctor Moreno, didn't help and left him hospitalised in the Netherlands.

As Frank Lampard put it in the BBC studio on Saturday night, Shaw hasn't always been 'in the best of shape.' And as Alan Shearer added in the same conversation: It's about people believing in you and having the confidence in you.'

At United, that individual has been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who encourages where Mourinho confronts and saw Shaw become the club's Player of the Season in the last campaign.

Gareth Southgate was also willing to keep an open mind about him, despite Shaw dropping out of a number of England squads because he simply was not up to it physically.

Shaw seems to feel there is a personal debt to repay where the England manager is concerned. 'I've a few massive regrets, especially the mistakes that I made in the past with England and yes, of course, letting Gareth down,' he said when finally recalled to the squad for the first time in three years, in March.

His international renaissance is actually about a confluence of factors. Evading injury has enabled him to maintain full fitness, be motivated to train harder had and so find the kind confidence which his made his last two performance his best in an England shirt.

Shaw now has three assists for these Euros - second only to Switzerland's Steven Zuber - and the most from an Englishman at a tournament since David Beckham at Euro 2000. They don't just arrive from crosses. As he demonstrated here and against Germany, he is also comfortable cutting inside to use his intuitive sense of space to send teammates in.

Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer encourages Shaw where Mourinho confronts. Shaw seems to feel there is a personal debt to repay where the England manager Gareth Southgate is concerned

Beyond his use of the ball, it was his box-to-box running that struck you on Saturday night, given that we had not seen this kind of lung capacity for so long. It was Shaw, from full-back, who had the most progressive passes in the final third of any England player vs Ukraine (12).

The size of the contribution he had made was evident when he left the field after 65 minutes, as Southgate rested players with the game already won. Harry Maguire, Kane, Sterling and Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson all approached him to offer congratulations as he left. They knew what he had brought.

'I feel as if his performances have improved in every game,' Southgate reflected in the aftermath. 'It's understandable, because March was his first game with us for a few years. I think he now feels comfortable in this environment.'

Somewhere across the Eternal City, Jose Mourinho – who arrived on Friday as the new Roma manager in a private jet piloted by the club's owner – will have been surveying all this.

One of his first jobs may be to remove the graffiti that was left on Stadio Olimpico's concrete walls by one admiring supporter. 'SHAW WAS HERE', it read.

Manchester United 'are lining up a fresh contract offer for Luke Shaw in the coming months' to reward the left back for his stellar season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer... with Red Devils boss considering the defender 'a key man' in his Old Trafford setup

* Luke Shaw has shown impressive form for Manchester United and England
* Left back's resurgence could now see him rewarded with a contract extension
* Shaw's current deal at Old Trafford runs out in 2023, with option of a further year
* The 25-year-old is currently showing excellent form with England at Euro 2020

Manchester United are reportedly prepared to reward Luke Shaw for his dramatic turnaround in form with a new contract offer.

Shaw is currently starring at left-back with the England team, after producing an excellent display in Saturday night's 4-0 Euro 2020 quarter-final victory over Ukraine.

But his star performances for Gareth Southgate's side come off the back of an impressive 18 months for United, where under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he has won back his place at Old Trafford and emerge as a key player after struggling to adapt under previous manager Jose Mourinho.

United are not under significant pressure to reward Shaw with a new deal given he still has two years to run on his existing contract, with a further optional year that the club can trigger.

But according to Sky Sport Italia, the left back could be offered a new deal in the next few months as he is seen as a key part of a project to get Manchester United challenging for the Premier League title which they have now gone eight years without winning.

Shaw featured 47 times at left back under Solskjaer last term in all competitions providing six assists and scoring once.

The 25-year-old has won rave reviews for his performances with England this summer and was highly influential in the victory against Ukraine at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Shaw was influential in England's 4-0 victory over Ukraine by providing two assists

Shaw set up England's second goal where United team-mate Harry Maguire headed home at the start of the second half before then delivering a cross mere minutes later for Harry Kane to also divert in to put England 3-0 up and out of sight in the quarter-final.

Former England striker Alan Shearer believes having a manager that is now getting the best out of Shaw at club level, which has now been transformed to the international stage, has helped him come back into form.

Shaw was only called back into the England squad earlier this year following just two appearances in the previous six years.

'It's about people believing in you and having the confidence in you, Shearer told the BBC.

'If you have one bad game, it's not the be all and end all, the manager still trusts me. He has that now both with club and country.'

Luke Shaw has 'got everything to get to the top', admits Brazil legend Roberto Carlos... days after the Man United star's England team-mates nicknamed him 'Shawberto Carlos' following his superb display in quarter-final win over Ukraine

* Luke Shaw shone in the 4-0 quarter-final triumph against Ukraine in Rome
* He laid on two assists to ensure England made the semi-finals of Euro 2020
* That has led the likes of Harry Kane to give him the nickname 'Shawberto Carlos'
* It is in reference to ex-Brazil star Roberto Carlos, who is impressed with Shaw

Roberto Carlos has been impressed by England left-back Luke Shaw, with the Brazil great saying 'Shawberto Carlos' has everything it takes to go to the top.

Fresh from his best season in a Manchester United shirt, the 25-year-old has caught the eye during the Three Lions' run to Wednesday's Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark.

Shaw shone in the 4-0 quarter-final triumph against Ukraine in Rome, where he provided two assists in a complete display that led the nickname 'Shawberto Carlos' to gain traction on social media.

Even captain Harry Kane referred to him by the moniker after a match when his performance impressed ex-Brazil star Carlos, who put applause emojis in the comments of Shaw's Instagram post after the comprehensive victory.

Carlos told the PA news agency: 'You can see he's very motivated. He's really improving, his performance against Ukraine was very good.

'He's been an important part of this English team, along with all the others.

'He's been improving each game and I think he's got everything to get to the top. He's the left-back for England, that in itself says a lot.'

Shaw shone in the 4-0 quarter-final triumph against Ukraine in Rome, where he provided two assists. It has earnt him the name 'Shawberto Carlos' from the likes of Harry Kane and Declan Rice

Asked if he sees similarities between his game and the England left-back, Carlos said ahead of the semi-final against Denmark: 'I don't like comparing.

'It's two completely different periods in football. I had my time and now he's having his. Similarities I think could be that he has strength and the desire to win, just like I did.'

Carlos will be joining Shaw in Manchester in the coming months as the former Real Madrid left-back has signed up to play in Soccer Aid for UNICEF at the Etihad Stadium.

The money from this year's game will help the charity fightback against Covid-19 by helping to deliver two billion vaccines worldwide.

Carlos said: 'I'm always excited to play in Soccer Aid for UNICEF. It's great to see everyone, we have a good time and it's for a good cause, which makes it even better.'

Default Re: Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw insists Man United are NOT out of their rut yet despite salvaging a draw at Atalanta after smashing Spurs as he says 'we know we need to dig deep' ahead of derby with rivals City

* The Red Devils snatched a late draw against Atalanta in the Champions League
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side also beat Tottenham 3-0 to ease some pressure
* But Luke Shaw has insisted Manchester United are not yet out of their recent rut
* They host fierce rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon

Luke Shaw has insisted Manchester United are not yet out of their rut despite heading into Saturday's derby against Manchester City boosted by two positive results.

This time last week the Old Trafford giants were in the eye of a storm, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under intense pressure following a 5-0 home loss against rivals Liverpool.

United rallied to win 3-0 at Tottenham in the Premier League at the weekend before Cristiano Ronaldo's late goal rescued a 2-2 draw in the Champions League against Atalanta on Tuesday, but Shaw knows they cannot get comfortable despite the upturn in results.

He told beIN Sports: 'We have to keep this attitude. Just because we beat Spurs 3-0 and we picked up a point here, we can't put our heads down, we can't get comfortable.

'We can't think, "Ah, look, we've done it now, we've got out of our rut and everything's perfect, everything's fine". It's not. We know we need to dig deep. We know we're not in a good situation, we know what we've been doing hasn't been good enough.

'As a team we've talked about that inside the dressing room, so the games didn't come any easier, so we need to be ready for this one because it's at home and it's a big game.'

Luke Shaw has insisted Man United are not yet out of their rut despite a recent upturn in results

Shaw began the match in Bergamo, Italy, at wing-back before Raphael Varane's injury forced a change in formation and a switch back to full back, and the England defender claimed a draw away from home was a decent result.

He added: 'If you look at the group [United are top], it was an important point. Of course it's not what we wanted. We wanted three points.

'You have to look at the way the game went and the score towards the end, I think you would take a point in this situation. But of course we know we've still got a lot to improve on.

'You know the results the last couple of games have been a bit better, but we've still got work to do and we're in charge of our own group now.'

The Manchester derby provides the kind of stage Ronaldo thrives on. The 36-year-old was strongly linked with a controversial move to City in the summer before joining United, where he may still be finding his feet but has been scoring frequently.

'We kept going and, when we need a goal, when we need something good to happen, we have Cristiano,' Shaw concluded after Ronaldo's Bergamo brace took his tally for the season to nine.

'There's no doubt that when that ball dropped to him (at the end) that it was going in the back of the net.'

'I didn't feel that we were all there together': Luke Shaw questions the unity of Manchester United's players after their defeat by Wolves, as he admits he and his team-mates lacked 'intensity, aggression and motivation'

* Joao Moutinho's late goal handed Wolves victory against Manchester United
* It was a poor display by Man United with Wolves deserving of the three points
* Luke Shaw admitted that Manchester United didn't put Wolves under pressure
* He insisted players need to bring the intensity and more motivation to matches

Luke Shaw questioned the unity among his team-mates after Manchester United slumped to defeat at home to Wolves last night.

The manner of defeat will worry Ralf Rangnick just as much as losing his first game as interim manager, and Shaw hinted at a lack of togetherness in the squad.

United's team spirit has been called into question in recent weeks with Rangnick having to tell his players to improve their body language on the pitch.

Shaw said: 'I didn't feel that we were all there together. We felt like we were struggling.

Man United fell to their sixth defeat of the season with a disappointing display against Wolves. Luke Shaw said he didn't feel that United's players 'were all there together' during the game

'We weren't on the front foot, and they felt like they were in full control.

'I don't think you can put it on that (the new manager). We players have been here for a long time.

'You look at our squad, you look at our team, and we have unbelievable quality. Sometimes quality isn't enough.

'We need to bring the intensity. We need to be more aggressive and we need to bring more motivation.

'Inside the dressing room we know what we want but when we step out on that pitch we need to give 100 per cent.

'Even from the first minute we didn't go for them.

'I think that time's critical where you've got to put your stamp on the game, especially with 75,000 people roaring behind us.'

Shaw admitted that despite the talents at United sometimes 'quality is not enough' to win. It was the first defeat that Ralf Rangnick has suffered as interim boss at Old Trafford

Shaw exonerated Phil Jones from blame after the centre back impressed on his first appearance for two years.

'One thing I will say is Phil Jones should be proud of himself,' added Shaw.

'He's been criticised for a number of years constantly. He got his chance tonight and he was exceptional.

'I just want to say to Phil Jones, keep going – but as a team we need to be better.'

Luke Shaw admits he risks being branded 'STUPID' as he claims Man United have 'the belief and confidence' they could go all the way and WIN the Champions League ahead of last-16 clash with Atletico Madrid

* Luke Shaw believes Manchester United can win the Champions League this year
* The left back says some will think he's 'stupid' for making the bold prediction
* Ralf Rangnick's have endured a tough run of form of late in the Premier League
* But the Red Devils are still in the Champions League and are in the last-16
* And Shaw says United have the belief they can win the whole thing this season

Luke Shaw has admitted he runs the risk of being branded as 'stupid' for believing that Manchester United can win the Champions League this season.

The Red Devils have endured a very rocky season up until this point, with Ralf Rangnick's side out of the title race as well as the FA Cup while the Champions League remains to be their only chance of winning silverware this season.

A poor run of form domestically somewhat subsided on Tuesday night when the Red Devils beat 10-man Brighton at home, with Cristiano Ronaldo ending his six-game goalless streak with a thumping effort at Old Trafford.

And ahead of their last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid next week, Shaw has insisted that he and his United team-mates have the belief and confidence to become European champions – even though he's aware that the odds are stacked heavily against them.

'This is the crunch time of the season and it is very important in the league to get some momentum,' Shaw said, as reported by The Mirror. 'As a team we believe we can win the Champions League.

'Not many people on the outside will think it and some will think I'm stupid for saying that but we have that belief and confidence that we can win it.

'I'm sure everyone in this dressing room – the players the staff and the management – all have that belief that we can. Now we need to pick some momentum up, get results and keep playing well.'

Luke Shaw believes Manchester United can win the Champions League this season. Shaw says some will think he's 'stupid' for making the prediction, given United's poor form. The left back believes United are capable of dethroning Chelsea as the champions of Europe

Ahead of next week's first leg against Atletico, United needed to stop the rot, especially with a crunch clash against Leeds United coming up at the weekend.

They did so against the Seagulls having failed to win any of its last three games despite taking the lead each time - twice in the league, against Burnley and Southampton, and in getting eliminated from the FA Cup by second-tier Middlesbrough.

And boss Rangnick was left less than impressed by his side's performance.

'First half was Mr. Hyde, second half Dr. Jekyll,' United manager Ralf Rangnick said, 'and for a change it (the result) was different.'

Helping United's cause against Brighton at Old Trafford was visiting defender Lewis Dunk getting sent off three minutes after Ronaldo's goal for a professional foul, bringing down Anthony Elanga as the winger was through on goal. Dunk was initially shown a yellow card but it turned to a red after a video review.

Ahead of next week's first leg against Atletico, United needed to stop the rot, especially with a crunch clash against Leeds United coming up at the weekend.

Default Re: Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw hints at unhappiness at Manchester United amid a difficult season at Old Trafford as the left-back reveals he is enjoying 'playing with a smile' and 'feeling wanted' with England after goal against Switzerland

* Luke Shaw netted the equaliser against Switzerland at Wembley on Saturday
* He addressed the media afterwards as to why he is enjoying life with England
* Shaw hinted that he is enjoying England duty more than Manchester United

Luke Shaw made the frank admission he is enjoying playing more for England than Manchester United after he played a key role in the win over Switzerland.

The left back, who has not played for his club since a 0-0 draw with Watford on February 26, was in the right place at the right time to score a game-changing equaliser at Wembley, as England won 2-1; Harry Kane moved level with Sir Bobby Charlton on 49 goals when converting a late penalty.

Shaw has never been afraid to speak his mind on international duty and, in an interview with Sky Sports, he was candid about the difficulties he has faced at Old Trafford over the course of the campaign and admitted that being away with England was liberating.

'The environment here that Gareth (Southgate) creates, you always enjoy it,' said Shaw.

Luke Shaw scored for England to equalise against Switzerland as they went on to win 2-1. Shaw suggested it is more fun playing for England than it is right now for Manchester United. Shaw explained that he is able to play with a smile on his face when he is with the Three Lions

'When I come here it's about enjoyment and playing games with a smile on my face.

'We all love playing for our country and when we're here we're all focused on what's happening here.'

Asked whether he needed to be happy to play well, Shaw replied: 'I think everyone does.

'It's always important to feel like you're wanted and especially here I always feel that. I'm not saying I don't at United, but especially here, the way things are, I feel wanted and I enjoy my football.

'A big part of football is the enjoyment and, of course, it's hard to enjoy when we're losing and not playing well at club level. We have to face that.

'This season hasn't been good enough at all and it's hard to enjoy. We've got a lot to improve but right now we're here at England. My focus is on that.'

It prompted Jamie Redknapp, who was working in the studio, to say: 'You can't underestimate the pressure players are under when they play for these clubs. If you can't handle it, you're probably not the best fit for these types of clubs.

'You're going to get stick off 50,000 people and you have to be able to accept it.

'Of course you feel his pain when a player speaks so honestly like that, but when you want to be a footballer at 10, 11 years of age you have to accept you'll get criticised.

Manchester United are having a tricky season and Shaw (middle) has opened up honestly on it. The left back added that is important to 'feel wanted' in comments that will divide supporters

'It's not always going to be a bed of roses. He spoke very openly there – he feels a lot more comfortable playing for England.'

Southgate gave debuts to Southampton's Kyle Walker-Peters, Crystal Palace pair Marc Guehi and Tyrick Mitchell, as well as handing a first start to Connor Gallagher. It means he has used 100 players during his time in charge of England and the victory extended an unbeaten run outside of penalty shootouts to 21 games.

On the 100 players milestone, Southgate said: 'I'm not sure whether that is a good or bad thing but we have never turned down an opportunity to give players a chance and tried to look at the future when we make those decisions.

'I thought Marc did exactly what I've seen him do.

'I watched him for Crystal Palace and he can go under the radar because he rarely gets out of position and is so calm, so you don't see lunging tackles and eye-catching moments.

'He played with that discipline and assuredness. He was excellent.'

Default Re: Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw aims a sly dig at Erik ten Hag's predecessors, claiming the new boss' 'structure' is something Man United 'haven't had for quite a while'... as he praises the club's 'top, top manager' ahead of friendly with rivals Liverpool

* Man United defender Luke Shaw has praised new boss Erik ten Hag's 'structure'
* He hinted organisation wasn't there under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Ralf Rangnick
* Club's pre-season preparations intensify on Tuesday with Liverpool friendly
* Ten Hag was appointed due to his philosophy and tactical nous on the sidelines

Luke Shaw has heaped praise on new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag and says the structure he is trying to implement is something the club 'haven't had for quite a while'.

The 52-year-old has been putting his new squad through their paces over the last fortnight, but their preparations for the new season will intensify when they face Liverpool today.

Ten Hag is believed to have got a tune out of the United squad through his work on the training ground, having been appointed by the club's hierarchy in May due to his clear attacking philosophy which he demonstrated with Ajax.

Tactical nous was something Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick were questioned over in United's thoroughly underwhelming campaign in 2021-22.

And speaking in Thailand ahead of the friendly against Jurgen Klopp's men, Shaw appeared to take a dig at United's previous two bosses, insisting the structure ten Hag wants to play with is something United did not have last season.

'It's clear that he's a top, top manager. He has a structure to play the way he wants us to play,' said Shaw in quotes carried by The Metro.

'We haven't had that for quite a while, and it was clear to see last season, which was extremely disappointing.

Left-back Luke Shaw (right) has heaped praise on new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag. Shaw described the Dutchman as a 'top, top manager' and hailed the structure he is building

'We have to bounce back [from last season] and he has been working us extremely hard, but I think we need it.

'We're really looking forward to this season because I know it's going to be much better than the last one.'

United endured a difficult campaign last time out, finishing sixth in the Premier League and extending their run without a trophy to five seasons.

Their first game under their new boss in a friendly in Bangkok could, however, be hindered by the absence of centre-back duo Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire.

The Red Devils held two sessions on Monday with the first at the STB Academy before moving on to the Rajamangala Stadium, the venue for the friendly, with Varane missing entirely from the latter one.

The 29-year-old did train with the team on Monday morning but was absent for the open session which was conducted in front of a few thousand fans.

Ten Hag's problems were compounded with Maguire not taking part in team training too.

Unlike Varane, the captain was present at the Rajamangala Stadium but trained away from the rest of the squad.

Default Re: Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw warns Manchester United's Premier League rivals that they have already made a 'BIG improvement' under new manager Erik ten Hag... and insists there is 'much more to come' from the Red Devils after their promising start to pre-season

* Manchester United have won their opening two pre-season games comfortably
* Luke Shaw feels the team have clearly improved under new boss Erik ten Hag
* The full-back believes there is a lot more to come from the side this season
* United are trying to bounce back from their dismal 2021-22 campaign

Luke Shaw feels Manchester United have already made a 'big improvement' under new manager Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils have made a very impressive start to pre-season under the Dutchman, picking up convincing wins against Liverpool and Melbourne Victory.

And Shaw thinks there have already been positive signs, as the team look to bounce back from their disastrous 2021-22 campaign when they finished down in sixth.

'We can't be satisfied anymore with how the team had been going,' Shaw told Manchester United's official website.

'It's not where the club should be and we know the levels have had to take a massive step in terms of higher intensity and what we're supposed to be doing and I think from the start of the last two weeks, especially in training, it's definitely a big improvement.

'Even in the games, I think you could see things that probably you haven't seen before, so I think there are things to look forward to.

'The manager knows what the team needs, he has his own style and how he wants to manage and all the players have really taken it on board.'

Shaw has played under seven different managers at Old Trafford, including interim coaches.

He has revealed that ten Hag likes to have his say in training, and is not afraid to call out players if they don't meet his standards.

'He's very hands-on and he takes a lot of the sessions. He's involved a lot and if he sees people aren't hitting the standards that he wants in training, he'll make sure they know.

Manchester United have scored four goals in both their pre-season matches so far. Luke Shaw is pleased with how the team have started pre-season under Erik ten Hag. Shaw has revealed that ten Hag likes to take a 'hands-on' approach in training sessions

'I think that's good, because he keeps the standards high. There's still much more to come from us and this is only the start,' Shaw added.

Shaw endured a difficult 2021-22 season as he featured in just 20 league games due to a combination of injuries and loss of form.

He has conceded that he was frustrated with how his campaign played out, but he is now looking forward to making a 'fresh start' under ten Hag.

He continued: 'Last season was very disappointing, not just as a team but also individually for me.

'It wasn't what people expect or what I expect and I think this season is another fresh start.

'Now it's time for me to keep consistency and keep higher levels of performance week in, week out which I've spoken to the manager about already and that's what he wants.'
