U18S: UNITED 2 BLACKBURN ROVERS 1

United’s Under-18s launched our Premier League North campaign with a 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers at The Cliff on Saturday lunchtime.

Two goals from Joe Hugill, one in each half, put United into what appeared to be a comfortable lead but a late goal from the Lancashire lads provided the contest with something of a slightly nervy ending.

Neil Ryan’s lads could scarcely have been given a sterner test for our season’s curtain-raiser. The clubs have been locking horns at this level since Lancashire League days and it is invariably one of those ‘no quarter asked, no quarter given’ occasions.

And that could barely have been better illustrated when, within the opening minute, Rovers defender Lennie Cirino was shown the yellow card after scything down United’s French youngster Noam Emeran.

Needless to say, it was a lively start to the game, and the season, for United and but for the intervention of midfielder Jared Harlock the Reds could have been a goal up early on through Rhys Bennett’s header. It looked a certain goal for the Manchester-born defender but Harlock came to his side's rescue, heading the ball against the crossbar and away to safety.

Bennett, who has been at United since he was a tiddler, was involved again a little later when he was cautioned by the referee after blocking the progress of Rovers forward Alex Baker.

United were having the better of the attacking action and shortly before the half-hour mark had been reached we claimed our reward.

Skipper Martin Svidersky did well to win the ball in midfield and wasted no time in passing to Hugill, who took a couple of steps forward before unleashing a truly venomous shot that gave the Rovers keeper little chance of seeing it let alone saving it.

It was a great start to season for the former Sunderland striker and with a slight adjustment to his direction-finder he could have been celebrating a hat-trick soon after the interval.

The opening stages of the second half pretty well mirrored the earlier spell, with United still enjoying the bulk of possession and scoring opportunities.

Bennett was unlucky again, in the 63rd minute, when he found the net with a header but his effort was scrubbed out when the referee spotted that the ball had struck his arm before crossing the line.

It increasingly appeared that it was going to be United’s day and when Hugill cracked home his second goal of his debut, 16 minutes from the close, the points indeed looked to be secured.

United’s new goalkeeper Radek Vitek had enjoyed a reasonably comfortable first game for the club, but he wasn’t found wanting in the closing minutes when he made two tremendous saves to deny the Rovers forwards.

But even he couldn’t prevent Rovers from getting a late boost when Brandon Lonsdale scored for the visitors with two minutes remaining. It mattered little in the end though as the Reds held out for a deserved opening win.

United: Vitek; Hughes, Bennett, Hardley, Pye; Svidersky (c), Hansen-Aaroen (Hoogewerf 63), Savage; Wellens (Forson 78), Hugill, Emeran (Mejia 72).

Subs not used: Fernandez, Guadagno

Goals: (Hugill 29, 74)

UNITED YOUNGSTERS HIT FIVE PAST BURNLEY

Manchester United’s Under-18s swept to an impressive victory over Burnley at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday. Omari Forson claimed two of the goals with Alvaro Fernandez, Mateo Mejia and Noam Emeran also scoring in a 5-1 win.

It completed an early season double over Lancashire neighbours Burnley and Blackburn Rovers, who were beaten at The Cliff on the opening day of the campaign.

Beautiful blue skies with odd fluffy cloud gave the setting a mid-summer look but it was deceptive because the temperature was more like something akin to mid-winter. That didn’t, of course, bother the teams unduly as they went about their work in a suitably brisk fashion. Burnley were a team in hurry and their very first attack looked promising but Reds keeper Johan Guadagno was alert and smothered the threat.

United were quick to pick up the gauntlet and, in the eighth minut,e Forson took a short pass from Dillon Hoogewerf before beating Burnley keeper Sam Waller with a fierce drive.

The Reds’ confidence grew steadily following the that early breakthrough and we proceeded to keep the visitors’ defence and keeper Waller well occupied.

Waller was Burnley’s first-half top performer, making a string of excellent saves to ensure that his goal wasn’t breached again before the break.

The Clarets did have their moments and, in the 28th minute, Corey Brennan spotted Guadagno off his line and attempted an audacious long-ranger from the edge of the centre-circle but the United keeper stretched to comfortably collect the ball.

The second half largely belonged to United and we increased the lead, in the 65th minute courtesy of Fernandez’s ferocious strike, his first since signing from Real Madrid in the summer.

Forson grabbed his second goal of the game after 76 minutes, slamming the ball into the top corner, and then Burnley pulled one back, five minutes later, with a header from Kade Ratchford.

Just a minute from time, Mejia raised United’s total to four with a prodded finish after being played through by Dutchman Hoogewerf.

In the dying seconds, Burnley's Jack Leckie tugged Hoogewerf as he was homing in on goal and received a red card. From the free-kick, Emeran put the icing on the cake with a guided missile that deflected past a wrong-footed Waller.

United: Guadagno; Hughes (Dodgson 80), Bennett, Hardley, Fernandez; Hansen-Aarøen (Iqbal 69), Savage; Hoogewerf, Forson, Emeran; Mejia.

Substitutes: Mee, Pye, Gallagher-Allison.

Scorers: Forson 8,75 Fernandez 64, Mejia 89, Emeran 92) | Ratchford 81

UNITED UNDER-18S WIN A TIGHT ONE AT WOLVES

Manchester United's Under-18s claimed a different kind of win to last weekend's seven-goal thriller, eventually beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 away.

Charlie McNeil’s lone second-half goal at the Sir Jack Hayward Training Centre in the West Midlands was just enough to extend the Reds' winning streak to seven league games.

This was never an easy victory for Neil Ryan’s league leaders, without the flair and goal guts of recent weeks, but it was a good professional performance which proved the young Reds can survive and prosper when the going gets tough.

United, of course, were hoping to build on an impressive sequence of six straight league wins, the latest being that titanic 4-3 success over Liverpool seven days before at the Aon Training Complex.

Wolves were also protecting a rich seam of five wins on the bounce which had helped to hoist them into third place in the table, just three points behind Ryan's Reds at the summit.

It therefore came as no surprise that this meeting from the outset was a tight and cagey affair with United, perhaps, marginally edging it in terms of possession but in front of goal there was little or nothing to separate the teams.

The Reds were spending plenty of time in Wanderers’ half of the field but a combination of wild shooting, missed chances and a determined and solid home defence meant free-scoring United – who had registered 19 goals in the previous six games – were unable to increase that commendable total before the interval.

Whilst the visitors may have manufactured the best of the goalscoring opportunities, it was the home side who should have been holding a one-goal lead at the break. Wolves winger Lee Harkin looked odds on to put his side in front, in the 37th minute, when he raced up field with Rhys Bennett in pursuit but he couldn’t complete the task as his shot flew past Dermot Mee’s left-hand post.

The second half, at least for the opening fifteen minutes, produced a decent replica of the first, but United continued to carry the bigger threat and in the 62nd minute, a route through the Wolves’ defence was finally discovered.

Reds full-back Marc Jurado, having joined his team's attack, initiated the move before finding Charlie Wellens, who was close to the dead-ball line. Space was at a premium but the midfielder made the most of what was available and slid the ball along the line to where McNeil was lurking. The former Manchester City striker had plenty of company in the shape of four gold-shirted defenders but with a little shimmy he lashed his shot past Wolves’ keeper Joe Young.

McNeil was given a great chance to grab his second goal of the game and provide his side with a more comfortable cushion but his shot, which had to be struck first time, flew wide after Wellens’ blast had thumped against the post.

The slender 1-0 lead looked anything but decisive but the Reds continued to operate as a compact unit and ultimately it was just sufficient to preserve the winning sequence.

MATCH DETAILS

Mee; Jurado, Bennett, Hardley, Hughes; Svidersky, Savage; Wellens (Hoogewerf 65), Iqbal, Emeran (Garnacho 82); McNeill (Hansen 74).
