TEN former Manchester United stars named on 23-man shortlist to select next six members of new Premier League Hall of Fame... but there's NO room for Ryan Giggs amid impending court case

* Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry were announced as the 'inaugural inductees'
* Now fans can vote for six further stars to join them from a 23-man shortlist
* The list is dominated by players representing Manchester United and Arsenal
* Ryan Giggs is thought to have missed the list due to his impending court case
* The Wales manager is due in court after he was charged with three offences in which he has denied

The Premier League have revealed a 23-man shortlist for fans to vote on who should be inducted into the all-new Hall of Fame - though that list doesn't include Ryan Giggs amid his impending court case.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and Blackburn and Newcastle icon Alan Shearer were the initial entries, while 23 further candidates were announced.

But there was no slot for former Manchester United winger Giggs, who is the most decorated player in the competition’s history, having won the title 13 times.

David Beckham and Paul Scholes are among ten former Manchester United players on the shortlist

Ryan Giggs though has not been included in the shortlist amid his impending court case

Later this week the 47-year-old will appear in court charged with assaulting two women and ‘controlling or coercive behaviour’.

He is currently Wales manager but will not be taking charge of the national team at this summer’s European Championship, with Robert Page put in temporary control.

Giggs has protested his innocence, said he will plead not guilty in court and added that he looks forward to clearing his name. He is due at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Henry is considered one of the finest players to grace the competition. He won two titles at Arsenal and was a key member of the 2003-04 ‘Invincibles’ squad.

Shearer is the top scorer in Premier League history with 260 goals. He won the title with Blackburn in 1994-95 and became a prolific striker for boyhood club Newcastle.

The shortlist is dominated by ten Manchester United players including Roy Keane, David Beckham and Paul Scholes - though there was no place for Giggs.

Other former Manchester United stars to be included were Eric Cantona, Andy Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Peter Schmeichel, Robin Van Persie, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Owen.

Arsenal are also heavily represented in the list with seven representatives including Van Persie, Ian Wright, Patrick Vieira, Tony Adams, Dennis Bergkamp, Sol Campbell and Gunner turned Chelsea star Ashley Cole.

As well as Ashley Cole, Chelsea also have John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba included in the list.

90s Premier League legends Eric Cantona, Les Ferdinand and Ian Wright have also made the list

Liverpool have three representatives including Owen, Steven Gerrard and Robbie Fowler.

Also included in the list are Southampton legend Matthew Le Tissier and former Newcastle and Tottenham striker Les Ferdinand.

The first two inductees were teased on social media in a video last week, in which the likes of Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright gave clues as to who could be taking the honour.

One of the players was described as 'lethal, unmarkable at times' and a 'devastating phenomenon', while the other, according to former Liverpool man Jamie Carragher, was 'an absolute nightmare to play against'.

In announcing Shearer and Henry, the Premier League's official account introduced the pair as: 'Two centre-forwards, both gifted with natural skill and talent who have written their names in Premier League history.'

Fans can vote for the next six inductees on the Premier League's official website and on the official Premier League app until May 9.

Ryan Giggs 'shocked' by late Premier League Hall of Fame snub... with Thierry Henry 'drafted in at the last minute' to join Alan Shearer, before Welshman also missed out on 23-man shortlist to pick next six inductees amid impending court case

* Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry were named in the Premier League Hall of Fame
* Ryan Giggs was not chosen despite winning the top-flight title 13 times
* Last week, Wales manager Giggs was charged with three offences including assaulting two women
* The ex-Manchester United winger is reportedly livid about this week's snub
* Giggs was in line to be inducted this week instead of Henry, according to reports

Ryan Giggs is said to be shocked about his Premier League Hall of fame snub on Monday as the Welshman was set to be inducted into the group over Thierry Henry, according to reports.

The former Manchester United winger was charged with assaulting two women and ‘controlling or coercive behaviour’ last week and will appear in court later this week. Giggs was suspended from his role as Wales manager ahead of Euro 2020 amid the court case. The 47-year-old has denied the charges.

Meanwhile, Henry was one of two Premier League players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame early on Monday alongside all-time record goalscorer Alan Shearer, formerly of Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers.

But according to the Daily Mirror, it was planned for Giggs to be named ahead of Henry in the list but the former Arsenal striker was drafted in at the last minute - with the ex-United star livid about being left out amid his impending court case.

Giggs was also left out of the 23-man shortlist for the remaining candidates to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Fans will vote on the other six players to be included in the all-star line-up.

Ten other Manchester United players were included, including Roy Keane, David Beckham and Paul Scholes - but there was no space for Giggs.

Giggs was charged with assaulting two women and controlling or coercive actions last week. Giggs had won the league 13 times but was snubbed from the 23-man Hall of Fame shortlist

The 47-year-old has won the Premier League title 13 times, more than any other player in the competition's history - and made 672 appearances in England's top-flight for United.

Ex-Arsenal striker Henry is considered one of the finest players to grace the competition. He won two titles with the Gunners and was a key member of the 2003-04 ‘Invincibles’ squad.

The Frenchman scored 174 goals over two separate spells at Arsenal last just over eight years, which is more than Giggs' total of 114.

Shearer is the top scorer in Premier League history with 260 goals. He won the title with Blackburn in 1994-95 and became a prolific striker for boyhood club Newcastle.

Other former Manchester United stars to be included were Eric Cantona, Andy Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Peter Schmeichel, Robin Van Persie, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Owen.

Premier League chiefs 'ready to roll over current TV deal worth £1.5bn a year into next season' with 'uncertainty over return of mass crowds complicating talks with broadcasters over package'

* Talks have reportedly been held to roll over the current Premier League TV deal
* The announcement over the rights from 2022-23 would have been made by now
* As a result of uncertainty, The Mirror claims the deal will roll over by 12 months
* The same report has also revealed that TV companies are open to the suggestion

Premier League chiefs are ready to keep their current big-money TV deal rolling into next season with negotiations on a new long-term contract from 2022-23 to be put on hold, according to reports.

Top-flight fixtures are currently shared between Sky, BT Sport and Amazon Prime - while the BBC has also shown live games during the pandemic - and the announcement of rights from 2022-23 would typically have been revealed by this point.

But as a result of the uncertainty surrounding the return of large crowds due to the relaxing of lockdown measures, The Mirror claim talks have already been held to extend the terms in place at this point for another 12 months.

Premier League chiefs are in discussions over rolling over the current TV deal into next season. Top-flight fixtures are typically screened via giants Sky, BT Sport, the BBC and Amazon Prime

The coronavirus pandemic initially placed talks over the rights on hold but, with the new term fast approaching, preparations are now underway to ensure a smooth transition for broadcasters.

The current Premier League TV deal is worth £1.5billion a year.

There is believed to have been uncertainty over the nature of the package companies would be splashing out for.

Due to the fluid nature of the Covid-19 crisis, there will be a rough expectancy for when bigger numbers will return to games, but the date is far from set in concrete.

Negotiations, therefore, are said to be based around keeping the current deal with a view to restarting discussions over a long-term solution at the turn of the year.

The Mirror revealed that the Premier League have declined to comment on the suggestions - but insist that the TV companies are open to the concept.

It has been explained in the same report that the Government would be required to sanction a 'private sale'.

This type of transaction would see the deal brokered between the existing broadcasters instead of extending it for any potential competition.

The pandemic and uncertainty over the return of crowds has led to hesitancy from broadcasters over the potential package. The rights package for the Premier League took a 10 per cent drop, to £4.6bn, up until 2022

The deal would then be structured to allow Sky Sports, BT Sport and Amazon to effectively keep the same positions thrashed out in 2018, the source goes on to add.

The rights packages took a 10 per cent tumble, down to £4.6billion, for three seasons up until 2022.

Sky splashed out an eye-watering £3.75bn to screen 128 games per season, while BT spent £975million to be able to broadcast 52 fixtures.

Amazon were able to pounce and secure the rights for 20 more matches a season.

Sportsmail revealed last month, meanwhile, that the Premier League's TV rights packages have skyrocketed in value by almost 4,000 per cent since the first live clash was shown in 1992.

The permissions sold to UK and overseas broadcasters made £232m almost three decades ago, while the latest sales generated £9.1bn - a rise of 3,822 per cent.

Premier League clubs report record pre-tax loss of almost £1BILLION for last season as the financial impact of playing matches behind closed doors due to Covid is revealed

* Covid restrictions saw Premier League clubs report a first ever fall in revenue
* Cumulative pre-tax loss of almost £1bn was the largest in the league's history
* It was almost five times the previous season's modest £200m figure

Coronavirus restrictions saw Premier League clubs report a fall in revenue for the first time, according to new figures from finance company Deloitte for the 2019-20 season.

The lack of matchday spectators coupled with a rebate and delay affecting some broadcast income saw revenue fall around 13 per cent, although the 20 top-flight clubs still brought in a combined £4.5billion.

A cumulative pre-tax loss of almost £1bn was also the largest in Premier League history and almost five times the previous season's £200m figure as the true financial cost of the pandemic becomes clear.

Coronavirus restrictions saw Premier League clubs report a fall in revenue for the first time, according to new figures from finance company Deloitte

Dan Jones of Deloitte's sports business group said: 'The decrease in revenue in the 2019-20 season is, unsurprisingly, down to the global economic and social disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and will continue to have a heavy impact on the 2020-21 season's financial results when available.

'The absence of fans, postponement of matches and rebates to broadcasters had a significant impact on the revenue clubs have been able to generate.

'The full financial impact of the pandemic on the Premier League will depend on the timing of the return of fans to stadia in significant numbers and the ability of clubs to maintain and develop their commercial relationships, in particular at a time when many other industries are suffering.

Stadiums were left bare, meaning many sides had huge cuts to their revenue streams. The absence of fans, postponement of matches and rebates to broadcasters had a significant impact on the revenue clubs have been able to generate

'Matchday operations are a cornerstone of a club's business model and fans' absence will be more fully reflected in the financial results of the 2020-21 financial year.

'Once fans are able to return in full, hopefully during the 2021/22 season, Premier League clubs have the potential to again return to record revenue levels.'

The renewal of the league's broadcasting deals will contribute to that, but, in the meantime, player wages jumped to occupy 72 per cent of club revenue in 2019-20.

That was a consequence of the fall in income, as wages increased just three per cent in raw terms.

Deloitte's Tim Bridge said: 'In this extraordinary year it is difficult to read too much in to whether this marks a shift in clubs' approach to wage spending, or one-off elements such as the absence of end-of-season bonuses, which will have been deferred to the next financial year, or the impact of temporary wage cuts or deferrals.

'With wages always representing the largest cost for football clubs we will watch with interest in years to come to understand whether this financial shock will come to be seen as having caused a change in approach and greater control over wage expenditure.'

PREMIER LEAGUE FIXTURES: Chelsea face a NIGHTMARE start while Man United host Leeds, Liverpool go to Norwich and champions City travel to Spurs on huge opening weekend

* Tottenham host Man City on the opening day of 2021-22 Premier League season
* Chelsea face nightmare start, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs away in first five
* United don't face a top-six rival until October 16, with favourable seven to start
* Eye-catching New Year's Day sees Arsenal vs Man City and Chelsea vs Liverpool

Tottenham will host champions Man City on a mouthwatering opening weekend of the new Premier League season, while Thomas Tuchel faces a nightmare start to his first full campaign in charge of Chelsea, with trips to three 'Big Six' rivals in the first five matches.

On a huge first round of fixtures in mid-August, City's trip to north London is the stand-out game - and the match could even see Harry Kane face Spurs in his first game for City should his rumoured summer move come to fruition.

Elsewhere on the opening weekend, Manchester United host Leeds, Liverpool travel to newly-promoted Norwich and Chelsea host a London derby against Crystal Palace.

Leeds travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on the opening weekend of 2021-22. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be delighted, with United not facing a top-six rival until October 16

But it's not their opening game Tuchel will be most concerned about, with visits to Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham coming in the first five matches of the season, before the Blues host champions City in their sixth game.

It is a far easier start for Manchester United, meanwhile, with Leeds, Southampton, Wolves, Newcastle, West Ham, Aston Villa and Everton ahead of the first international break of the season.

In fact, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side don't face a top-six rival until October 16 when they travel to Leicester, before hosting Liverpool the following weekend.

On the final day of the season, Chelsea, Leicester, Liverpool and Manchester City will all enjoy home advantage, facing Watford, Southampton, Wolves and Aston Villa respectively.

Fans of the three promoted teams - Norwich, Watford and Brentford - will of course be desperate to find out who they play on the opening weekend of their return to the Premier League, and it is a huge welcome back for the Championship champions.

The Canaries welcome Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool to Carrow Road, looking to secure a first victory over the Merseyside giants since April 1994.

Quote:
2021-22 OPENING WEEKEND FIXTURES

Brentford v Arsenal

Burnley v Brighton

Chelsea v Crystal Palace

Everton v Southampton

Leicester City v Wolverhampton

Manchester United v Leeds United

Newcastle United v West Ham United

Norwich City v Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City

Watford v Aston Villa

City travel to Tottenham on the opening day - and could it be Harry Kane against his old club?

Watford, meanwhile, host Aston Villa and Brentford have two immediate London derbies to look forward to with Arsenal at home and Palace away their first two.

Bees fans will also be keeping a keen eye on their fixture dates against Chelsea, with the two west London derbies coming on October 16 at Brentford, and April 2 at Stamford Bridge.

On the subject of derbies, the first Manchester clash of the season comes at Old Trafford on November 6, while the reverse fixture at City comes on March 5.

In north London, Spurs and Arsenal fans will be anticipating their rivalry once more, with September 25 and January 15 the two dates to look out for, the former at the Emirates and the latter at Tottenham.

In fact, January 15 - the 22nd matchday of the season - is set to be one of the most exciting, with the north London derby also joined by Manchester City vs Chelsea, and Palace also travel to their rivals Brighton on the south coast.

Boxing Day regularly throws up some eye-catching fixtures and this year is no different, with big-six rivals Manchester City and Leicester facing off at the Etihad, while Liverpool host Leeds and Manchester United are away at Newcastle.

Just two days later, Leicester's tough Christmas run continues as they host Liverpool, with Chelsea-Brighton and Brentford-Man City the other picks.

On New Year's Day there is a mouthwatering set of fixtures as Arsenal host Manchester City and Liverpool travel to Chelsea, while Manchester United host Wolves to complete a nightmare few days for the Midlands side.

New boss Bruno Lage will not be overly excited for their tough Christmas fixtures, which see them face Chelsea, Watford, Arsenal and Manchester United in the space of 14 days.
