Liverpool Reveal 2013-2014 Away Kit Design



Liverpool F.C. are getting a brand-new look for when they step away from Anfield. But for those who have been following the Reds for quite a while, this "new" look should feel like a contemporary spin on a classic tale.

In a press release put out on the club's official website, Liverpool introduced the new kits to the public for the first time. Adorning the traditional red, white and black color scheme, Warrior Sports—which took over as Adidas' kit provider last year—incorporated plenty of old-school looks to the new uniform.

As noted in the press release, one of the most notable additions is black and red diamond print at the midriff section of the jersey. That's a nod to a similar pattern found from 1989 to 1991, a period that saw Liverpool finish no worse than second in England's Division I—their pre-Premier League home.



The jersey also borrows from the 1981 kit's neckline as well.

Tuesday's announcement comes just over a month after Liverpool revealed their new home kit for the 2013-14 season. That kit, as noted by Dan Ripley of the Daily Mail, also borrowed heavily from the past, in that case the 1984 home look.

While Warrior Sports undoubtedly found inspiration in the design and went in that direction accordingly, Liverpool fans have to be hoping this blast-from-the-past look sparks a similar result on the pitch.

Liverpool wrapped up their 2012-13 Premier League season on May 19 with a 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers. The victory finalized the Reds' seasonal point total at 61, good for seventh place in the Premiership table.



Once one of England's most dominant clubs, 2012-13 was yet another shrug-worthy finish for the folks at Anfield. Liverpool have finished outside the top five in the table in every season since 2008-09's scintillating second-place run, and this marked the third year out of four they have not won any English championships.

By returning to kits styled similarly to a prouder time—Liverpool were once the most dominant fixture in Division I through the 1970s and 1980s—the club could be looking to evoke nostalgia from its fans. And, of course, there is the financial windfall that comes along with selling brand-new replica kits to one of the world's proudest fanbases.

Either way, Tuesday continued the dawning of a new era for Liverpool. Whether that translates to on-field success remains to be seen.
