Default Re: Samuel Luke "Sam" Johnstone

JOHNSTONE’S DEVELOPMENT SHOULD BE A SOURCE OF PRIDE FOR UNITED

Every Manchester United Academy player hopes to one day step up and become a regular feature in the first team.

Seven of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s current senior side know what it to takes to achieve just that, having progressed through our various youth ranks.

Yet unfortunately, the vast majority of those who represent our under-age sides will never experience the thrill of wearing the famous red jersey in front of booming Old Trafford.

Not that there is any shame in that and the likes of Dwight McNeil, Danny Drinkwater and Oliver Norwood have gone on to have excellent careers despite never playing any first-team minutes at United.

Meanwhile, Jonny Evans, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverly always know, like all returning Academy graduates, that they’re due for a warm reception from the Old Trafford faithful when next visiting the Theatre of Dreams.

Sadly, it was a luxury that Sam Johnstone wasn’t afforded when West Bromwich Albion came to town earlier this season, given the current lack of crowds in attendance.

The goalkeeper is another who failed to establish himself in the senior set-up during his time with Reds, but has gone on to demonstrate all the qualities needed to succeed in the English top flight.

The Preston-born stopper had loan moves at seven clubs while at the Reds and it was in the last of those, while at Aston Villa, that Johnstone really announced himself as a top-level keeper.

Joining in January 2017, Johnstone helped shore up a leaky Villa defence, before returning the following term where his excellent showing between the sticks guided the Villans to the Championship play-off final.

Villa’s downfall that day against Fulham worked in West Brom’s favour, as they swooped to steal the keeper from under the noses of their West Midlands neighbours.

At The Hawthorns, Johnstone played an instrumental role as the Baggies made it to the play-off semi-finals in 2018/19, before gaining automatic promotion last term.

Since making his top-flight bow, the West Brom keeper has excelled and no keeper in the Premier League has made more saves this season than Johnstone.

The goalkeeper has, perhaps, produced his best showings this season when playing in Manchester. In December, his outstanding contribution helped West Brom to a point at the Etihad Stadium, while he made several outstanding saves when we last took on the Baggies in November.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that so many have tipped him as a dark house to earn a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the European Championships this summer.

While everyone connected with United hopes Johnstone’s heroics aren’t being discussed this weekend, his performances have been a source of great pride for our Academy, as yet another graduate has gone on to demonstrate his quality, mentality and work rate.

Default Re: Samuel Luke "Sam" Johnstone

Manchester United 'keen on bringing Sam Johnstone BACK to Old Trafford this summer... should David de Gea or Dean Henderson leave' as former Red Devils academy graduate continues to impress at West Brom

* West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has just over one year left on his contract
* Manchester United are keen on re-signing the 28-year-old, according to reports
* Johnstone's quality form for West Brom earned him an England call-up in March
* The shot stopper came through the youth ranks at Old Trafford and left in 2018

Manchester United are interested in bringing back former goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to Old Trafford, according to reports.

The 28-year-old goalkeeper is having a stand-out season for relegation candidates West Bromwich Albion, with his recent form earning him a first call-up to Gareth Southgate's England squad in March.

The summer transfer window promises to be an important period in United's goalkeeping department, with the future of David de Gea uncertain after Dean Henderson's recent spell in the side.

Reports claim Manchester United could move for West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. The 28-year-old (right) has impressed with several high-profile stops for West Brom this term

And according to The Sun, the Red Devils will make a move for Johnstone should one of De Gea or Henderson opt to leave the club in the coming months.

The Red Devils also have Sergio Romero and Lee Grant on their goalkeeping roster, but neither of the duo have made a senior appearance so far this term.

The Baggies goalkeeper has kept five clean sheets in 29 top-flight appearances this season but has caught the eye in a number of stunning displays, particularly against the top sides.

Johnstone pulled off some incredible stops as West Brom picked up surprise points away at Liverpool and Manchester City this season, while his accuracy with his feet has been impressive too.

Johnstone has one-year left on his contract from this summer with the Baggies facing the drop. Johnstone's form earned him a first senior England call-up last month

The 28-year-old picked up his first assist of the season by playing a pin-point ball to Matheus Peireira to slot home in Albion's shock 5-2 victory at Chelsea last weekend.

But the Baggies face a real struggle to stay in the top-flight for next season with Sam Allardyce's side eight points behind 17th-placed Newcastle with eight games to play going into Monday's clash at home to Southampton.

Johnstone will have one year remaining on his West Brom contract and could be tempted to move on should the Midlands side face the drop.

Johnstone came through the youth ranks at United but never made a senior appearance

A move back to Manchester United would see the shot stopper return to the club where he spent many years as the club's number one goalkeeper at academy level.

The goalkeeper first joined the Red Devils in 2009 as a youngster but never made a senior appearance for the club before joining the Baggies in 2018, via loan spells at several Football League clubs including Aston Villa.

ESPN reported this week that Johnstone could be valued at around £10million by West Brom this summer, with Tottenham, West Ham and Leeds also interested in the shot stopper.
