Ferguson sets United goals target

SIR Alex Ferguson has ordered United to re-establish themselves as the Premier League's sharpest shooters.

And the United boss, named as manager of the month for September, has backed Wayne Rooney to help the champions blast their way past Liverpool in the scoring charts.

Fergie watched as Rafael Benitez's side became the league's leading scorers last season with 77 goals - nine more than United. And the Anfield club have continued that hot streak this term with 22 goals already, compared to United's 17.

But ahead of their clash with Sunderland today, Fergie is convinced United are ready to turn the tables on Liverpool.

"We said at the start of the season that our goals record in the league last year was a complete change from previous years," he said.

"One year we got to 90-plus goals and almost every year was an improvement in the goal scoring department. Last year was completely different to our normal years. We want to get back up to that decent level again. We've made a good start 17 goals in the Premier Division so far, which is far more acceptable."

United have been the leading scorers in 10 of the 17 seasons since the Premier League began in 1992.

Their best haul was in 2000 when they struck 97 times on the way to the title. On five occasions they've scored 80 goals or more, which is why Fergie was so alarmed with their total of 68 last season.

And while Ferguson expects hitman Roo to lead his side's charge, he is happy to see the goals spread about.

"If we got two or three players over 20 goals we would be happy with that," he said.

"If Wayne could get us 25-plus we would be delighted. He's had a good start, the signs are good and we hope he continues."

Mungkin opa bisa mulai ngeluarin anak2 kecilnya nih, just like what he did in 1992...

He... betul banget. ditambah 2 orang sering masuk angin (angin-anginan maksudnya) gara-gara sih muda.

Berat klo gini terus... udah itu ditambah gelandang-gelandang yang nggak terlalu produktif. bukan hanya striker yang harus dibenahi. gelandang, bek dan yang pasti kiper (sebelum VDS sembuh). gimana mo bisa ngegolin klo gelandangnya sibuk bantu defense... gimana mo ngegolin klo strikernya sibuk juga ng-cover gelandang. jadi kesimpulannya semua musti diperbaiki.

they're not doing that either, bro... midfield kita tuh kaya anak keilangan induk... linglung, bingung mo ngapain.. No leader, no creativity, no idea....

sebenernya gw bingung dengan taktik yang opa pake... kenapa juga dia masukin Welbeck instead of Tosic or even Valencia at first place...? Welbeck jadi out of position gitu, and he died in the pocket of Bardsley... Nani still not using his head... And Fletch can't running all over the pitch to cover Scholesey, why not put Anderson di sebelahnya Fletch, jadi fletch bisa fokus jadi breaker... dengan formasi yang lemah di tengah dan supply bola yang kurang (akibat salah pass mulu), Rooney and Berba jadi mundur jauh untuk pick up ball, and depan jadi kosong deh... Evra ga bisa naek terus, karena Welbeck di kiri selalu nanggung and ga maju ke depan...

sebenernya kita kurang greget aja di gelandang... cuma posisi ini yang harus dibenahi banget... sama KIPER pastinya...

Setuju banget Om... tidak ada leader di lini tengah. bahkan secara keseluruhan tidak ada leader yang bisa mimpin MU malam itu. Vida yang jadi kapten kok rasanya kurang bisa nyemangati temen-temennya. Bener-bener rindu giggs dan rio.

leader yang gw maksud bukan cuma skipper yah.. tapi orang yang bisa ngatur tuh lini tengah biar satu komando.... just like our Cantona, our Keane, our Robson, etc...
