Bridgwater 0-2 Manchester United: Charlotte Buxton puts through her own net and Ella Toone is on target to help Marc Skinner's side through to the fifth round of the FA Cup

* Manchester United Women defeated Bridgwater 2-0 in the FA Cup on Sunday
* Charlotte Buxton put through her own net, before Ella Toone secured the win
* Ex-Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's daughter, Karna, made her debut

There is a new chapter in the Solskjaer history book at Manchester United after 19-year-old Karna, daughter of Ole, made her debut for the women’s team in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The former United boss and his wife were in the stands here at Fairfax Park to watch Marc Skinner’s side defeat third-tier Bridgwater, with Karna (right) coming on as an 87th-minute substitute.

A striker like her father, Karna’s goalscoring form for United’s Under 21s was rewarded with a place in the first-team squad.

Charlotte Buxton scored an own goal, before Ella Toone (pictured) secured the victory. United progress to the fifth round of the competition and were deserved winners throughout

There was no debut goal for the youngster, but she will no doubt be given more opportunities in the future.

‘It wasn’t a token for Karna, it was a deserved one,’ Skinner said of her debut. ‘Obviously she’s got a famous Dad but she wants to be famous in her own right.

‘We were privileged to have Ole as our manager, as well as a wonderful player for this club, but again it stops becoming about Ole as much and more about Karna.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's daughter Karna, 17, made her debut coming on in the 85th minute. Ex-Manchester United boss Ole was in attendance at Fairfax Park to support his daughter

‘It’s so important that we raise that fact. But if we talk about the beauty and the romanticism of the FA Cup, maybe that’s another story of the romanticism of the Solskjaers and how important they are to this club.’

As expected, United started on the front foot and despite some impressive goalkeeping from Beth Howard, found the opener when Charlotte Buxton turned Ivana Fuso’s cross into her own net.

Howard continued to thwart United’s attempts on goal, with the goalkeeper making a string of impressive second-half saves.

But Ella Toone finally beat her in the 82nd minute as she curled a shot into the far right corner.

Chelsea Women 3-1 Manchester United Women: Three first-half goals help Blues progress into the WSL Continental Cup final with a comfortable win over the Red Devils

* Chelsea seal a 3-1 victory over WSL rivals Manchester United in the WSL Cup
* The Blues will face Manchester City or Tottenham Hotspur in the cup final
* Goals from Pernille Harder, Jessie Fleming and Jess Carter sealed the win

Chelsea are through to a third successive Continental League Cup final after a 3-1 semi-final victory over Manchester United.

The Blues, who won the competition against Arsenal in 2020 and Bristol City in 2021, have the chance to make it three in a row in next month’s final at AFC Wimbledon’s Plough Lane.

‘I really enjoyed it. I knew it was coming, I have to be honest,’ Chelsea boss Emma Hayes said of her side’s performance.

‘I’ve seen the growth of this group this side of Christmas and I feel like we’re going from strength to strength.

Chelsea sealed a 3-1 victory over Manchester United in the WSL Cup to seal a place in the final. Pernille Harder scored for Chelsea who will now face Manchester City or Tottenham in the final

'It was the togetherness of everything we did, the way we pressed, the way we sat in, the way we went forward together. I thought it was such a dominant display by us.’

United went into off the back of seven straight wins and clean sheets in all competitions while Chelsea were unbeaten in four and had Sam Kerr back on the bench after her return from the Asia Cup.

In the end, the Blues’ firepower proved too much and United sorely missed the creativity of Ella Toone, who was serving a suspension after picking up two yellow cards earlier in the competition. Midfielder Hayley Ladd was also suspended.

And United boss Marc Skinner believes the rules on suspensions need to change. United played five games before the semi-final while Chelsea entered at the quarter-final stage due to their participation in the Champions League.

‘The rules need to change for next year, we were at a disadvantage tonight,’ Skinner said.

‘We’ve played five games up to the quarter-final in this competition before this game and two players accrued two yellow cards in that moment and are out of the semi-final.

‘Chelsea entered the competition at the quarter-final because of course they were in the Champions League and can’t accrue the same amount of cards so we’re put at a huge disadvantage. We had three WSL teams in our group.

‘Something needs to be addressed with that just to make sure there’s fair opportunity for us to progress with most of our players because it’s just not okay. It’s something that needs to be changed for next year.’

Both teams struggled in the early stages. United had the first real chance when Vilde Boe Risa’s cross picked out Martha Thomas, but the striker’s header was easily caught by Chelsea goalkeeper Zecira Musovic. Pernille Harder then fired over from inside the box at the other end.

But the game came to life mid-way through the first half with four goals in 13 minutes, three of which were scored by the home side.

Chelsea took the lead through Harder when the striker latched onto Guro Reiten’s through ball before selling Aoife Mannion a dummy and rounding goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley to finish into an empty net.

‘I think she was due that,’ Hayes said on Harder’s goal. ‘She’s had to play in this period back-to-back like Fran [Kirby] and played many different roles.

‘I think for her own confidence that goal was important. She’s had to play as 9, not necessarily her natural position but she plays it well.

‘I thought she turned Mannion inside out for the goal. I thought she was a threat all night, she was a pest, she is a pest.’

Jessie Fleming then put the Blues 2-0 ahead shortly after. Reiten’s shot at the back-post was blocked by Ona Batlle but the rebound fell to Fleming, whose header bounced into the ground and over Baggaley.

But United halved the deficit less than a minute later when Risa latched on to a Groenen back-heel before curling a finish into the bottom right corner.

At that point it was game-on but Jess Carter, who ran all the way from the half-way line to meet Reiten’s cross and finish past Baggaley.

Chelsea could have had a penalty shortly after the hour mark when Harder went to ground under a challenge from Maria Thorisdottir but referee Paul Howard showed no interest in pointing to the spot.

Kerr, who was brought on for the final 20 minutes, should have put the game to bed when she was picked out by Harder in the box, but the striker could not apply the finish

Any hopes of a United comeback were dashed when Baggaley was sent off after clattering into Kerr just outside the box.

The goalkeeper was caught in no man’s land as she hesitated over whether to come for Harder’s ball over the top.

Kerr got there first and Baggaley could only send the forward tumbling to the ground, leaving referee Howard no choice but to produce a red card.

Lauren James came off the bench in the final five minutes and almost grabbed a goal against her former side but her shot from the edge of the box was blocked by Batlle.

Both teams have huge league games coming up with United travelling to Arsenal on Saturday before Chelsea host Manchester City on Sunday. United then play City and Chelsea host Arsenal the weekend after.

But it will be Hayes’ side who have an extra spring in their step ahead of a congested month of fixtures.

Manchester City 1-0 Manchester United: Gareth Taylor's side emerge victorious from historic Women's Super League clash at Academy Stadium thanks to a sensational strike from Caroline Weir

* Caroline Weir became Manchester United's nemesis for a third season running
* She scored in the 81st minute of the game to secure City a 1-0 win over United
* Weir sensationally chipped the ball over goalkeeper Mary Earps from long range
* City dominated the game having had 70 percent of the possession and 18 shots
* Weir came off the bench to produce the quality the game had been crying out for

Caroline Weir was Manchester United’s nemesis for a third season running as the midfielder scored a goal of the season contender to give Manchester City a crucial 1-0 victory against their bitter rivals.

Weir’s long-range chip over Mary Earps was even better than the goal she scored in last year’s derby and the rocket shot that won it at the Etihad in 2019.

Both of those goals were shortlisted for the Puskas Award and the Scotland international may have earned herself another nomination on Sunday.

It was a record attendance of 5,317 at the Academy Stadium and for a long time it looked like the fans would be going home without seeing a goal. But Weir had other ideas, coming on to produce the moment of quality they had all been waiting for.

History was made today when Manchester City hosted Manchester United in the WSL. The two sides played in front of a sell out crowd at the Academy Stadium on Sunday afternoon

The midfielder picked up a loose ball, ran forward and chipped into the top corner over the despairing dive of Earps.

City boss Gareth Taylor enjoyed Weir’s winner more than the one she scored in last season’s derby. ‘It was a different feeling today,’ he said. ‘Having the supporters here and a full house, record crowd, it just felt amazing.

‘I think that is a better goal than last season as she was under pressure from a couple of United players. To execute that finish under pressure is really difficult.

‘It was a really dominant performance. Our pressing was good and we limited United to very few moments. I’m delighted for the players, they deserved that.’

City’s victory has huge ramifications in the battle to finish third and secure a Champions League spot. It moves Taylor’s side to within two points of fourth-placed United and keeps them four behind Tottenham in third. United are still yet to beat their rivals in a league match and deserved nothing yesterday.

‘Today will be a massive fuel for us,’ said United boss Marc Skinner. ‘I’ve asked the players to feel it after the game. They’re devastated by the result, but they need to feel it. That’s the fuel for when you play them next time.’

Gareth Taylor's side claimed a 1-0 victory thanks to a late goal from Caroline Weir. Weir sensationally chipped the ball over keeper Mary Earps from long range. Manchester City dominated the game having had 70 per cent of the possession and 18 shots. United deserved little from the game and this could be damaging in their quest for Europe

City were by far the better team and could have been three or four goals ahead at half-time.

The first chance came in the fifth minute when Vicky Losada volleyed over from the edge of the box. But an even better opportunity came two minutes later when Jess Park’s pass found Lauren Hemp at the back post, only for the forward to somehow tap over the bar from two yards. Hemp met Lucy Bronze’s cross but her effort went straight into the hands of Earps.

City continued to dominate at the start of the second half as United struggled to build up any rhythm. Park came close to opening the scoring when she cut in from the right before curling a shot on to the post. At the other end, Ella Toone tested Ellie Roebuck before Martha Thomas headed over from a corner.

But United’s resistance was finally broken through Weir’s stunner. United could have equalised when a cross was played into the box but Signe Bruun was unable to apply the finish.

READING 1 MANCHESTER UNITED WOMEN 3

Manchester United Women continued the quest for a top-three finish this season in the WSL by defeating Reading 3-1 at the Madjeski Stadium.

Leah Galton opened the scoring after just four minutes, but the Reds were pegged back just 10 minutes later. Galton and Alessia Russo both netted soon after the Royals' equaliser, ensuring we continued our unbeaten start to the month of March.

The victory means Marc Skinner's side remain in third position in the WSL, three points ahead of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, with just six games remaining.

FIRST HALF

The game produced its first notable action after a mere 15 seconds, as some smooth build-up play involving Martha Thomas and Alessia Russo led to the latter taking aim from the edge of the penalty area, only for her right-footed effort to cannon back off the woodwork.

And just four minutes later, it was the Reds who took the lead. Hannah Blundell burst forward down the left flank before crossing wonderfully for Galton to head home, netting her 5th WSL strike of the season so far and giving United an early lead.

Reading then came forward soon after, with forward Rachel Rowe flashing her powerful right-footed effort just wide.

With 15 minutes gone, the hosts drew level, as Blundell’s misplaced pass was seized upon by Rowe, who in turn played in Deanne Rose to fire home the Royals' equaliser, in a frantic opening to the game.

United then regained the lead just eight minutes later, as Russo turned provider, producing a wonderful defence-splitting pass that found Galton, who raced through and rounded Reading goalkeeper Grace Moloney to net her second goal of the game.

Martha Thomas then raced clean through, but with Galton and Russo waiting alongside her, the forward chose to go alone, before the home side cleared their lines to prevent falling further behind.

The Reds did then add to their tally just moments before the interval. Batlle unleashed a shot with the ball clearly crossing the line after bouncing back off the crossbar.

Play continued despite United’s claims for a goal, but Russo ensured Skinner's side would still take a comfortable two-goal cushion into the break by collecting the ball and firing home a right-footed strike.

SECOND HALF

As the second half rolled around it was once again United who dominated the early proceedings, with the Reds keen to find a fourth goal.

Mary Earps was called upon as the Royals attempted to get back into the game. The United no.27 did superbly as she twice denied Rose in a matter of seconds to keep the score at 3-1.

With the Reds seemingly happy to protect the two-goal advantage for large parts of the second period, Earps again was called upon with 15 minutes remaining, as she denied the hosts a second strike, smartly saving a Vanhaevermaet header at the back post.

United then had claims for a penalty waved away as Thomas went down under a strong tackle from Chloe Peplow in the area. Toone's follow-up effort sailed wide soon after. The same player combined well with Galton once more before again firing just wide of the mark.

The Reds safely saw out the latter stages of the game, to return home from Berkshire with three more points in the bag.

Default Re: Manchester United Women's Team

Manchester United Women play at Old Trafford in front of fans for the first time EVER as a WSL season record of over 20,000 spectators watch them come from behind to beat Everton 3-1

* Manchester United have previously played in front of closed doors at the ground
* But 20,241 streamed into the ground to see them storm to victory in the WSL
* Alessia Russo scored twice while Katie Zelem netted from the penalty spot
* Victory keeps up hopes of Marc Skinner's side reaching the Champions League

Manchester United were the club that, for 13 years, didn’t care about women’s football. The team they had was disbanded when the Glazers took over in 2005 and it took until 2018 for that decision to be reversed.

But that is in the past and United cannot be accused of not caring anymore. A crowd of 20,241 watched on as Marc Skinner’s side played their first game at Old Trafford in front of fans. A brace from Alessia Russo and a Katie Zelem penalty cancelled out Claire Emslie’s opener to give the Red Devils a 3-1 victory.

From the artwork outside the stadium to the club’s social media posts, United did a fantastic job of promoting this fixture. The interest is clearly there and watching on in the stands was the club’s new CEO Richard Arnold, director of football John Murtough and technical director Darren Fletcher.

Manchester United Women celebrate at full-time following their 3-1 victory over Everton

Fans flocked to see Manchester United Women play in front of spectators at Old Trafford. Over 20,000 spectators were in attendance, setting a record for the WSL this season

‘I think women’s football won today,’ Skinner said. ‘I think it shows the growth and the magnitude that, and the impact that, this club can have in growing the game, and that for me is a wonderful thing.

‘This club can be on the world stage to develop our sport. I hope they come to support us at Leigh as well. That’s important that we don’t just stamp it and move on, we have to keep the noise moving.

‘The reality is we’re growing, we have to grow, can we fill Leigh? That is the next challenge.’

The attendance, which is the highest of a WSL match this season, signals that United’s long-term future should be in a stadium closer to the Theatre of Dreams.

The club have drawn up plans to renovate and rebuild Old Trafford. They have to make the women’s team part of that project. A new stadium, that could house both them and the academy teams, would be perfect.

It has worked for Manchester City. Their Academy stadium is opposite the Etihad and its central location makes it far more convenient for fans. United’s current home of Leigh Sports Village is 16.7 miles away from Old Trafford, a journey which takes at least an hour by public transport. Tourists who travel to Manchester to watch the men’s side for a 3pm game on a Saturday would be more inclined to take in the women’s game on a Sunday if it was played closer to Old Trafford.

They are much less likely to travel to Leigh. But this is a problem throughout the WSL. Arsenal, Tottenham, Brighton and Aston Villa all play too far away from where most of their core fans are based.

In the short-term, United have to work on selling-out Leigh. ‘It’s a fantastic facility for us, it’s perfect for womens’ football,’ Skinner said. ‘Yes it’s further out, I understand that. I think playing in big stadiums will expose us to better experiences. Do you do it all the time? Maybe not right now, but we continue to work towards that being where we can attract 20,000 people.

Katie Zelem fired United ahead from the penalty spot as they came from behind to win

‘I’ve been in America where you’re playing in front of 24,000 and the players can’t hear you. It’s really important we continue to grow. I feel and I hope, I will work towards making that a reality where we can fill a stadium. Why in the future can’t we fill Old Trafford and there be that many fans waiting for us?’

On what was a historic day for United’s women, the most important thing was the result. But Everton threatened to spoil the party when Emslie put them ahead in the fourth minute. The winger was played through by Kenza Dali and kept her cool to fire into the bottom left corner.

The early goal had left the United shell shocked, but they gradually settled down and had a flurry of chances mid-way through the half. First, Martha Thomas hit a first time volley that was well saved by Sandy MacIver before Leah Galton saw an effort blocked by Gabby George.

United’s pressure was finally rewarded when Russo headed in the equaliser in the 35th minute. The forward got above Nathalie Bjorn to meet Ona Battle’s cross and send a looping header over MacIver.

United's victory keeps them on course to qualify for the Champions League next season

The hosts started the second half on the front foot and should have taken the lead in the 50th minute. Thomas picked out an unmarked Toone at the back-post, but the forward blazed her shot over the bar. That miss didn’t prove costly, however, as United went ahead three minutes later.

Half-time substitute Lucy Graham tripped Thomas in the box and referee Helen Conley pointed to the spot. United captain Katie Zelem stepped up to fire into the roof of the net as MacIver dived the wrong way.

Thomas thought she had made it 3-1 when she fired in from close range after Maria Thorisdottir’s shot had been saved by MacIver, but the offside flag was raised.

Everton never really looked like getting back into the game and Russo wrapped up the points for United with her second headed goal, meeting Zelem’s corner to make it 3-1 in the 84th minute.

MANCHESTER UNITED WOMEN 3 WEST HAM 0

Manchester United Women returned to third place in the WSL table following a comprehensive 3-0 home success against West Ham United.

A header from Martha Thomas and an own goal by Hammers defender Grace Fisk put the Reds in the driving seat early on, before Leah Galton added a third strike just minutes after the second half had resumed.

Ella Toone and Alessia Russo both had opportunities to add to the scoring, as Marc Skinner's side comfortably returned to winning ways.

The Reds climb back into the top three with just one game remaining; we complete our WSL schedule this season with a trip to the capital to face Chelsea next Sunday.

FIRST HALF

Ona Batlle was the first to test West Ham's goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold early on, as the Spanish international drove forward before her right-footed effort was well saved.

From the resulting corner, the away side failed to clear their lines with the ball breaking to Martha Thomas, as the 25-year-old was again denied by Arnold.

After 11 minutes played at Leigh Sports Village, the Reds did take a deserved lead, making the early dominance count. Zelem’s terrific forward pass found Galton down the left and her cross was wonderfully nodded home by fellow forward Martha Thomas.

Just eight minutes later, the Reds doubled their advantage, as Hammers defender Grace Fisk put through her own net.

Skinner’s side had swiftly moved through the pitch in the build-up with Thomas again involved. Aiming to pick out a team-mate, the ball eventually trickled into the Hammers' net to register the game's second goal.

Maria Thorisdottir then bravely put her body on the line to spare Hayley Ladd’s blushes. Lisa Evans’ right-footed strike was travelling at some speed before the Reds defender took a ball straight to her face.

With Skinner's side largely in charge as the first half rolled on, midfielders Zelem and Jackie Groenen continued to dominate the play, with West Ham having to rely on counter attacks to try and carve open their own opportunities.

Thorisdottir was again the hero for United before the break, blocking Tameka Yallop’s goal-bound effort after Batlle lost the ball to the visitors on the edge of the area.

SECOND HALF

As the second half began, the Reds wasted little time in making it 3-0 through the ever-threatening Galton. Alessia Russo picked up the ball on the right flank before picking out Galton unmarked, as our no.11 notched her eighth goal of the campaign.

The lead could have been extended just moments later, as Skinner’s side continued to come forward with Thomas denied her second of the afternoon thanks to a strong save from Arnold.

Russo and Toone then linked up on the edge of the area with just twenty minutes remaining, as the latter turned delightfully before curling her effort just marginally too high.

With the Hammers bidding to get back into the game late on, the Reds' defensive partnership of Thorisdottir and Ladd continued to stand tall, thwarting any potential advances.

Lucy Staniforth charged forward with just ten minutes remaining, with her right-footed cross appearing to strike Hawa Cissoko’s arm but the penalty claims were waved away. Her fellow substitute Kirsty Hanson was presented with a late opportunity to add a fourth goal, but the scoreline remained 3-0.

The victory for Skinner's team means the race for Champions League places will go to the final weekend and our trip to Chelsea, regardless of how our rivals Manchester City fare in their game in hand, at home to Birmingham City on Wednesday night.

Signe Bruun will NOT join Manchester United Women permanently after her injury-hit loan spell as the Danish striker returns to parent club Lyon

* Signe Bruun joined Manchester United on loan in January from parent club Lyon
* The 24-year-old struggled to make an impact as injuries limited her playtime
* She may still join another WSL club but has time remaining on her contract

Signe Bruun will not be returning to Manchester United Women this summer following her loan spell with the club last season.

The striker joined United on loan from Lyon in January but she was unable to hit the ground running as injuries hampered her game time.

United were weighing up the possibility of going back in for Bruun as they look to close the gap on the clubs above them in the WSL.

But Bruun is still under contract with Lyon, meaning United would have to pay a fee to lure her away from the French side.

The 24-year-old Signe Bruun spent much of her loan spell at Manchester United out injured

The 24-year-old Denmark international could still join another WSL club before the start of the 2022-2023 season.

Bruun joined Lyon last summer after helping Paris Saint-Germain win the French title.

Elsewhere, Australian international Caitlin Foord is close to signing a new contract with Arsenal.

The striker has had lots of interest from clubs across Europe but is leaning towards remaining in North London.

Foord scored four goals and made three assists in 16 games for the Gunners last season.

HARRIS DEPARTS UNITED WOMEN

Manchester United can confirm that Martha Harris will depart the club this month upon the expiry of her contract.

Harris joined the club in 2018 and was an integral part of United’s title-winning side in the Women’s team’s inaugural season.

The full-back made 49 appearances for the club having made her debut in the 2018/19 12-0 victory over Aston Villa Ladies in the WSL Championship.

Everyone at the club would like to thank Martha for her service and wish her the best of luck for the future.
