Default Re: European Super League

The English 'Big Six' have already lost £8m each after their European Super League was killed off in days... and they could still face huge financial punishments for breaking their contracts

* Super League clubs bought equity stakes for £8 million to support development
* The rebel clubs had signed deals with penalty clauses if they left early
* Man United, Liverpool, Man City, Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea have withdrawn
* And specialist sports lawyers expect organisers to make the contrite clubs pay
* Meanwhile ECA board member Wanja Greuel admits he has 'mixed feelings'

The Premier League’s Big Six have lost tens of millions between them in their attempts to set up a European Super League which ended in a humiliating defeat on Tuesday.

Sportsmail has learned the 12 founding clubs, who announced the venture on Sunday, bought equity stakes of £8million each in the Super League.

The stakes purchased — at a total cost of £48m for the six English clubs — were being used to create the competition’s infrastructure, fund crucial roles such as negotiating with broadcasters and commercial partners, and to pay legal fees.

It is unclear how much of the money has been spent, and if any of it will be returned after the ESL collapsed less than three days after its launch.

The Big Six could also be forced to pay compensation to the six other European founding clubs for breaking a clause in the ESL’s 23-year contract which stated they could not leave for the first three years. But given the competition’s swift spectacular implosion, it is unclear whether the clause will be enforced.

Arsenal fans hung banners outside the Emirates Stadium in protest at the proposals

Lawyers say the contracts will have been structured to encourage clubs to stick with the controversial project in the face of expected protest by imposing large penalties.

But in the end the derision was so extreme that the English clubs - Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal - were forced to withdraw last night, apologising profusely to fans as they left the stage.

And the Super League has been left to lick its wounds and 'reconsider the most appropriate steps to reshape the project'.

However, the ambitions for the derided project were far more extensive than many realised.

For Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Manchester United's outgoing chairman Ed Woodward the ESL was just the first step in their vision for creating a global franchise.

There was the the prospect of setting up similar invitation-only Super Leagues in South America, Asia and Africa at some point in the future under consideration if the initial European tournament went well.

There were even discussions about potentially creating a World Championship involving winners of the various continental leagues in a direct challenge to FIFA's Club World Cup, which was founded 21 years ago and the world governing body are planning to expand.

The equity stakes purchased by the 12 rebel clubs were being used to create the new competition's infrastructure and fund crucial roles such as negotiating with potential broadcasters, commercial partners and pay legal fees.

It is unclear how much of the money has been spent, and if any of it will be returned now the ESL has collapsed less than three days after its launch, which was confirmed this morning when Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli said that the competition could no longer proceed without the six Premier League clubs.

Chelsea fans and those of other clubs protested fiercely at the prospect of a Super League

Asked whether the project could still happen after the exits, Agnelli told Reuters: 'To be frank and honest no, evidently that is not the case. I remain convinced of the beauty of that project. But admittedly I don't think that that project is now still up and running.'

The Premier League's Big Six could also be forced to pay compensation to the six other European Founding Clubs for breaking a clause in the ESL's 23-year contract which stated they could not leave for its first three years.

'I think the clubs taking part in the Super League have put themselves in a position where it is not easy to get out or step back,' said ark Orth, of MEOlaw based in Munich.

'The Super League knew there would be a lot of pressure on clubs to get out so I assume there is also a strong obligation on the clubs not to get out of it.'

Aleksander Ceferin continued his war path against the European Super League on Tuesday

A previous attempt to launch a European Super League in 1998, called Project Gandalf, foundered in part on the fact that the participating clubs were not guaranteed an income for the project and so stuck with the security of UEFA competition.

In this case, it appears the contracts guaranteed funding of up to £310 million for the 15 founding members of the closed-shop competition. These bank guarantees delivered the commitment of 12 of Europe's biggest clubs, but at a price.

'Project Gandalf did not come into effect because there were no bank guarantees,' Orth added. 'I think they have changed it this time.

'It was obvious there would be a lot of pressure on the clubs and they have committed themselves.'

Yesterday, it initially appeared the Super League was in the ascendancy after a court in Madrid made a preliminary ruling that UEFA and football federations could not impose sanctions on clubs and players, who participated in the breakaway competition.

Sportsmail reported on Monday that competition law and legal precedents gave the rebels a strong legal case with UEFA braced to fight it out in the courts.

And we now understand that the European governing body also filed court papers in Spain insisting it did have the right to sanction participants in the Super League, although a ruling is yet to be made.

However, the weight of public and political opinion became so great that the English clubs concluded that taking an economic hit on the Super League contract was a price worth paying.

It was a belated attempt to limit the already considerable reputational damage.

But that may not be an easy decision for others like Barcelona and Real Madrid, who already face a desperate financial situation.

Barcelona's finances were laid bare in January with the club in serious debt and reportedly at real risk of going bankrupt.

Financial figures released showed the La Liga giant's debt at £1.1billion with £648million of that due in the short term while £236million has to be paid to banks by June 30.

Liverpool fans protest outside Anfield on Monday amid the European Super League plans

And the total debt at Real Madrid is reported to be £780 million, with a net debt of £305 million.

'With the financial situation of the Spansih clubs, they cannot pay it back so easily,' added Orth, who is a specialist in sports and competition law.

'The clubs are in a difficult position. They cannot simply say we don't want a Super League and go back to UEFA. The cannot easily get out of it, they will have to pay.'

It's not much better at Inter Milan, which according to reports in Asia and Italy have now said goodbye to the ill-fated European venture following protests across Europe.

The Chinese owners of the club rushed to raise almost £150 million in emergency cash in February, after finances deteriorated due to the pandemic and lavish on players.

No wonder Europe's powerhouse clubs wanted to earn some extra revenue through a Super League, even if it was ultimately at the expense of others.

The upfront money in the scheme included a £3.03 billion investment fund created to support the Super League was secured via JP Morgan.

'This is being driven by JP Morgan,' said Stephen Taylor, head of sports law at JMW, a legal practice that advises footballers and clubs.

'They will have been taking legal advice at the highest level and drawing up contracts with clubs on the basis that they are expecting the clubs to commit to this.'

Taylor said the clubs would have limited options to back out of the contracts.

Extricating themselves from the Super League contracts is only part of the problem now facing the clubs.

They also have to rebuild their relationships with UEFA, the FA and other European clubs and that will not be easy.

'I have mixed feelings,' admitted Wanja Greuel, European Club Association board member and chief executive of BSC Young Boys ins Switzerland.

'On the one hand I am happy because I think this would have been the biggest disaster for European football.

'But I am confused. Did they really think there would be less protest. In my opinion, that was to be expected.

'It will be tricky to reintegrate them,' added Greuel, who was involved in ECA board meetings that agreed to UEFA Champions League plans, while seven of its members were secretly plotting to leave.

''We cannot ban those clubs, but we have to talk to them about how they repay the football community for what they have done.'

Greuel hopes that the trauma of the Super League project will allow a fresh start.

'The whole football family has to to find a way to get control of the cost structure.

'Players perform great and deserve great salaries because they are unique but I am not sure they have to earn £50 million a year.

'With less pressure on the costs, we would not be so desperate for more money.'

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin welcomed the reversal, adding: 'They are back in the fold now and I know they have a lot to offer not just to our competitions but to the whole of the European game.

'The important thing now is that we move on, rebuild the unity that the game enjoyed before this and move forward together.'

Sponsors 'STOPPED discussing deals with Premier League's Big Six amid backlash over European Super League plans', with Manchester United still searching for new training ground and training kit partners

* English football's 'Big Six' backed out of plans for a European Super League
* Pressure from media, fans and broadcasters saw owners renege on the proposal
* Sponsors reportedly ceased talks with the six teams during the last 48 hours
* Manchester United are still looking for a new sponsor for their training ground

The Premier League's Big Six saw talks with potential sponsors brought to a halt amid confusion over involvement in a controversial European Super League, according to a new report.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham announced on Sunday that they were committed to a 15-team European Super League with the backing of investment company JP Morgan to the tune of more than £3billion.

But the Manchester Evening News has now detailed that mounting pressure from supporters saw potential sponsors pull out of talks over deals because they did not want to be associated with the breakaway.

Potential sponsors reportedly abandoned talks with Premier League's Big Six while there was uncertainty over whether they would go ahead with European Super League plans - Man United, for example, are looking for a training ground and kit sponsor to replace Aon. United's co-chairman Joel Glazer played a leading role in trying to sort the breakaway. Fans made their feelings known and sponsors reportedly reacted by pulling out of talks

Liverpool saw their partnership with luxury Swiss watchmaker TRIBUS come to an abrupt end because of the company's opposition to the European Super League plans.

A TRIBUS statement read: 'As official global timing partners of Liverpool FC, and a family of dedicated and lifelong fans based in the city of Liverpool, TRIBUS (Watchmakers) Ltd cannot support the move by the clubs' owners to break away into a new competition, The Super League.

'Our values are at the forefront of everything we do, therefore we will be withdrawing from this partnership.

'Football belongs to the fans and unites us all; it was never intended to benefit the few.'

Liverpool saw Swiss watchmakers TRIBUS end their sponsorship over Super League proposals. In a statement, TRIBUS explained that football 'was never intended to benefit the few'

Also among the Big Six, Manchester United are currently seeking out a new sponsor for their state-of-the-art training ground.

Aon, who have held the naming rights as part of an eight-year contract, see their deal for Carrington expire in the summer.

United chiefs are also looking to secure a new automobile sponsor with a separation from Chevrolet at the end of this season, as well as a new training kit sponsor.

Old Trafford chiefs have already announced Team Viewer as their new shirt sponsor, replacing Chevrolet for the 2021-22 season.

Chevrolet have sponsored United for the last seven seasons.

United are one of the most marketable teams in world football and boast 23 global partners, 13 financial partners, 14 media partners as well as three regional partners in their extensive portfolio of commercial agreements.

Chevrolet are separating as a sponsor of United after seven seasons and the club are currently looking for a new automobile sponsor to add to their extensive commercial portfolio. The Premier League side saw the price of its share price rocket after the announcement of the new breakaway league on Sunday. But shares dropped back down by £150m on Tuesday

The Red Devils' hierarchy faced criticism for playing a leading role in trying to push through the Super League proposal, with co-chairman Joel Glazer declaring it a 'new chapter for football' in the reveal press release.

Climbing down from their position on Tuesday night, pulling out just before 11pm, United produced a meagre 52-word statement.

It simply read: 'Manchester United will not be participating in the European Super League.

'We have listened carefully to the reaction from our fans, the UK government and other key stakeholders.

'We remain committed to working with others across the football community to come up with sustainable solutions to the long-term challenges facing the game.'

The club has already felt its first casualty from the Super League mess, after it was announced that chief executive Ed Woodward would be stepping down from his role at Old Trafford.

Woodward was a key figure in fiercely controversial plans for the new breakaway league, with his links to US investment bank JP Morgan helping to secure the £4.3billion in financing.

Confirming his decision on Tuesday night, Woodward said: 'I am extremely proud to have served United and it has been an honour to work for the world's greatest football club for the past 16 years.

'The club is well positioned for the future and it will be difficult to walk away at the end of the year.

'I will treasure the memories from my time at Old Trafford, during a period when we won the Europa League, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. I am proud of the regeneration of the club's culture and our return to the Manchester United way of playing.

'We have invested more than £1bn in the squad during my time here and I am particularly delighted with the progress the players have made under the astute leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching team in the last two years.'

Premier League clubs 'want Rangers and Celtic to join new British Super League' as Big Six continue to push for reform of top flight despite embarrassing retreat from breakaway European Super League

Celtic and Rangers are wanted to join a British Super League amid the fall-out of the European Super League debacle, according to the Sun.

The 'Big Six' were forced to ditch their lucrative plan for a new midweek European competition following a public outcry this week.

However, the clubs remain committed to a reform of the Premier League following the publication in October of the Project Big Picture plans drafted by Liverpool and Manchester United.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters agreed to a 'strategic review' of the competition's future focusing on 'competition structure, calendar, governance and financial sustainability'.

One of the most ambitious proposals is for the two Glasgow giants to join the Premier League.

And unlike the European Super League controversy which was widely condemned, it is likely the move would be backed by FIFA, UEFA and the UK Government.

Steven Gerrard's Rangers could be offered the chance to join a new British Super League. Celtic and Rangers are wanted to join a British League after the failed Euro breakaway plot

The Sun quoted one club source as saying: 'Whether or not the Super League was going to happen, we all feel that the Premier League has to be changed and improved.

'It is time we opened it up to Rangers and Celtic. That would make sense for everyone.'

SPL rivals may be willing to back the move because it would give them a realistic chance of winning the title and the chance to qualify for the revamped Champions League.

In addition to the Rangers and Celtic plan, another option is to introduce an end of season play-off competition, similar to that in rugby union and rugby league.

The top clubs are also still pushing for a reduction to an 18 team league that was envisaged at the outset of the competition three decades ago.

Gary Neville slams Manchester United's initial European Super League apology as a 'farce', before branding Liverpool owner John W Henry's grovelling video to fans an 'embarrassment' - as pundit insists 'pariahs' behind plot 'will not go away'

* Gary Neville has hit out at Man United and Liverpool's Super League apologies
* The duo were involved in the plot that threatened the football landscape
* However, amid huge backlash, United and Liverpool dropped out last week
* Neville said United's first apology was a 'farce', Liverpool's an 'embarrassment'
* The Sky Sports pundit feats that the 'pariahs' involved will not go away

Gary Neville has branded Manchester United's initial European Super League apology a 'farce' while labelling Liverpool owner John W Henry's apology video an 'embarrassment' as the pundit said the 'pariahs' involved in the plot will come back.

Football breathed a huge sigh of relief last week when the £3.5bn, JP Morgan-backed scheme that threatened to change the landscape of the game fell apart just 48 hours after it was unveiled.

Liverpool and United were driving forces behind the breakaway league alongside Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Arsenal's billionaire owner Stan Kroenke - a position his son Josh has strenuously denied.

Amid widespread backlash from fans, pundits and even UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the six English football clubs involved all dropped out of the league, each releasing apologies for their part in the scheme.

Gary Neville has hit out at the 'farce' apologies from Manchester United and Liverpool

And Neville has slammed United's initial 52-word statement in which they said they had 'listened carefully' to fans, branding it a 'farce'.

'We have seen this week how out of touch some of the owners are,' the Sky Sports pundit said on The Gary Neville Podcast.

'The Manchester United first apology was a farce. No one has put their name on it, who would? It was an absolute joke of an apology. It wasn't even an apology, I don't think.

'Then Joel Glazer came out five or six hours later because he probably recognised that the first apology was just a disgrace.'

Neville then turned his attention on Liverpool owner John W Henry, after the club released a video of their American owner issuing a grovelling apology to supporters in a two-minute clip.

'I mean who at Liverpool ever sanctioned that JW Henry video going out? I mean that was an embarrassment. You think about when you drive to Liverpool and you go up to a game and you see those fans and you think to yourself "who allowed that video to go out?"'

'It was an absolute joke. Maybe the most clever thing the Glazers have done in the last seven or eight years is not speak if that's how it is going to come across. Maybe they are actually more aware.

United released an initial 52-word statement about dropping out, to the fury of supporters. Neville labelled Henry's grovelling apology a video 'an embarrassment' to Liverpool FC. The Sky Sports pundit added that he fears the scheme will return further along the line

'These people have misrepresented their clubs, they have misunderstood the fan, "the consumer" as they would call them, "the customer".'

Neville, who admitted he felt uncomfortable commentating on the Carabao Cup final between Man City and Spurs - two participants of the breakaway league, fears that the rebel clubs will return with another attempt to form a Super League in the future.

'Sorry isn't enough because we have still got very powerful individuals in Europe saying that these teams are not leaving the Super League, that they have signed up, they are in binding contracts and this is going to come back.

'These are people who don't take no for an answer, Perez and Laporta don't take no for an answer, they aren't going to go away.

'They are going to come back, these people. pariahs. They are not going away.'

Default Re: European Super League

UEFA 'considering two-year Champions League bans' for the clubs still not backing down from European Super League proposals but organisation 'reaches understanding with English clubs on lesser sanctions'

* UEFA is reportedly planning to impose two-year Champions League bans
* The action would be taken against those still supporting European Super League
* English clubs believed to have reached an agreement over lesser sanctions
* Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are refusing to back down in the dispute

UEFA are believed to be considering two-year Champions League bans for those clubs that were involved in the European Super League proposals and have not yet definitively distanced themselves from the plans.

That is the strongest punishment available for the organisation to give out, and would see those clubs barred from competing in either the Champions League or Europa League.

According to ESPN, seven of the clubs involved in the project - all of the English sides and Atletico Madrid - have been in contact with UEFA over the last 10 days and have reached an agreement with the organisation after talks which centred on lesser sanctions for those willing to formally move away from the Super League.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and AC Milan have not backed down though, and believe their position is strong enough to avoid disciplinary action.

However, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin would point to Article 51 of the statutes, which states 'no combinations or alliances between... clubs affiliated, directly or indirectly, to different UEFA Member Associations may be formed without the permission of UEFA.'

UEFA are keen to pressure as many clubs as possible into turning their back on the project and are willing to impose the strictest disciplinary action on those that aren't, as ESPN report than if nine of the 12 clubs officially pull out then the Super League would be formally terminated.

In an exclusive interview with The Mail on Sunday last month, Ceferin revealed that while all of those clubs involved in the Super League had to be held responsible, he holds less resentment towards the English clubs after they were the first to pull out as the project collapsed.

'Let's see. Everyone has to take consequences for what they did and we cannot pretend nothing happened,' Ceferin said.

UEFA are reportedly considering Champions League bans for clubs supporting Super League. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin mocked those clubs still believing in the Super League

'You cannot do something like that and just say: 'I've been punished because everybody hates me.' They don't have problems because of anyone else but themselves.

'It's not OK what they did and we will see in next few days what we have to do.

'But for me it's a clear difference between the English clubs and the other six. They pulled out first, they admitted they made a mistake. You have to have some greatness to say: 'I was wrong.'

'For me there are three groups of this 12 — the English Six, who went out first, then the other three [Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Inter] after them and then the ones who feel that Earth is flat and they think the Super League still exists.

'And there is a big difference between those. But everyone will be held responsible. In what way, we will see.'

Ini Hukuman 9 Klub Penggagas European Super League
Putra Rusdi K - Sepakbola

Jakarta - UEFA telah mengambil langkah untuk sembilan klub yang sempat membelot menggagas European Super League. Klub-klub ini telah berkomitmen mengikuti kompetisi UEFA.

12 klub sebelumnya sempat menggagas ajang European Super League.

The mega-wealthy 'Big Six' Premier League clubs who secretly plotted the European Super League pay a 'goodwill gesture' of just £22m in total - and agree to cough up £25m each and lose 30 points if they try it again

* The Premier League's breakaway Big Six are paying a total of £22million between them as a 'goodwill gesture'
* A deal was agreed on Wednesday after the six clubs came in for fierce backlash
* The amount is to be put towards grassroots and fan and community initiatives
* Any attempts to breakaway again will see a £25m fine and 30-point deduction

The Premier League will receive a 'goodwill gesture' from the breakaway Big Six of around £22m – with any further attempts subject to a 30-point deduction.

Sportsmail understands that a deal which swerves the need for a disciplinary process was agreed on Wednesday morning.

As expected, each club will not be handed a deduction now and the money they hand over is understood to be earmarked for grassroots, fan and community initiatives rather than for the other 14 clubs.

Further attempts to join another league will result in a £25m fine for the offending club and a 30-point deduction.

Manchester City and Chelsea are two of the clubs who attemped to form the Super League. Manchester United and Liverpool were both also heavily involved in the Super League's launch

A statement released by the Premier League and The Football Association says: 'The six clubs involved in proposals to form a European Super League have today acknowledged once again that their actions were a mistake, and have reconfirmed their commitment to the Premier League and the future of the English game.

'They have wholeheartedly apologised to their fans, fellow clubs, the Premier League and The FA.

'As a gesture of goodwill, the clubs have collectively agreed to make a contribution of £22million, which will go towards the good of the game, including new investment in support for fans, grassroots football and community programmes.

The failed breakaway had led to supporters of the Big Six clubs taking to the streets to protest

'Furthermore, the clubs have agreed to support rule changes so that any similar actions in the future would lead to a 30-point deduction.

'Each of the six clubs, in that event, would also be subject to an additional £25m fine.

'The Premier League and The FA have worked closely together throughout this process and this agreement brings both investigations into the matter to a conclusion.'

However, the current penalty may well be seen by some as a victory for the six - both Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Some of the other 14 clubs had called for immediate deductions. Talks, which at times had become strained, had been ongoing for some time.

One of the major sticking points was over where the 'fine' would go.

The six did not want their punishments to line the pockets of their rivals with a view that they would have jumped at the European Super League should they have been invited.

The deal comes on the eve of the Premier League's AGM in Harrogate.

There was a desire to get it over the line before Wednesday night's traditional dinner, at which Big Six executives are often split and seated with their counterparts from the other 14.

Sportsmail reported on Tuesday night that the six clubs wanted a penalty similar to that meted out by UEFA last month.

They were each fined £1.5m, and the money will go to children's and grassroots football across Europe.

The clubs also agreed to have five per cent of the revenue they would have banked from UEFA club competitions for one season withheld.

For the Premier League's punishment, all six teams were keen on a similar situation, with the amount of money being put towards good causes, rather than their rivals.

It appeared at one moment this week that talks may collapse, but the breakthrough was eventually reached on Tuesday.

As a result of the Super League's collapse, the Premier League introduced measures to prevent a repeat in the future through an owners' charter.

The owners of all 20 top-flight clubs will be required to sign up to the charter, which enforces the principles of the competition.
