Kemungkinan Dimitar Berbatov bertahan di Old Trafford belum menemui kejelasan. Jika sebelumnya manajer Alex Ferguson menegaskan jika pemainnya itu akan dijual, sang agen malah menyatakan sebaliknya.

"Situasi yang ada sekarang ini sudah jelas. Masa depan Dimitar akan tetap di Manchester. Dia senang berada di sini," tegas Emil Dantchev kepada Calciomercato.

Agen Berbatov itu juga menyatakan kabar jika adanya keretakan hubungan antara Ferguson dengan kliennya hanyalah kabar burung.

"Saya pribadi tak ingin memberikan komentar seputar hal ini di media. Saya hanya bisa bilang saya tidak memiliki agenda pertemuan dengan Ferguson, karena memang tidak perlu," paparnya.

Berbatov sendiri dilaporkan diminati sejumlah klub papan atas Eropa. Bayern Muenchen dan Milan kabarnya cukup tertarik memboyongnya keluar ke Old Trafford.

"Saya juga mendengar kabar ini. Saya hanya bisa bilang semua ini hanyalah rumor dari pasar transfer dan semua itu tidaklah nyata," paparnya.

Manchester United are hoping to sign Italian Giampaolo Pazzini to replace Old Trafford flop Dimitar Berbatov. The highly rated Sampdoria man is having the best season of his career and has fought his way into the Italian squad with his determined performances for the Genoa based side.

Sir Alex Ferguson will look to sell faltering Bulgarian international Dimitar Berbatov after running out of patience with the former Tottenham forward and even though he hopes to have funds to make a move for new players this summer the wily Scot is happy to remove under performing elements of his squad before bringing in new signings.

25 year old Pazzini has gone from strength to strength since his move from Fiorentina to Sampdoria and has helped Luigi Del Neri’s side to within reach of a Champions League spot but will surely still be very tempted by a potential move to the Premier League champions.

Macheda agent rules out United exit

The agent of Manchester United striker Federico Macheda has ruled out the possibility of the teenager leaving Old Trafford this summer.

Macheda was expected to go from strength to strength this season after making a stunning impact in a couple of crucial games in 2008/9.

However, his progress has been hampered by injuries and opportunities have been limited for the 18-year-old.

Bologna were interested in taking him on loan in January but a switch failed to materialise.

Speculation has now resurfaced about a possible move at the end of the season but Macheda's representative Giovanni Bia expects him to stay at Old Trafford.

"On Macheda there was an interest from Bologna in the January window, but Manchester United held him absolutely unsellable," Bia told Radio Tau.

"I think it will be the same also in the next summer market.

"There will be no possibility of moving because the club will hold him tight."

TOTTENHAM'S GARETH BALE IS £20M MANCHESTER UNITED TARGET


MANCHESTER United have made Tottenham's Gareth Bale one of their prime summer targets and are willing to pay £20million to secure his services.

A deal for Bale, 20, could even be discussed when the two clubs meet at Old Trafford on Saturday and the player is understood to be aware of United's interests.

Spurs travel to Manchester hoping to clinch fourth spot - and Champions League qualification would represent their best chance of being able to afford to turn down United and convince Bale to stay at White Hart Lane.
Manchester City and Inter Milan are also monitoring him but it is United’s interest that is currently strongest.

Although a left-back, Bale has looked equally comfortable on the left wing for Spurs.

He went 24 Premier League games without appearing on a winning side but has excelled since the turn of the year.

Bale scored his first goals of the season in the back-to-back victories over Arsenal and Chelsea, but United’s interest in him is not new. They first wanted to sign him as a 17-year-old from Southampton and Welsh legend Ryan Giggs even tried to persuade him to go to Old Trafford.

At the time, however, Bale was fearful he would not get enough first-team chances and instead chose to sign for Spurs for a fee of £5m, rising to £10m. A serious ankle injury cut short Bale’s first season and he struggled to make much of an impact when manager Harry Redknapp joined in October 2008.
But Redknapp will be desperate for Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to rebuff United’s advances, having spoken of his relief at turning down City and Inter last year. “It would have scared me to death to have sold him,” said Redknapp after the Bale-inspired victory over Chelsea. I knew what he had. The sky’s the limit for him now.”

Redknapp claimed Bale broke a world record for the ground covered at Wembley in Spurs’ FA Cup semi-final defeat by Portsmouth, having run about nine miles.

Manchester United in need of summer surgery

Manchester United have already tied up deals for Javier Hernandez, the Mexico striker, and Chris Smalling, the England Under-21 defender, who will move to Old Trafford from Chivas and Fulham respectively on July 1.

Given the struggles of other emerging young players Sir Alex Ferguson has signed in the past three years, however, United supporters remain uncertain about what to expect from Hernandez and Smalling, neither of whom have much pedigree to talk of as yet.

Ferguson said last week that he plans to sign “two more players at the most”, but whether or not that is true, there is a growing feeling among fans that United need another goalkeeper, midfield player and striker to help address the weaknesses that have been exposed during the course of an inconsistent campaign.

Even if United win a record fourth successive Barclays Premier League title, in addition to the Carling Cup secured in February, seven league defeats so far, elimination from the Champions League quarter-finals at the hands of a modest Bayern Munich team, defeat in the third round of the FA Cup by Leeds United and a dependence on Wayne Rooney make it clear that some surgery is required.

Here, timesonline takes a look at who might come and go at Old Trafford this summer.

GOALKEEPER

Edwin Van der Sar has been one of Ferguson’s best signings of the past five years, the Dutchman’s form between the posts underlining what a mistake the United manager made by failing to sign him earlier as a replacement for Peter Schmeichel.

But Van der Sar turns 40 in October, and with next season expected to be his last at the club, Ferguson needs a world-class goalkeeper he can rely upon.

Tomasz Kuszczak coped admirably with a makeshift defence in front of him when Van der Sar was out injured and then on compassionate leave because of an illness to his wife during an eight week period between the end of November and middle of January, but the Pole does not instil enough confidence in his team-mates to be considered a regular No 1 and is prone to mistakes.

Ben Foster was supposed to be the heir apparent to Van der Sar, but the 27-year-old has endured a dreadful season. He has not started a game since October 3, when errors in the 2-2 draw at home to Sunderland prompted Ferguson to tear into a goalkeeper who had boldly proclaimed would become England’s No 1 for years.

A series of other blunders have raised serious questions about his ability to keep goal for a club of United’s stature, and despite appearing to be certain to go to the World Cup earlier in the season, his inclusion in Fabio Capello’s squad for South Africa now seems unlikely.

Gary Bailey, the former United goalkeeper, revealed this week that Foster’s stock has fallen so low at Old Trafford that he was even training apart in some sessions from the other players.

Ferguson has ran the rule of Hugo Lloris, the Lyon and France goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, at Schalke 04, and Igor Afinkeev, the CSKA Moscow No. 1.

Lloris did not look convincing in Lyons' 1-0 defeat away to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final last night – he probably should have done better in dealing with Arjen Robben’s deflected strike - and the prospect of signing a left-footed French goalkeeper may evoke memories of Fabien Barthez for United supporters.

But Lloris, 23, is highly regarded and is thought to be Ferguson’s first choice. United, however, have had little success trying to prise players away from Lyons in the past. Michael Essien, Mahamadou Diarra and Karim Benzema have all fallen through their grasp in recent years and Ferguson must decide if he is prepared to run the risk of a fourth humiliation.

Neuer, 24, would be a cheaper alternative and, at 6ft 4½ inches, certainly cuts an imposing figure. He is expected to go to the World Cup with Germany. Afinkeev, 24, impressed against United in the Champions League this season but there are reputedly concerns about the Russia goalkeeper’s handling from crosses out wide.

Possible ins: Lyon’s Hugo Lloris, who would cost around £15 million, possibly more, or Manuel Neuer, of Schalke, who would fetch around £10-£12 million.

Possible outs: Ben Foster

DEFENCE

United appear to be increasingly hopeful that Nemanja Vidic will stay, even though it had seemed near certain the Serbia defender would leave in the summer. Vidic is contracted to the club until June 2012 and United are likely to insist he signs a new deal, rather than let his present one run down. Real Madrid, AC Milan and Barcelona are all interested in the player.

The importance of keeping Vidic is heightened by the continuing fitness problems of Rio Ferdinand, who has already suffered three minor injuries since returning in January from a four-month lay-off with a chronic back problem that the defender conceded left him walking “like a hunchback”.

Gary Neville has yet to been given a new one-year deal, but given his solid form and consistent inclusion in recent weeks that cannot be discounted by any means. If he stays, and with Wes Brown, John O’Shea and Rafael Da Silva to call upon, Ferguson is unlikely to be in the market for a right back. Fabio Da Silva is expected to be given more opportunities at left back next season, although Patrice Evra is probably the best guaranteed starter after Rooney.

United have been persistently linked with Simon Kjaer, the 21-year-old Palermo and Denmark centre-half, and are expected to move at some point for Jack Rodwell, the young Everton player who is comfortable in midfield or defence. United would probably prefer to wait another year, but with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City also circling, their hands could be forced this summer.

Possible ins: Jack Rodwell, of Everton, although he would cost at least £20 million. Simon Kjaer at Palermo would be a cheaper alternative at around £15 million.

Possible outs: Nemanja Vidic, Gary Neville

MIDFIELD

Anderson may well have found himself surplus to requirements this summer but for a ruptured cruciate knee ligament that could rule out the possibility of selling the Brazilian. Unless his form and attitude improves markedly next season, though, he may be on borrowed time anyway.

Owen Hargreaves has not played for the first team for 19 months and it is anyone’s guess as to whether he will ever make a successful return. The England midfield player is about to enter the final year of his contract having made just 25 starts since joining United in a £20.2 million deal from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2007, and with little resale value now given his plethora of injury problems, Ferguson must hope he can regain at least part of his fitness and play a role of sorts next term.

Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs have each been given another season, but the future of Michael Carrick remains uncertain. The England midfield player’s form in the big games especially has been poor, notably the Champions League final against Barcelona last May, the first leg of this season’s Round of 16 tie against AC Milan in the San Siro and both legs of the quarter-final defeat by Bayern Munich.

He did not feature against Chelsea and has not played since the second leg against Bayern, having been omitted from the 18-man squad against Blackburn Rovers and an unused substitute against Manchester City. Should a suitable offer come in, it is not unfeasible that Ferguson may sell. Zoran Tosic, the Serbia winger who has been on loan at Cologne since January, may also leave, having failed to convinced since his £6.3 million move from Partizan Belgrade.

United have been monitoring Jamer Milner, the £20 million rated Aston Villa and England midfield player, and have been linked with a move for Joe Cole, the Chelsea winger, who is out of contract at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season. Marek Hamsik, 22, the highly-rated Napoli and Slovakia attacking midfield player, has been on United’s radar for some time. Ferguson has also been a long-term admirer of David Silva, the Valencia winger.

Possible ins: James Milner from Aston Villa or Marek Hamsik from Napoli, both of whom would cost in the region of £20 million; Joe Cole is available on a free transfer from Chelsea at the end of the season.

Possible outs: Michael Carrick, Anderson, Zoran Tosic

ATTACK

United’s dependence on Wayne Rooney, who has scored 34 goals this season, has been obvious for all to see. The recruit of a world-class striker to ease the burden on Rooney has to be high on Ferguson’s agenda.

Mame Biram Diouf, Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck all remain raw and not all can be guaranteed to make the grade, while it remains to be seen how Michael Owen recovers from his hamstring operation.

The main question surrounds the future of Dimitar Berbatov, who has been routinely overlooked for the biggest games and has yet to get close to justifying his club record £30.75 million fee.

AC Milan and Bayern Munich have been linked with moves for the Bulgaria forward in recent weeks, but United would do well to recoup even half of what they paid for him and it is unclear if Ferguson is prepared to take a big financial hit on the player, especially as his departure would leave him needing to sign two new strikers, not just one.

Talk is rife of Ferguson going back in for Karim Benzema, the France striker who rejected the chance to move to Old Trafford in favour of joining Real Madrid last summer. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the AC Milan striker, Edin Dzeko, the Wolfsburg forward, and Luis Suarez of Ajax have also been linked with the club. Dzeko’s lack of pace is thought to be a concern, however.

Oscar Cardozo, the Benfica striker, is another name in the frame, although David Villa’s age – he turns 29 in December – is likely to be thwart the prospect of a move for the Valencia and Spain striker, unless Ferguson breaks with his policy of not signing players over the age of 26, or with little resale value, as he did with next to no success with Berbatov.

Possible ins: Karim Benzema from Real Madrid, Edin Dzeko at Wolfsburg, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

Possible outs: Dimitar Berbatov, Danny Welbeck

Milan - Klaas-Jan Huntelaar dikabarkan sedang menuju Manchester United. Sedangkan Dimitar Berbatov kemungkinan akan menjadi bagian dari kesepakatan striker internasional Belanda ini.

Huntelaar memang dikabarkan telah menjadi incaran MU di musim panas ini. Spekulasi itu semakin menguat setelah wakil presiden AC Milan Adriano Galliani tidak menutup kemungkinan pemainnya tersebut pindah ke Inggris.

"Saat Klass berada di Real Madrid, dia memiliki peluang untuk pergi ke Inggris, Jerman atau Italia, dan kemudian dia memilih Milan. Namun Inggris bisa menjadi solusi masa depannya," kata Galliani seperti dilansir Espn.

Rossoneri tampaknya bersedia melepas Huntelaar karena penyerang berusia tidak terlalu bersinar di San Siro. The Hunter masih kalah gemilang dari pemain depan Milan lainnya, Pato dan juga Marco Borriello.

Sementara dari Inggris, MU dikabarkan telah siap melepas Berbatov ke Milan. Namun striker Bulgaria ini juga kemungkinan bisa menjadi bagian dari rencana MU untuk memboyong Hunterlaar ke Old Trafford.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has told Dimitar Berbatov he would be "crazy to leave" Manchester United, following what has been a disappointing second season for the Bulgarian at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy, who spent five years at United before leaving in 2006, said: "I don't think he should leave yet – this is his second year so I think that he should give it another year at least – I wouldn't leave United that easy. I know what it's like when you've left – it's gone it doesn't come back anymore.

"I was lucky. I was lucky to play with Real Madrid [after United]. Where can you go after United? Probably that's Madrid. But any other thing isn't the same. Now I know what it is – playing for those kind of clubs that's a one-off for a player."

Van Nistelrooy added he could empathise with Berbatov. "Of course I can. For £30m there were big expectations, they aren't complete so far and he isn't regularly playing – OK he plays but not always. Of course that's a disappointment because expectations are sky high but I think that when he has the support of the manager and the lads that he should just carry on and turn it around."

The 25-year-old DR Congo-born shot-stopper has been mentioned as a possible long-term successor to stalwart Edwin van der Sar.

Pemain berumur 25 tahun itu memang menjadi salah satu target MU. Dia dikabarkan akan ditawari kontrak panjang di MU. Tim asuhan Sir Alex Ferguson itu memang membutuhkan kiper paten baru, setelah Van der Sar semakin menua. Mandanda dianggap cocok sebagai andalan baru "Setan Merah".

Kenapa ya rasanya aku selalu underestimate sama kiper2 yang badannya nggak terlalu tinggi seperti akinfeev, casillas, dulu barthez dan termasuk mandanda (185 cm). Yoi Om... betul banget. he... emang aku-nya yang selalu underestimate dulu. klo ada yang bilang kiper pendek pasti mikirnya ke barthez dulu. rasanya seperti trauma. apalagi ngelihat performa kiper jangkung yang sekarang rasanya jadi rada anti kiper pendek.

@red_devilz : menurutku carrick bukanlah gelandang bertipe "pengangkut air", malah rasanya jauh banget dari tipe gelandang itu. geladang pengangkut air deskripsi utamanya menurutku adalah ngotot dengan stamina kuat, tapi carrick khusus untuk ngotot sangat-sangat nggak cocok malah kesannya carrick takut duel fisik. mungkin carrick lebih ke tipe deep playing playmaker gitu yang sering distribusikan bola dari bek ke depan. oh ya, jangan lupakan anderson... justru dia lebih bertipe "pengangkut air" dibanding carrick. IMO :peace:

According to reports in South America, the 24-year-old is attracting signficant interest from England with several scouts keeping close tabs on the Argentinean international.

Despite having only one cap to his name, Boselli could be heading to the World Cup this summer as a surprise choice in Diego Maradona's squad after an impressive season - having scored 24 goals in 34 games.

Several European clubs - including Italian giants Roma and AC Milan - are keen to snap up the pacey striker, although the leading bids are likely to come from the Premier League.

Earlier this week, Manchester United were heavily linked to Boselli after reports that out-of-favour Dimitar Berbatov is set to be sold off to make room for a new crop of forwards alongside star man Wayne Rooney.

United have already announced the signing of Javier Hernandez from Mexican side Chivas this month, and Boselli could be brought in at the same time to ease the transition of the two players from the Americas.

However, Old Trafford bosses are facing some serious competition from the Premier League's other big-hitters with Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini already aware of Boselli's talent.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez and Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti are also thought to have expressed an interest, which could lead to a pre-World Cup scramble for the player.

Reports of bids from multiple clubs could also increase Boselli's price-tag, which at the moment is thought to be as low as £5million.

Roma are ready to offer Brazil goalkeeper Doni to Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United in a bid to raise funds.

The cash-strapped Serie A high flyers want to sign loan star Nicolas Burdisso on a permanent deal from Inter Milan and hope to raise about £5m by off-loading Doni.

The 30-year-old has lost his place to compatriot Julio Sergio at the Olympic Stadium this season and is too valuable to sit on the bench.

Tottenham, who have also been linked with Genoa's Marco Amelia in their pursuit of a new keeper, are seen in Italy as the favourites despite being more than happy with first choice Heurelho Gomes.

Fiorentina are ready to cash in on Arsenal and Manchester United target Sebastien Frey as they look to remodel their side this summer.

The Serie A outfit could offload goalkeeper Frey, Peru left-back Juan Manuel Vargas and drug shamed former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu in a bid to raise funds.

Fiorentina want to bring in fresh faces as they limp towards a mid-table position - failing to match last season's achievement of qualifying for the Champions League.

Vargas is wanted by Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus and should command a fee in excess of £15million.

Cole will revisit his famous attacking partnership with Dwight Yorke at United's Big Red Family Day out for Sport Relief on Saturday at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson pioneered the four-strong senior strike force and it was the most successful quartet of that era. Arguably, it still is the best ever.

Now Cole believes another hitman to bolster the Reds attacking ranks is a must.

Benzema was top of Fergie's shopping list 12 months ago but the French international chose the Bernabeu and made a £30m switch from Lyon.

The 22-year-old hasn't established himself as a regular in Spain, though, and a second effort by United to land him could succeed this time. . . and delight Cole.

"I think Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen's injuries have proved that United do need another body in their strike force," Cole said.

"It wouldn't surprise me at all if the manager brings somebody in to add to the players he has. But the question is who do you buy?

"I was speaking to Sir Alex Ferguson last summer at his charity golf day and we were talking about the fact there are no No9s around these days.

"There are a lot of No10s, the playmakers who make things happen, about. But traditional goalscoring strikers are few and far between.

"Everyone has got the same dilemma. There are hardly any of them about. I look around the world, there's Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o in that No9 style, and then I'm struggling to name anyone else.

"Torres at Liverpool is a real old-fashioned English centre-forward. He's a throwback but you don't get many of them in England these days let alone from Europe. He is definitely a bit of a one-off.

Borussia Dortmund have warned Manchester United off making a move for highly-rated defender Neven Subotic.

Reports emanating from Germany claim the Red Devils have joined the long list of clubs tracking the Serbia international.

Subotic's future has been the subject of conjecture for some time, with the former Mainz man regarded as one of the best young defenders in world football.

Dortmund are keen to keep hold of the 21-year-old and club executive director Hans-Joachim Watzke insist they have no plans to sell him.

"Selling Neven Subotic is a non-issue," Joachim Watzke told Bild.

"If Manchester United is wanting to have him, they would need to sign over a property of two oil-fields to us.

"Or at least two big trucks full of packaged pound notes.

"We have no intention to sell the player, he is under contract."

Liverpool are also said to be tracking the tough-tackling France international but could be priced out of a move for the former Arsenal, Chelsea and Portsmouth player.

The 25-year-old impressed in La Liga after moving to Madrid from Pompey in a £20m deal 15 months ago, but he has grown frustrated at losing his place to Fernando Gago.

Diarra has not started for Manuel Pellegrini's team in their last five matches and Spanish newspaper Marca say a return to England is back on the cards.

But Sir Alex Ferguson could settle for the midfielder's namesake Mahamadou Diarra if Madrid are resist the deal.

The 28-year-old Mali international has started just five games all season and is also wanted by Paris Saint-Germain as a replacement for the retiring Claude Makelele.

Manchester United are building up a spy dossier on young Greek midfielder Sotiris Ninis.

The Reds are understood to have been tracking the 20-year-old Albanian-born player but have intensified their interest.

United have increased their watch on Ninis in 2010 with a scout checking out three of his matches for Panathinaikos since the New Year.

The Greek spy has been sending favourable accounts to Old Trafford. Ninis is said to be the new rising star of Greece football and has attracted interest from Real Madrid and AC Milan as well as United.

Though from Albania, Sotiris is of Greek descent and was the youngest player ever to be capped by his country and is certain to be named in the national squad for the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

He was Greek Young Footballer of the Year in 2007 and has continued to progress at a rate that has seen him become the Panathinaikos captain.

Ninis's pace, vision, technique and powerful shot would be a welcome addition to United's engine room and the youngster ticks the boxes in terms of the age group Sir Alex Ferguson is looking at to underpin his senior squad.

Panathinaikos have a get-out clause in his contract of around £10m but could be persuaded to let their star go for less.

Spanish rag Marca have us down for a move for Real Madrid’s Lassana Diarra. The midfielder would provide some presence in the middle of the park for us(although it’s a creative midfielder we need) . A fee of £17m was stated in the piece for the player who has seen his place come under threat after Real Madrid splashed the cash last summer.

Ferguson insists he has been given financial support by the owners and that it is his decision not to spend a large chunk of the £80m he received for Ronaldo on one big-name signing.

“The proof of the pudding is the eating isn’t it? They’ve given me £20m for three players already and any time we’ve asked - for Dimitar Berbatov for example - they’ve done it, they’ve supported it.”

There are a large number of high quality free transfers available this summer and United are understood to have made preliminary approaches to the representatives of Cole and Pienaar.

Ferguson has already signed Mame Diouf from Molde, Chris Smalling from Fulham and Javier Hernandez from Mexican club Chivas.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has reiterated Sir Alex Ferguson will have money to spend on new signings in the summer.

The mammoth debts built up by the Glazer family at Old Trafford have led to suggestions Ferguson is working on a reduced transfer budget, despite last year's £80million sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

Ferguson has repeatedly stated that he still has a large bulk of that cash available for new players and has already agreed deals for Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez to join United next season.

Gill has confirmed that Ferguson is also likely to have further funds at his disposal, but insists the club will not discuss their targets after being linked with the likes of Karim Benzema and Luka Modric.

"I can look you in the eye and tell you straight that we have the transfer funds available to the manager," said Gill.

"Targets have been discussed already, as you'd expect, but it's not our style to talk about names and it never will be."
Green and gold protest

Meanwhile, Gill is confident that the players have not been distracted by the green and gold protests from United supporters who want the Glazers to give up ownership of the club.

Gill concedes he would prefer not to see green and gold outnumber red and white inside Old Trafford, but he understands the need for fans to voice their opinion.

Speaking to the Manchester United Disabled Supporters Association magazine 'Rollin' Reds', he added: "I've asked the players and they say they are not distracted, but if your question is 'would I prefer all red and white instead of gold and green when you have a full stadium and you are playing host to famous opposition', of course I would.

"If the question is 'would I prefer not to look out of my office and see the scarves they are selling on the street', of course I'd prefer that. But as Alex has said, people have a right to protest.

"Nobody is going to stop that, and in the ground itself we are not going to stop that, but I do object to the obstruction of peoples' view by some banner when they have paid good money for their seats.

"It's not the owners' style to shout from the rooftops, whether United have done well or badly, and while they will continue to review their position on interviews and so forth, I don't see them ever turning into the kind of owners who use the club for their own ego.

"In this job you expect criticism, but if it's advice I ever need I've always Sir Bobby [Charlton] in the boardroom to call upon and Sir Alex is very good, very clear and we talk often."

Now the 24-year-old forward concedes that it would be tough to say 'no' to United.

Man Utd and Real Madrid are very close to coming to an agreement over striker Karim Benzema according to reports out of Spain. Sir Alex Ferguson has long been an admirer of Benzema and wanted to bring the Frenchman to Old Trafford last season but was thwarted in his attempts after Real Madrid snatched the 22 year old from under their noses.

Benzema himself only two days ago stated that he never wants to leave Real Madrid and is wanted to stay at the Bernabeau forever but that now looks like nothing more than a last desperate attempt by the player to convince the money men at Real Madrid to stick with him, that appeal however looks like it has fallen on death ears and Man Utd are closer now than they have ever been to securing their man.

Ferguson is looking for a new striker no matter what comments come out of Old Trafford, they want to get rid of flop Dimitar Berbatov and Benzema has always been their preferred target and with the Frenchman not getting much playing time at Real Madrid Ferguson is hopeful that Benzema will be a Man Utd player next season.

No fee has been mentioned and to be honest it is still not clear if this will be a loan deal or permanent move but the Spanish media are convinced that a deal is very close to being agreed.

The Argentina international has been locked in talks with Bernabeu chiefs for some time as he bids to land a deal more lucrative than his current £15,000-a-week. It certainly doesn't seem like a an unreasonable request.

The hot-shot striker has hit an impressive 29 goals in 38 appearances this term, including 12 in his last 12. Karim Benzema, in contrast, has failed to reach double figures despite joining the club for £35million last summer and earning considerably more in wages.

The former Lyon star is one of a number of players Higuain can point to as more handsomely rewarded for considerably less by way of results.

After scoring in Saturday's crushing 5-1 win - which may turn out to be his final home game for the club he joined in 2007 - Higuain said: 'I'm proud to take the applause from these people who know that in the three-and-a-half years I've been here I have given everything for this club.

'Sometimes I succeed and sometimes it goes wrong, but I'm proud of being able to wear the shirt of this team. I want to continue, but it is not closed (definite).'

A corner appeared to have been turned in March when Madrid director general Jorge Valdano said he wanted the forward to stay for the rest of his career.

Manchester United face a battle with Bayern Munich over the summer for CSKA Moscow's £15million-rated winger Milos Krasic.

Bayern and United head a list of clubs, which also includes Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan, that have sent scouts to watch the Serbian star.

The 25 year-old's agent Dejan Joksimovic said: 'It is true that Milos is wanted by a number of the biggest clubs in Europe. At the moment Bayern are the first choice with United in second place.'

The agent revealed Bayern have stepped up their enquiries into the player, but he dreams of playing at Old Trafford - turning down a move to United's local rivals Manchester City in January.

Joksimovic told Goal.com: 'The team that has expressed the strongest interest is Bayern Munich. Manchester United have also been interested throughout the season and the player dreams of a move to such a great club.

As Sir Alex Ferguson begins his rebuilding job at Old Trafford this summer, he will hope the search for a successor to Edwin van der Sar doesn't prove as treacherous as his attempts to replace Peter Schmeichel.

Despite convincing Van der Sar to extend his United contract into his 40s, Ferguson knows he cannot expect the veteran goalkeeper to continue defy the years.

That is why he's spent the past 12 months monitoring Europe's finest goalkeepers in a bid to make the transition as smooth as possible.

In truth, he expected the situation of United's next No 1 to be resolved by now with Ben Foster given every chance to establish himself as Van der Sar's successor this season.

But a series of nervous displays at the start of the campaign saw the man who Ferguson once described as the future of both club and country demoted to third choice and eventually shown the door.

With Foster set to move to Birmingham this summer, Ferguson will now have to redouble his efforts to find a new goalkeeper with Tomasz Kuszczak unlikely to be given the chance to prove he can be No 1.

Lyon keeper Hugo Lloris is at the top of his wanted list at a cost of £15m - and Ferguson is considering making a bid before the World Cup in order to avoid the Frenchman's value sky-rocketing on the back of a successful tournament.

United targets

CSKA Moscow's Igor Akinfeev is another to emerge as a leading candidates after some outstanding performances in the Champions League, including a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford last November after which Ferguson spoke of his admiration for the Russian international.

Schalke's Manuel Neuer is an option with United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele making a personal check on the German international recently.

But Ferguson will be wary of entering an auction for the highly-rated 24-year-old, who is also a target for Bayern Munich.

Fiorentina's Sebastien Frey could prove the cheapest option at around £9m and crucially, at the age of 30, is deemed an ideal age to cope with the expectations at United.

As keen as he is on Lloris, Akinfeev and Neuer, with all of them under the age 25, he may be concerned that they won't have the temperament to make it at United.

Which is where Frey holds an advantage - as well as his relatively small fee in a summer when Ferguson will be looking to stretch his transfer budget as far as it can go.

Frey, a former French international, has been in Italy's top flight since 98, playing for major clubs Inter Milan, Parma and Fiorentina in that time.

One advantage Ferguson has in finding Van der Sar's successor, as opposed to Schmeichel's, is the fact that the incumbent keeper will be around to help smooth the transition.

But with the former Ajax and Juventus keeper turning 40 before the end of the year, he will know time is running out to fill his shoes.

The Argentina international has long been on the radar of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who is believed to face competition from other Premier League sides, as well as La Liga clubs, for the 22-year-old's signature.

Jack Rodwell is Manchester United's top summer transfer target, according to a report.

The 19-year-old has won rave reviews since breaking into Everton's first-team squad in 2008 and is now one of the most sought after midfielders in the Premier League.

According to the Times, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has decided on a buy-British policy this summer, as he looks to use the money from Cristiano Ronaldo's £80 million move to Real Madrid to rebuild his squad.

He sees Rodwell as someone who could play a key role at Old Trafford for years to come and is determined to sign him before the 2010-11 season gets underway.

Premier League champions Chelsea are also known to be interested in Rodwell and the Red Devils are likely to have to meet Everton's asking price, which is believed to be more than £15 million, to land the youngster.

Seperti dilansir News of the World, Senin 17 Mei 2010, Sir Alex Ferguson mengaku tertarik untuk menjadikan Mandanda sebagai penerus Van der Sar yang akan segera pensiun.

Kontrak kiper timnas Prancis ini memang masih menyisakan waktu tiga tahun. Karena itu, manajemen Iblis Merah rela menggelontorkan dana sebesar 10 juta pounds untuk memboyong Mandanda ke Old Trafford.

Kiper berusia 25 tahun ini juga tak mampu menutupi kebahagiaannya mendengar kabar ketertarikan MU. Siapa yang tak bangga bergabung dengan salah satu klub terbaik di planet ini.

"Sebenarnya saya lebih memilih tingal di Marseille musim depan. Tapi siapa yang tahu. Saya tidak mendapat kontak dari klub manapun tapi mimpi saya bermain di Liga Inggris," ujar Mandanda.

Kiper kelahiran Kongo ini bergabung dengan Marseille pada 2007 lalu dari Le Havre. Mandanda telah tampil di 97 laga bersama Marseille. Ia juga menjadi pilar keberhasilan Marseille merengkuh gelar Ligue 1 atau Liga Prancis musim ini.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson looks set to add Ajax's Luis Suarez to his shortlist in a bid to find the perfect strike partner for Wayne Rooney.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly added France international wide-man Hatem Ben Arfa to his summer shopping list.

According to The Daily Mirror, the Marseille winger could be set for a switch to Old Trafford to boost the club's midfield options.

The 23-year old has made France's 30-man provisional World Cup 2010 squad and celebrated winning the Ligue 1 title this month. He is happy on either flank, although this versatility didn't win him a regular starting place in the Marseille team.

United could be set to go head-to-head with Everton for the player's signature after they were linked with an £8 million swoop at the weekend. Ben Arfa was quoted in The News of the World at the weekend talking about his excitement at a potential switch to the Premier League.

He said: "I have demonstrated this season what I can offer at the top level.

"To have a chance to play in England would be wonderful but the sporting project is more interesting to me than any sums of money."

Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster to undergo Birmingham medical

Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster is expected to complete a £6 million transfer to Birmingham City later today.

A fee is understood to have been agreed between the two clubs last week and Foster is expected in the midlands this morning [Tuesday] for a medical that will seal his Old Trafford exit.

Although he began last term with high hopes of ousting Edwin van der Sar from his status as Manchester United's first-choice keeper, Foster's chance disappeared with high-profile mistakes against Manchester City and Sunderland during a two-month period at the start of the campaign when the veteran Dutchman was missing through injury.

Despite these blunders, Foster was handed successive England starts, against Belarus and Brazil, leading to an expectation he would claim a place in Fabio Capello's World Cup 2010 squad.

Instead, Ferguson kept him on the sidelines for almost the entire remainder of the season, meaning the 27-year-old was not one of the men in Capello's provisional England squad when he named it last week.

After five years at United, two of which were spent on loan at Watford, Foster had accepted there was no future for him at the club, especially as Sir Alex Ferguson persuaded Van der Sar to sign another year's contract extension.

As Birmingham needed a keeper once Joe Hart returned to Manchester City following his season-long loan, Alex McLeish wasted no time in stepping in to make Foster his first signing of the summer.

Foster wore the England number one shirt as recently as November, against Brazil, but was dropped from the squad for the friendly against Egypt in March.

And last week he was omitted from coach Fabio Capello's provisional 30-man World Cup squad.

Recently, Foster hinted that he was ready to move from Old Trafford to secure first-team football.

"You never want to leave Man United but I want to be playing football," he said.

"I am not interested in just hanging about. I would go if the club wanted to sell me."

Dimitar Berbatov has expressed his frustrations with the media's persistent speculation that he will leave Manchester United this summer after a disappointing campaign.

The Bulgarian striker, who recently announced his international retirement, moved from Tottenham to Manchester United in 2008 for a fee of £30 million but has since failed to live up to the expectations many pundits and fans had.

Having scored just 12 goals last season and crumbled under the pressure of filling the void left when Wayne Rooney was sidelined with injury, many have suggested that Berbatov has played in a United shirt for the last time.

Concha y Toro will share billboard space with sponsors such as Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s Budweiser brand and South Korea’s Kumho Tire Co. at United’s Old Trafford stadium. Financial terms, and the length of the contract, weren’t revealed.

Anderson could emerge as a key figure in Manchester United's attempts to pip Real Madrid for the signature of £38million-rated Benfica winger Angel di Maria.

United officials have been sounding out Benfica about Di Maria's availability but have been deterred by an insistence that he will cost every last penny of the release clause in his contract.

A compromise could be on the cards, though, following claims in Lisbon that Benfica would at least consider a swap deal that would entail United parting with Anderson plus a £10m cash adjustment.

With the 22-year old midfielder yet to fulfil the promise that landed him an £18m move to Old Trafford from Porto nearly three years ago, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson may be prepared to sanction such an offer to secure one of his main summer transfer targets.

It will require decisive action by Ferguson to win the race for Di Maria, following reports in Argentina that Real remain firm favourites to sign him.

The United manager has been monitoring Di Maria's impact all season and has seen enough of his lightning pace down the left and eye for goal to be convinced that Diego Maradona was not exaggerating in a recent analysis of the Argentina international's worth.

United chief executive David Gill has indicated funds are available to his manager to spend this summer, but Ferguson revealed he is happy with the balance of his squad, which finished a point behind Chelsea in the title race.

The United manager has already signed rising Mexican star Javier Hernandez from Guadalajara and defender Chris Smalling from Fulham, and a raft of new faces had been expected to follow.

But Ferguson will place his trust his existing squad and his latest crop of youth and reserve players if he is unable to pinpoint any new signings.

Speaking alongside Gill at a press conference in New York to promote United's four-game North American tour this summer, Ferguson said: "In the market today it's very, very difficult and the structure of our squad is good in terms of ages, the balance, the numbers and there's a lot of good young players.

"Sometimes you have to trust in all the development of the last few years and I'm going to stick with that, or most of it.

"There may be one signing and maybe we'd like to get a good player to the club, of course, but it's not easy in the present day climate and I've nothing definite to tell you because we're still assessing whoever's available and the difficulties in terms of who you'd bring in."

Gill added: "Hernandez and Smalling are signings we've already made and the other point to bear in mind is that the Premier League is bringing in squad limits next year of 25, which we clearly operate in European competitions but is now coming to the Premier League.

"There will be unlimited under-21s and other rules and we'll be taking all that into consideration."

To that end, Ferguson also revealed he would not be replacing goalkeeper Ben Foster with a new signing, instead promoting England Under-21 international Ben Amos to the first-team squad alongside Edwin Van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak.

Foster is close to completing a £6 million move to Birmingham and the United manager is confident 20-year-old Amos has a bright future at Old Trafford.

"When we decided to let Ben (Foster) go, we were in the process of letting a good young goalkeeper, Ben Amos, go out on loan," Ferguson said.

"He's in the England Under-21 team but we can only accommodate three goalkeepers. So when the situation with Ben's future at Manchester United came into it and we agreed to let him go, we stopped Ben Amos from going on loan.

"He will now be our third goalkeeper, he's very talented and has a good future ahead of him."

All three keepers are likely to travel across the Atlantic with the United squad this summer.

The club will have a training camp in Chicago followed by friendlies against Celtic in Toronto on July 16, the Philadelphia Union in Philadelphia on July 21, the Kansas City Wizards in Kansas four days later, and the MLS All-Stars in Houston on July 28.

Ferguson will give his World Cup players leave of absence from the tour, which will move on to Mexico and a game against Guadalajara, which was agreed as part of the deal to sign 21-year-old forward Hernandez.

Depending on Mexico's progress in South Africa, Hernandez is pencilled in to feature in the game.

Ferguson added: "It depends when his last game is for Mexico. Normally we give the players 28 days' rest but in the case of Hernandez we'll bring him to Philadelphia as soon as his games with Mexico are finished.

"The simple reason is he's young and I think he can handle coming in for training but, more importantly, it's for him to integrate into the squad because he doesn't know any of the players."

Menurut sang pelatih, dia sangat puas dengan tim yang telah dia miliki untuk sekarang ini. Selain itu, menurut Fergie, akan sangat susah untuk mendatangkan pemain baru yang berkualitas pada bursa transfer Juni nanti karena persaingannya akan sangat ketat. Ditambah lagi, Fergie sepertinya tahu betul bagaimana kondisi keuangan klub yang telah dilatihnya selama 24 itu untuk saat ini, sehingga akan sangat susah untuk bersaing dengan klub-klub kaya, seperti Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea dan klub lainnya, untuk mendapatkan pemain yang berkualitas.

Fergie explains Foster exit

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United have accepted a bid from Birmingham City for Ben Foster to allow the goalkeeper 'to better himself'.

Foster has been undergoing a medical at Birmingham ahead of a £6million move to St Andrews after struggling for first-team opportunities at United.

Though he started the season as first choice due to an injury to Edwin van der Sar, he has made just one appearance in 2010 and his lack of action cost him a place in England's World Cup squad.

Ferguson has now decided to let Foster move on in order to play regularly, but the United boss insists the 27-year-old is still the best keeper that England have.

Concerned

"We accepted the bid from Birmingham City simply because we knew how concerned Ben was about his future and I can understand that," said Ferguson.

"I think most of that comes from his disappointment of not having played enough games to get in the England squad this summer.

"I still feel very strongly about this, that Ben's the best England goalkeeper and I can't work out why he wasn't even considered simply because he didn't have enough football.

"Sometimes your conscience does come into it and you have to understand a player's feelings about it. Ben's been a terrific servant for us, he's been very unlucky with a couple of injuries he's had with us last season and I think he deserves the opportunity to do better for himself."

Amos promotion

Ferguson will not sign a replacement for Foster after confirming he will promote Ben Amos to provide the cover for Van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak.

AMSTERDAM – Manchester United harus membayar kepada Ajax Amsterdam sebesar 35 juta poundsterling, bila coba untuk memboyong striker Luis Suarez di bursa transfer musim ini, demikian dilansir The Daily Mirror, Kamis (19/5/2010).

Akhir pekan lalu, United dikabarkan akan memboyong bintang asal Uruguay tersebut. Prestasi Suarez yang mencetak 35 gol di Eradivisie musim lalu cukup membuat Sir Alex Ferguson terpukau.

Namun, manajer umum Ajax Rik van den Boog, sangat berharap akan mendapatkan harga yang lebih jika mereka menjual Suarez ke Red Devils. Pasalnya, dana dari penjualan Suarez akan mereka gunakan lagi untuk mencari bomber anyar.

Agen pemain 23 tahun itu juga mengklaim bahwa sampai saat ini belum ada tawaran formal dari Setan Merah, untuk memboyong Suarez. Hanya, indikasi awal Ferguson akan bertahan di angka 20 juta poundsterling untuk mendapatkan tanda tangan Suarez.

United are set to step up their pursuit of Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery after this weekend's Champions League final.

The Germans lock horns with Inter Milan in Madrid on Saturday but are expecting interest in the 27-year-old French international to increase - once the Euro showpiece is out of the way.

Bayern want Ribery to stay but the player has suggested his chances of signing a new deal at the Allianz Arena are only 50-50.

He is contracted to the Germans until 2011 but if Ribery doesn't want to extend his deal then they'll cash in this summer - to avoid losing out on a fee of around £35m.

Ribery will miss Saturday's final after Bayern's bid to have his semi-final red card ban reduced form three matches to one failed.

Bayern believed UEFA's decision to rank the sending-off as violent conduct was wrong and took their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Had it been reduced to a single match suspension then Ribery would have been clear to play against Jose Mourinho's side. But the appeal was dismissed and Ribery will now watch the match in the Bernabeu before joining the French World Cup squad.

Ribery was a target for Real Madrid last summer who wanted him permanently at the Bernabeu but the Spaniards are now understood to have ditched their interest.

United, though, still have Ribery as a potential summer target believing the winger can provide the Reds with some extra midfield goal punch. He impressed against United at Old Trafford in the Champions League quarter-final.

A French double could still be on the cards with Karim Benzema remaining a likely attacking option for boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, United are set to lose out in the chase for Valencia's prolific hitman David Villa.

The Spanish international sidekick of Liverpool's Fernando Torres is due to tie up a move to Barcelona. Barca president Joan Laporta confirmed the club is negotiating with Valencia over the transfer of Villa.

Laporta said: "Negotiations have begun with Valencia to make Villa a Barcelona player."

The 28-year-old had long been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, United keeper Ben Foster is poised to leave Old Trafford for Birmingham.

A £6m fee has been agreed but Foster is yet to complete a medical at St Andrew's.

Manchester - Performa pas-pasan Dimitar Berbatov musim lalu ternyata masih dipandang positif oleh Sir Alex Ferguson. Posisinya di skuad Manchester United pun aman. Berba, seperti dinyatakan Fergie, takkan dijual.

Dengan catatan 12 gol dalam semusim, Berbatov memang tampak timpang jika dibandingkan dengan Wayne Rooney. Nama terakhir sendirian menjadi penyumbang gol utama MU dengan catatan 34 gol semusim.

Tak heran jika kemudian Rooney meminta tandem yang lebih super untuk menemaninya musim depan. Alasan Rooney masuk akal jika melihat ketergantungan 'Setan Merah' terhadapnya musim ini. Imbasnya, ketika dia absen, MU pun kehilangan greget di lini depan.

Masalahnya, jika The Red Devils jadi mendatangkan penyerang top, ada kemungkinan posisi Berbatov bakal tergusur. Pemain yang dibeli dengan harga 30 juta pounds (sekitar Rp 401 miliar) dari Tottenham Hotspur itu diisukan bakal dilego.

Namun demikian, kabar tersebut dibantah oleh Fergie. Dia menyebut, sorotan media terhadap pemain asal Bulgaria itu adalah hal yang biasa dan pihak klub sudah terbiasa menghadapinya.

"Tidak, dia tak akan dijual," tegas pelatih asal Skotlandia itu kepada The Mirror.

The 30-year-old is under contract with the Viola until June 2013 but has been targetted by Barclays Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal.

Manchester United are ready to test Ajax's resolve over striker Luis Suarez.

The Reds are in the box-seat for the 23-year-old Uruguayan who has scored 41 goals in 42 appearances for the Eredivisie side.

A source at the Dutch club said: "Suarez is a player Ajax would really want to keep. He is an excellent talent and has scored a lot of goals this season.

The creative playmaker has had trouble coming to an agreement with the Blues over a new contract, with his current deal set to run out on July 1. This has prompted the 28-year-old to be linked with moves to a clutch of clubs.

Now the Daily Mail reports that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has offered Cole a contract to ply his trade at Old Trafford next term, amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus.

Sir Alex Ferguson will not be suddenly making a hasty review of his summer transfer targets before tidying up his desk and heading off for his annual month-long June holiday.

David Gill gave the green light to spend again yesterday, but the Old Trafford chief executive already knows the names on Fergie’s shopping list.

The fact that, for the second time in May, Gill has publicly announced that United have the cash to buy– and that isn’t news, least of all to the United boss.

But there are still some doubters and Gill’s repeated statement only increases their concerns.

Gill has already formulated the way forward for the deposed champions.

Targets have been identified and now it is up to him to make it happen.

At the beginning of this month Gill told the Manchester United Disabled Supporters Association’s magazine ‘Rollin’ Reds’ that Fergie did not have his hands tied in the transfer market.

He told the mag’s interviewer that he could ‘look him in the eye’ and tell him that transfer funds were available to the United manager.

Fergie has also been on record numerous times insisting he can spend what he likes in the transfer market and controversial owners the Glazers are not limiting his funds in order to service Old Trafford’s debt.

But, once again, Gill has used the phrase again to give an honest view of the money in the bank waiting to be wired if and when Fergie’s chosen targets are nailed down.

“The money is there. People say Alex is saying that because he has to. Anyone who knows Alex Ferguson knows he wouldn’t say that if he didn’t mean what he said,” said Gill.

“The money is definitely there. We are not in a situation whereby Alex is restricted in what he wants to do with the club and his methods as a manager.

“We have never said: “You can’t do that, we have to pay interest on the debt.

“I can look you in the eye and say that. He would say exactly the same thing.

“People don’t believe it. We never said to him: ‘You can’t go for that player because he’s too much’.”

Despite the consistent noises coming out of Old Trafford maintaining the same ‘cash is available’ line many United fans refuse to accept the party line.

They remain suspicious that, since a world record fee of £80m came into the Reds’ account last summer for Cristiano Ronaldo, United’s outlays since have been modest.

The purchases since Ronaldo’s departure to Real Madrid of Antonio Valencia, Gabriel Obertan, and since the New Year, Chris Smalling (from Fulham) and Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, add up to £37m.

But not landing a marque signing and breaking transfer records is, the dissenters argue, evidence that United are not shopping at the same exclusive market as City, Chelsea or Real Madrid.

Of course, signing off a whopping cheque for £50m-plus would be proof positive that Fergie can do what he likes with United’s money and the transfer well is indeed a deep one.

It would kill off part of the anti-Glazer groups arguments at a stroke.

But Ferguson’s transfer dealings have always been a mixture of prudence and extravagance.

He has spent peanuts on players who have become Old Trafford legends and swell his bargain buy debit column like Eric Cantona, Peter Schmeichel, Denis Irwin, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and even Cristiano Ronaldo at £12.5m comes into that category.

At the expensive end of the market he has also had his fingers burnt at times.

Off-setting record-buy successes like Gary Pallister, Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney have been Juan Veron and Dimitar Berbatov.

There was no knee-jerk response to Chelsea’s initially money-no-object revolution in 2004. United won back the title with a carefully devised plan of action that was a mix of purchases and the Reds’ own products and young acquisitions who’d grow with the club.

It was the same calm approach when City and Real Madrid sent the transfer market spirally crazily upwards last summer. Once again Fergie has insisted it will be the same response to losing the title to Chelsea again and the fightback will not mean a mass exodus or a colossal number of new imports.

While the guessing games continue and names like Franck Ribery, Luka Modric, Luis Suarez, Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael Van der Vaart continue to be linked, Fergie will already know if his wishlist is successful – how much will have to be stumped up.
